22:37 Much needed context: The altar under the white house is how the three kings of Kotaru persisted throughout the centuries (I think they're descendants of aliens or some shit). Unfortunately, they're not naturally immortal, so they make themselves immortal through a specific ritual using pure gold to renew their immortality every 100 years or so (I think?). The Dentist (Gustavo Fring) is now trying to disrupt the balance of the three kings by consolidating power onto himself. Thereby making him the one and ONLY king, basically controlling the world for the rest of eternity. There was however an ancient prophecy that a guild of robin hood-like thieves would overthrow the kings once they've gone too far, thereby keeping the balance in check. This is the Payday Gang. Also, there's some background plot about a guy who tried to use the altar, you can find his lore in Shacklethorne action and the diamond heist. He tried to use the altar aswell to reach immortality to stop the Dentist I think but used modern US Treasury gold (AKA fake/impure gold). He then got fucking Hiroshima'd under the white house as a result. You can see his burnt outline in the game and all the fake gold he tried to use. The altar only accepts 99.3% pure gold with zero adulterants or additives. Thus why the dentist wanted you to do the -Big Bank- First World Bank heist, for all the (pure) Mayan gold stored inside it's impenetrable vault. The rest of the story goes the same, Dentist got cocky and forgot he isn't immortal before he reaches the altar. You shoot him in the head, wheel Bain onto the altar, and make him reincarnate as the president of the united states. After that, he gave Garrett a medal of honor and then subsequently gave up the search for the Payday gang so they could all retire in peace with all the money they could ever want. TL:DR, weird alien bullshit+immortality altar that needs gold to work Edit: came back to fix a few errors. Man, the contrast between PD2 lore and the PD3 storyline is astounding. Here I am still baffled on how tf they even managed to make this shit work in PD2 and then somehow fumble the medic bag so hard on PD3

Each King appointed a watcher to make sure that the other Kings would not try to betray them. The Dentists was Kento, The Elephants was Bain and Vlads was Baldwin, and then August Lindenhurst, the friend of Dukes Grandfather. A king is immortal if their watcher is alive. Baldwin tried to stop the Dentist but used gold from the US treasury, which was deemed impure. The altar was then called Baldwind's Lament or The Ark of the Watcher. The gold we used in the secret ending was the gold stolen during Overdrill

The first world bank is where you get the Mayan gold (over drill) not big bank. It was fenced through hector who was caught by the police due to it. The dentist probably heard about the Mayan gold through a police contact since it’s made clear he has many contacts to use in preplanning so it’s safe to assume he has a police contact.

Okay so, funny thing, while a lot of people say the Scarface DLCs aren't canon because he dies at the end, it's theoretically possible he is alive, since in the original Scarface CANON tie-in game he actually survived the Mansion shoot-out by some GTA hospital logic. Which would mean he goes and does all the tie-in game hijinks to get revenge and THEN joins Payday.

Re: the secret ending: I like the theory that both versions of the white house heist happened - basically that Dallas Chains Wolf and Hoxton did the stealth version and went for the secret vault while another team of 4 made a bunch of noise and stole the pardons, then the gang met up for Bain's funeral and buried his old body, then met up on that island to watch his speech. The public story is that when the gang assaulted the white house, they were killed in the raid by the FBI. Those in the know know they got pardoned thanks to an obscure loophole, and only President Bain knows the whole truth.

It is the no mercy hospital from left 4 dead, but the green flu in payday isn't the same. Case in point, Bain was infected with it, and the crew was in close contact with both Bain and the original guy they get blood from, yet nobody else was infected, just those two. So no zombie outbreak happens in payday's lore. Looks like it affects people the same way, however, since the original guy was turning into a smoker, and Bain just plowed through many murkies with only his hands, making him like a charger or a tank.

Real talk, even tho some of the final elements are a little silly writing wise, I really enjoyed the final stages of the lore (so pre new dlc's/Payday 3 announcment). I joined during Goat Sim and it was sad to see such a cool game with so many issues, but with the advent of free updates and content, Overkill really did a redeption arc and made the game end on a fantastic note. Payday really ended like a true videogame, no drama, no bugs, no cancellations, just a fun final series of events. Cant wait for Payday 3 :)
