As an adult with new perspective, it’s not surprising Chris was kinda losing it. As a young teen seeing it unfold, I thought he was just being rude and selfish. But, with age, I can’t help but feel bad for him. Seeing him leave the warped stage with a broken ankle and just being swarmed just really hurt my heart and just made me see how overwhelming his life was

He became too big too fast and got burnt out so I don't blame him for the personality and attitude change. I hope he's doing better now and enjoying his time away from music. He needs and deserves it.

Side story: I won warped tour all access pass in 2010. I got to go backstage and watch NeverShoutNever shortly after he sprained his ankle(Camden, NJ show), my friends and I were backstage and he was sitting with the band before he preformed. He looked sad and beaten down. The persona on and off stage were 180. He didn’t want to be there anymore and I remember hearing the whispers backstage that he wanted off the tour.

It's still so weird to me that people seemed mad at this dude for growing, aging, and changing. I can remember seeing NSN multiple times through out the years and as time went on, he looked so exhausted. The last time I saw Never Shout Never my friend wanted to meet him and he had to walk away to take an important phone call from his mom. You'd think he had punched all of those fans in the throat with the reaction they had to him needing to take a call and it kind of broke my heart. Imagine being verbally ripped apart for needing to talk to your mom. They called him selfish and rude which is outrageous because those fans were being the selfish and rude ones. I feel for the guy.

It’s sad looking back. As a kid I never realized some of his songs were literally cries for help. The songs the past, sell out, and damn dog, etc. People were so mean back in the day to him and he was just a kid himself. I remember donating to the Joplin tornado fund because of him. He also was one of the first strong voices for animal rights/vegan lifestyle. Time travel is still my all time album. Until I die alone is my fave nsn song

Based on my experience, this is what I suspect happened… When you first start, there’s a freedom that you can only have while your naive and inexperienced. The more professionals you spend time with such as songwriters, producers, labels etc, the more you learn the process, the template, the recipe for creating a product that involves not only the music, but the image the marketing, and persona. It makes sense why he was always unhappy with his work a few months later. He started as a happy go lucky kid and his first instinct essentially set the world on fire. Right place, right time. A perfect storm. Then he came up so fast, he was trying to actually learn who he was as a person but also manage his career persona. I say this from my experience because I was in this scene at the time and it always felt like my lyrics were so carefree when I was 16-19. Then once I ended up working with bigger bands, writers, producers, labels whatever , and learned the business I got lost in the product. Always wanted to be young and dumb again lol. Thanks for the therapy session 😂

Hearing about Chris getting bogged down with his image is sad, which is one of the reasons I always supported him even though I prefer his old stuff. Weirdly enough a year or two ago he played at my friend's college in upstate New York (I was very jealous on behalf of my teenage self ofc). Apparently he was really chill and it was a small show so he just hung around with the audience afterwards so she got to chat with him (again, Super Jealous). So I hope he's happier now that smaller shows are possible and he probably has a lot less pressure on him

I really hope he just musters up and brings himself back. We miss him. We need him. His music was true art, and he could’ve been soooo big, but he chose the silent pill, to stay away from all that fame and live a calm, quiet, ego death, life. Which I respect. Miss you Chris. Looking back, I would have definitely been in the same position if I started a band when I was a scene kid. I liked so many different kinds of music and grew up on the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Arlo Guthrie, Joni Mitchell, and the Beatles. There’s no way I would have stuck with being a regular scene band and would have definitely incorporated psychedelic rock and folk into my music. At the same time, I also think I would have experimented with drugs earlier and more frequently just by being around it. After turning 18 I just smoked weed a couple times per year and did LSD twice, but I was so scared of getting caught that I never tried any earlier. I haven’t smoked weed in over a year because of my job, but scene kid me would have definitely been a stoner if I was in just the right environment where there were less repercussions.

