Brian Christopher and Scott Taylor were put together as a WWF tag team in 1998 just as the Attitude Era was beginning to rise in prominence. Initially known as “Too Much”, Christopher and Taylor would have a decent WWF run but there was nothing here that was truly remarkable. When both men were approached in regards to changing their gimmick, “Too Cool” was born. Too Cool would go on to become one of the most popular tag teams of the WWF’s Attitude Era, a time when the roster was absolutely stacked with big-name superstars.
Scotty 2 Hotty had worked in the WWF all the way back in 1991. Working as Scott Taylor, Scott was used as an enhancement talent for nearly 7 years. Taylor would make television appearances quite frequently and he faced guys like Steve Austin, Bam Bam Bigelow and Papa Shango on TV but he would always lose. On the flipside, Brian Christopher Lawler was having a great run in the Memphis based USWA. The son of Jerry “The King” Lawler, Christopher would become a main eventer in Memphis, capturing the USWA Heavyweight Championship in the progress. When the WWF introduced their Light Heavyweight division and a new television show, Brian Christopher was brought into the company and Scott Taylor would also get more work thanks to these new WWF additions. Eventually, the two men teamed up, but it took a little while for Taylor and Christopher to gain popularity. When Brian Christopher became “Grandmaster Sexay” and Scott became “Scotty 2 Hotty”, the tag team got a decent push. And when Rikishi joined the duo, their popularity went into orbit.
This video looks at Too Cool in the WWF. Topics covered include:
00:00 - Brian Christopher and Scott Taylor before “Too Much”
06:08 - The “Too Much” Tag Team
09:55 - Too Much becomes Too Cool
12:21 - Grandmaster Sexay and Scotty 2 Hotty’s push
17:29 - Too Cool begins to decline
20:17 - Too Cool’s final WWF matches
- Much More!

People tend to forget about Too Cool, but back in 2000 they were getting crowd reactions that were absolutely incredible. In the STACKED talent roster that was the Attitude Era, a team like Too Cool could have so easily been lost in the shuffle, but Brian and Scott went all in on the gimmick and it showed. Adding Rikishi was that last element that really made everything work, and all three guys worked hard to earn the crowd pops they were getting.

I remember this whole run. They were just too damn funny, you couldn't believe how ridiculous it was but they just kept going with it. I kept waiting for them to attack each other and break up the team and to try to be "serious" wrestlers and the fact it never happened was amazing. It's an example of how a gimmick can be kind of dumb but if you really, really sell it and stick to it it can get over.

Man, this is like a million years ago. Loved to watch WWF and WCW with my sister back then. It was a special time. We loved The Rock, Sting, Too Cool and to watch this stuff with her was always a pleasure. She died in 2018 at the age of 31. It's weird to suddenly be older than your older sister. I miss her every day till the day i die and i always think of the 90s and early 2000s and the time i had with her. Being an adult sucks. Being alone sucks even more. Being the last in my family (parents are also dead) is the toughest thing. But stuff like Wrestling Bios helps me to not lose grip of what was and what is fun in life. So thank you Wrestling Bios for all the hours of fun and entertainment!

I'll hold my hands up and say I was one who pretty much forget these pair but seeing them again really brought me back to my teenage years again They really are a great example at really trying everything possible to make it work for something you love Taylor with the anchor of jobber around him and Christopher with a shadow of a King over him really made their own paths to success which us a massive credit to their character and determination Such a sad loss through Brian Christopher though, had a lot about him and was a natural heel. Then Too Cool comes along, smiling and dancing, and just having fun.
