Florence Griffith Joyner - USA - Athletics - 100m & 200m - Seoul 1988 Olympic Games
Florence Griffith Joyner's career was as brief as it was colourful. The Californian sprinter was known more for her outrageous outfits and long, painted fingernails as much as she was recognised for her sprinting achievements.
But all that stopped in 1988, when the Flo-Jo phenomenon took root amid a string of incredible performances culminating in double sprint gold at the Olympic Games in Seoul.
She was undoubtedly a sprinter of note, claiming silver in the 200m at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and again earning the runners-up spot in the world championships in Rome three years later.
But it was in the relatively humble surrounds of the US Olympic trials in 1988 that she made her astonishing breakthrough.
In the heats of the 100m she broke the world record held by compatriot Evelyn Ashford, knocking almost three tenths off the previous mark with an unheard of time of 10.49secs.
Controversy raged over the new time as the wind reading for the race was 0.0 while the triple jump equipment registered a wind speed of 4.3 miles per second a few yards away. Yet the record stood and only Flo-Jo herself has come within touching distance of the time ever since.
Her performances in Seoul were nothing short of remarkable. She dominated a world class field in the 100m final, beating Ashford and Heike Drechsler with blistering pace.
She clocked 10.54secs in the final after establishing a two-yard lead at the halfway stage and scorching away from the field in the second half of the race.
The 200m win was even more impressive, shattering the world record in the final with a time of 21.34secs to leave Jamaica's Grace Jackson, who beat her own personal best by a large, trailing about five metres behind in silver medal position.
Griffith Joyner's records for 100m and 200m have yet to be broken. At the Games in Seoul, she ran in both relays, winning a third gold medal in the 4x100m and a silver in the 4x400m. In 1998, Griffith Joyner died in her sleep at the age of 38, the victim of a form of epileptic seizure that led her to suffocate.

The amount of time it took her foot to touch and leave the ground is the fastest in history and she had the smoothest, most relaxed running form that there has ever been. Man or Woman. ! They have compared her running style to all of the great men, including Mr. Bolt and his form looks like a rag doll incomparison to Flo Jo's ! The Girl Was Smooth ! Advancement in PED's ? The only advances have been in non-detectable roids but not in the strength of effect. Training is not that much more advanced. Often the colleges follow the (by now old) Eastern Bloc research.

Well..its a bittersweet acknowledgement..Considering the fact that 'Steroids' is what killed her. She died of an Enlarged Heart...The Heart is the Strongest Muscle in the body..it Pumps Thousands of beats a day!...Millions in a Life time. Unlike biceps and triceps..or quads and calves that fill up with blood from multiple sets and reps, The Heart cannot work to failure! It must continue to work...Supplying Oxygenated Blood to the Brain, all the internal organs and Muscles. But just like the muscles i mentioned...the Heart grows and thickens from Steroids..and when it does, it becomes 'Musclebound' and loses its ability to do the one thing its designed for...And thats to keep you Alive! Eventually the Heart cannot Pump the Blood out...Losing the ability to contract and expand..The Heart Chambers become Flooded...and the Heart Seizes...Drowning in its own Blood...Causing Death
@brandongreen4880
@brandongreen4880 10 жыл бұрын
I have heard that this is a possible consequence of steroid usage (enlarged heart). Years ago throwing coaches from the Eastern Bloc would recommend aerobic work to counter balance all the negative side effects(thickening of the heart musculature) that would occur with exclusively strength and power work.

The only way we can find out is if we let all the athletes dope to their teeth and chase her records. Because doping is not as prevalent as it used to be back in the days because of the stricter tests. I also can't see athletes like Allyson Felix doping which puts them at a disadvantage.

Flo Jo's greatness is proven by the fact that her world records still stand after more than 35 years. The men's 100- and 200-meter world records from 35 years ago have already been broken several times. If she used performance-enhancing drugs, if not, she is clearly the world's greatest sprinter. Let's add, no one has ever proven the accusations made against her. In 35 years, athletics, nutrition science, and the design of running shoes have developed a lot, but she is still the greatest. All credit goes to Flo Jo for the best running performance in the world. ❤

