John Cena became one of the WWE's most popular superstars among younger viewers. Becoming the face of the WWE during a career than spanned over 2 decades, the leader of the Cenation had a run that was filled with championship gold. With this in mind, many old-school fans of wrestling weren't as enamoured with John Cena as the new generation of fans. Whether you liked John Cena or not, his incredible work ethic should be admired by all.
John began his wrestling career in 1999, getting trained in the UPW organization before getting signed to a WWE developmental deal by Jim Ross. Working as "The Protoype", Cena would join a star-studded OVW roster that included guys like Randy Orton, Batista and Brock Lesnar. When it was time for Cena to make his WWE debut, John challenged Kurt Angle while trying to show he had enough "Ruthless Aggression" to make it in the WWE. This video covers Cena's days in UPW, OVW and his early days in the WWE.
00:00 - John Cena's work ethic
03:09 - The Protoype in UPW
06:58 - The Protoype in OVW
09:28 - Vince McMahon's "Ruthless Aggression" era
12:34 - John Cena's debut against Kurt Angle
16:53 - Cena begins falling down the cards
18:05 - John Cena begins his rap gimmick

Not really, punk is like austin in 2010 to 2013 the only guy who make the crowd pops again in that era. Just like austin his tenure in wwe is short. But that tenure he holds the world heavyweight and the wwe champion even the ecw champion when he debuted.

WWE? Hogan, Austin, Rock, Cena. Period. Before you name greats like Hart, Michael's, Taker, Savage etc realize I love them too but which of the four guys did I mention above did your guy have more mainstream success than? WWE is a sports entertainment business doing their best to break into the mainstream and no one did it better than the 4 guys I mentioned. Honorable mentions to Andre the Giant and Randy Savage. They had massive mainstream appeal but were barely edged out though I'd forgive anyone putting them on their WWE Mt rushmore.

John Cena is honestly the most polarizing character I've ever seen. There's so many wrestlers I saw as a kid and I absolutely loved at first, and continued as I got older. Stone Cold, the Rock, Mick Foley, to name a few. I remember when I first saw John Cena as a kid, I loved him. As his career went on, I started to hate him. As I've gotten to become more of a smark, honestly I love him again. The dude deserves all the accolades he's gotten over the years and I always pop any time he makes a brief appearance of WWE tv again.

Thanks for taking me down memory lane Wrestling Bios. This transition from the attitude era to ruthless aggression era is so interesting, AE was so crazy that anything that followed wouldn’t be able to hold a candle to it. In hindsight RA was pretty damn good.

I think a lot of people forget that Hulk Hogan wasn't the greatest worker ever either, but he had the look, the mic skills, and the drive. Cena was just a Hogan for a new era, whether you want to admit it or not.

I used to say that my interest in wrestling went down as Cena’s prominence went up. His last run with the US Championship changed my opinion. He acted like that title MEANT something when he’d hold it up and say “this is a symbol of excellence.” He gave a lot of newer stars a nice bit of exposure with the open challenges he did, and he was consistently in one of, if not the best matches on the card during that time.

John was gonna be a success which ever way he took. He was built like a smaller lex luger in his prototype days. I remember see him as proto in the apter magazine's back in the day, long before wwe.

Mike Bell was great. His brother, Chris, made the documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster. He passed away in 2008, sadly. I've NEVER been a Cena fan. However, I respect him and his ethics so much. His Rise Above Hate moto, and open opinion against racism and other social hatreds is so influential. Mad respect.

Man this is proof nothing ever changes, Old school wrestling fan during the 80s: "How can you cheer for the ultimate warrior he can't do anything in the ring" Old school wrestling fan in the 90s: "How can you cheer for the nWo they can't do anything in the ring" Old school wrestling fan in the 00s:"How can you cheer for Cena..." It's cool if you like 5 star classics but just know some people just want big meaty men slapping meat.

@@JoseChavez-uv3ft Right. If you’re taking em by mouth you only gotta be clean for two weeks, and if you’re shooting up a month. It’s also not hard to dilute or use other urine for piss testing. John was definitely on steroids (I haven’t kept up with him in a while so idk what he’s looking like now) you could tell he was on the juice , you don’t get a body like that without juicing. It’s why every higher up early in his career thought he was on them, they’d been around enough juicers to know one when they saw one. It’s like how you know a crackhead on the streets when you see one