those vlogs you played in the beginning gave me such a nostalgic kick in the face. I remember that masterpiece of a cereal eating video. I loved Jane Doe and Mailbox and all those snippets he gave us back then. that was such good time for me, because this music was really all I had back then. it's crazy how his music career changes and my growing up seemed to always be in line. his albums would match my mood so perfectly (until I gave up on music after harmony came out, not because of him, but I just stopped listening to music and stuff around that time, right before time travel had come out.) Going through these videos is reminding me so much of a time in my life that I constantly long to remember but also actively try to forget and it's weird how much such a simple internet/music history video can make me reflect on myself and think just so much. thank you for making these. it's like this incredibly weird kind of therapy for me right now. maybe this is all just the quarantine talking though.

Honestly I found Chris or NSN through Pandora when I got my first phone ever and I fell in love with his amazing acoustic sounds when I was only 12. About two years ago I finally got to see him in concert playing his album Black Cat which I love so much but the Yippee EP will always be top tier for me . I’m glad he has changed so much and experimented with his music. A lot of artists try and fail. To me each one of his albums just showed how talented he is and how much he can grow with each song he writes. He deserves better and to this day I think about how crazy it is how he was so young going through the rough circumstances of his parents divorce and just trying to grow up while gaining a huge amount of success in music. I have a lot of respect for him.

My parents divorced when I was 22 years old, after 25 years of marriage. I remember feeling so strange about it. Being in my ego driven era of life aka the early twenties, I didn’t even notice my parents drifting apart. I felt like I wasn’t a true child of divorce technically being raised in a two parent household during my formative years so I definitely downplayed the way it impacted me at the time. Looking back (at the big age of 31) it profoundly affected my view on love. Anyway this turned from a “I relate” comment to a “big vent” comment real quick 😅 oops

I was at warped tour 2010 and I was sooo disappointed because he didn't play our cities part of the tour after he broke his leg! This series you've got is giving me so many flashbacks!! So well done!!

these videos made me love their Time Travel album again which makes me very happy. Time Travel is one of those albums where every track was fucking amazing. would never skip a single track, i can only say that for a handful of records

I'm so mad that I didn't give time travel a real chance back in the day. I'll have to give it another listen now that I'm older

I'm a bit older and have never heard of the bands that you cover, but your videos are really well made, entertaining, and informative. Great work. Keep it up.

I just found these videos and they have been really fun to watch, mostly because half of the band members now live in my home town in Arkansas. I actually worked with Hayden for a year about 2 years ago and he’s a really nice guy though very quite. I never got into this band but it’s funny to see people I know showing up in these videos and finding out that they were pretty dang successful musicians.

Wow sir Whats hayden andtaylor doing now?

Last time I saw Hayden I was working with him at a screen printing company and Taylor and his wife are entrepreneur’s here. They seem to be doing pretty good. Taylor is super active in our town and I see him literally everywhere. I never knew he was in NSN

hi!!! i am extremely grateful for you making this!!! xoxo this feels like a time capsule to me in a way. your commentary/delivery/personal narrative feels somehow so ,, !! completely and perfectly in-line with what i felt through all of these stages of NSN. i smiled & laughed so many times during this video bc you were saying things that i would have literally said myself !! nuts.., .is this making any sense o god ?? anyway!!! loved being reminded of this part of my life. i remember following the sadboi times ,, n going hard as frick to time travel when it came out!! yeehaw!! ok thank you for this rlly nicely broken-down, honest storytelling abt Our Hero™. loved seeing all the live performances n seeing all the wack hot topic outfits everyone used to wear. gOd i love being a nostalgic emo thakn u this was the most perfect video ive ever seen in my whole life//best sEriEs !!! heck ya keep it up proud of u :~)

Honestly thank you for making this series. I grew up in Southwest Missouri, alittle younger than Chris, and this floods back so many memories of watching his journey as a person (and adversely my own, because of my slight obsession with him as a younger teen). Very well put together 🤘