Kerry Pal Marion Jones failed drug screens. But what evidence do you have that supports your theory that Flo Jo cheated?
@kerrypal3387
@kerrypal3387 9 жыл бұрын
The author Parrish Gore Marion Jones never failed a drug screen. "What evidence do you have that supports your theory that Flo Jo cheated?" There is sufficient circumstantial evidence to support the claims that she was drug cheat. When her physique change drastically i.e., bulging muscles and elongated jaw line she stated she changed her diet and her new coach who was her husband stated he trained her like a man. Flo Jo and her husband discovered a nutrition and training program that transformed a average 28YO sprinter into a world beater. No details of the miraculous nutrition and training program were ever made available to the Track & Field world. This program could have made millions for Flo Jo and her husband. Al Joyner her husband should be a top sprint and conditioning coach in America. After all he coached the fastest woman ever. Flo Jo never detailed the miraculous nutrition and training program that transformed her in any book despite writing several for kids. It is a nutrition and training program that will never be duplicated as it never existed. Both Al and Flo Jo remain a disgrace to Track & Field.
@theauthorparrishgore591
@theauthorparrishgore591 9 жыл бұрын
Kerry Pal In 2006 Marion Jones tested positive for EPO (Erythropoietin). It was her "A" sample which tested positive. She withdrew from the Meet (Weltklasse Golden League in Switzerland) citing "personal reason". Officially her "B" sample would need to test positive in order for her to receive punishment for banned substances. But, apparently, her "B" sample came back negative. So, officially her test was considered negative even though her "A" sample was positive for EPO. So, she did fail a drug test, only it wasn't considered an official fail. As for Flo Jo's physical changes, every athlete who lifts weights will gain muscle and improved physical abilities. This doesn't prove anything. If you really want to point a finger at someone, try Bolt. His destruction of the 100 meter record is beyond the normal progression.
@kerrypal3387
@kerrypal3387 9 жыл бұрын
The author Parrish Gore You are correct. However, if the B sample is of any significance, then she was cleared and consequently there are no positive test on her record. Flo Jo: Lifting weights will result in the enlargement of muscles. However, it does not contribute to the changing of the voice,elongation of jaw lines and acne. At your convenience view the KZbin video containing an interview with Kellie White a Balco progeny. She details the changes in her body and voice underwent and the severe acne she developed. Bolt: I am a Jamaican and can address the Bolt suspensions. Bolt was expected to be a world class athlete over 200M based on the record times he was recording as teenager. He captured the attention of the athletics world when he defeated older athletes as 16YO in the Junior World Championship. He lost his way when he became a senior and did get serious until he secured the services of world class sprint coach Glenn Mills. He was a 200M specialist and that is the in which he was expected to great things. After his defeat by Tyson Gay in the 2007 WC, His coach realized he was not fast enough to be a winner at that level unless Tyson Gay suddenly drop dead. He decided to use 100M sprints to improve his sped and 400M back ground work to carry said speed. Tyson Gay was a 100M & 200M performer. During 100M training session and as a raw 100M runner with a best time of 10.03, he recorded time below 10 seconds. This was done without the application of the core techniques required for the 100M discipline. His drives was bad, When he came out of his drive phase he rocked badly because of his height. The only thing good was his speed endurance. Despite his flaws he was still running sub-ten for the distance. His coached worked with his to clean up his technique and the rest is history. Both ability,speed and stride lengths allows his to do things average athletes cannot. No athlete on PED declares they want to be a 'LEGEND' and goes out and do it. Steroid have serious side effect and just a quickly as they build the body is just as quickly as they it down. Jamaica has a rich history of producing world class athletes. The only athletes that have held the 100M & 200M WR at the same time have been Jamaicans i.e., Donald Quarrie and Usain Bolt.. The only athlete in history to have the world leading times for 100M, 200M & 400M in a single year has been a Jamaican i.e., Herby McKinley. Bolt is not drug induced athlete. If he uses PED he would be a national disgrace and could not call Jamaica his home anymore. He exhibited greatness as a child and is no blot from the blue.

I got this off Wiki... After her death in 1998, Prince Alexandre de Merode, the Chairman of the International Olympic Committee's medical commission, claimed that Joyner was singled out for extra, rigorous drug testing during the 1988 Olympic Games because of rumors of steroid use. De Merode told The New York Times that Manfred Donike, who was at that time considered to be the foremost expert on drugs and sports, failed to discover any banned substances during that testing.[19] De Merode later said: "We performed all possible and imaginable analyses on her. We never found anything. There should not be the slightest suspicion."[20]

That's because oral steroids clear your body in 1 to for weeks and injectable steroids clear your body in 3 to 4 months. This is by todays testing methods. So back in 1988 as long as you stopped taking them in time, you wouldn't get detected. Also is it a coincidence that Flo Jo retired when out of season testing was introduced for the first time January 1st 1989??

It probably is a coincidence, and how can you denigrate someone who you have no real knowledge as to whether she cheated or not. The Wikipedia article is the experts in the field at that time, not suspicious conjecture. I will believe them before I accept someone who is not.

I loved FLO JO back in the day, but back then, I was REAL heavy into track and field. I followed these world class sprinters CLOSELY. I remember back when she was definitely a world class sprinter, but she used to get dominated by Evelyn Ashford ... she had a slim, sexy track physique. All of a sudden, within a year she has these huge muscles in her legs and her sprint times are going through the roof! NOW she's dominating Evelyn Ashford after chasing her all those years. Plus, the records she set aren't even close to being touched by women today .... women who are stronger and more athletic than women from 25 years ago. She was never caught, and I hate to admit it, but it was obvious she was taking steroids .... a lot of people are STILL in denial about that!

+Jay Luck Although I think she did juice, I think 90% of all track and field athletes do. So it doesn't take away from her achievements in my opinion. Usain Bolt, regardless of whether they find anything in his system, Mo Farah, Jonathan Edwards, Michael Johnson - regardless if they had or hadn't - were exceptional. Because not only did they beat other cheats but also, technique and talent are unquestionable. Flo Jo's sprint technique was near flawless. And considering she had considerably less muscle mass than Dafne Schippers, Veronica Campbell Brown and other more modern sprinters, she produced unfathomed power, speed with beautifully effortless grace

I wouldn't say most sprinters, I'd say most athletes. But as for athletes today being stronger than athletes of previous years, general strength training methods haven't really changed much at all, and I've trained alongside many of the top medal performers in the UK at Loughborough Uni. Diets from years gone by have marginally changed, the use of plyos, weight training and conditioning are the same, even biomechanical improvements have been marginal. The low heel recovery Flo Jo and Ben Johnson used are what top sprinters of today also use, although I'd say today's sprinters have perfected the drive phase as most sprinters pre mid 90's seemed to have a much more brief/ non existent drive phase.

anthony clarke I was just about to post something similar. We are quick to assume that exemplary performance is a result of drug use. Quite often because we think it's not possible because we can't do it ourselves. When a savant can take one look at a city and draw it by hand to with more detail than a HD camera could, from memory, and when a human being can formulate what we call Calculus, what do we attribute those extraordinary actions to? Brain steroids from a LA Lab? See where I'm getting at. People just born with the talent/gift to do great things. Some never find out what they are great at, others do. Add the mix of goof guidance(a coach) and you can multiply those results. Look at her running compared to the others. I've always asked, why don't females run like males do so that they can go faster? Well Flo did. Still had a little dainty movements here and there, but she was close to how males run and thats why she stood out. I'm not a believer of, "steroids is the reason".. I'm a believer of, "this person realised what is the right mechanics to do and that's why they are excelling vs the others", until a positive drug test is returned.

Aventine There were a lot of 'savants' in the eighties right? It's a bit strange that a lot of female records still stand today don't you think? Every sport is evolving except women's athletic so it's not strange that people don't believe that see ran clean. I do agree with her being a great athlete because there are a lot of doped athletes who couldn't touch her time in more then 25 years...
@theren8311
@theren8311 8 жыл бұрын
1978utreg In the 80s there were tons of dopers. No one can deny that. But I'm saying, people are quick to judge a great athlete when they perform "unusual". This is no racist card. Just an example of stereotyping: There are a lot of black criminals out there, just as a lot of dopers in the sport back then. What if a black guy walks into a store and the owners say to themselves, "he's black, so he's a criminal", just as someone would say, "they perform well, they are definitely doping". Point being, unless the crime is done and charged, we can't say it must have been dope. Even if the record lasts for long. Example, Jon Edwards triple jump record. Or mike Powell's long jump record or Soto's high jump record. You don't take drugs that increase performance and look like those guys(skin and bones) unless it's blood doping(as far as I know, tho). Besides, in events like those where technique/mechanics dominates(field events), no drug on earth can make your technique better. You can only get stronger or faster or go for longer. So even if her records are lasting long, that still can't be used as proof. See what I'm saying? She was just exceptional, for all we know. I get your point as well.

Are we going to attribute his performance and raw talent from drugs?

I have watched track and field athletics since the 1960's and I have to be honest and tell you that Flo Jo's records and victories are not clean ones. The margins of her victories were simply too great. Not only that, but I saw her performances take a quantum leap in a very short period of time. If you want to know who the best U.S. sprinter was, it was Evelyn Ashford. She was always clean and she beat a lot of runners who were dirty. For this reason alone, I admire her more than anyone. Oh, and in case you don't believe me, just listen to Flo Jo's voice. It is a dead giveaway. As for the men, the only clean sprinter ( 100 or 200 ) I know of during that time was Calvin Smith. Smith may have been the fastest man who ever lived.

IMO, Flo-Jo clocking of 10.62 is the legitimate world record in the women's 100m, that she ran in the quarters-finals at Seoul. The 10.49, I believe was wind-assisted in July 1988 and the wind reading malfunction during her race. I remember when the ran other events that day including the Men's 100m at the US Trials, Carl Lewis ran 9.78 but it was well over the wind allowable at 5.0m/s+. That race was shortly after Flo-Jo's clocking for 10.49. There was no reading on the wind gauge on that race and by default it shouldn't have been allowed as the world record. If that's the case then Mark Lewis-Francis should be given the World Junior 100m World Record for clocking 9.97 at the 2001 World Championships. The wind gauge malfunction and was giving crazy reading on the wind that afternoon. I remember the wind gauge clock Maurice Greene running into a head wind of -5.2 meters/s and ran an incredible 9.88 and easing up at 80 meters.

I don't think it's possible for a Woman to run 10.49 FLAT. There was obviously wind on the day she raced, her BIB for goodness sakes was flapping. I really believe that 10.62 is the Real Record, if not, then 10.64 by Jeter.

And to think that had she pushed even harder at the last 10-15m at both events, instead of relaxing her stride as she did, Her records could have been even more unreachable. They may one day both be beaten, but she will remain, in my view, the GREATEST!

I rember seeing her run in the 200M in Rome the year before and she got dusted in a time much slower than this. Whatever she did, legally or illegally, she improved like a half a second....Unbelievable....
