In Switzerland we still use the term "Welsch" for the French part of our Country. We for example say "Im Welschen" to refere to something that happened there or "Die Welschen" to talk about Swissfrench people.

Welsch (Kaudelwelsch) meaning a 'romance' language is also synonymous for 'Welsh' in Britain, the language of the original Romano-British natives driven west by the English when they came over from Lower Saxony, Angeln and Jutland in the 5th and 6th centuries. As we all know, to this day they are.called Welsh, speak Welsh, and reside in Wales. (From Ed Weeden, German-teacher in the United Kingdom).

Ohh that's interesting in catalan we have a word called "quincalla" that sounds really similar to "kinkerlitzchen" (Although when written doesn't seem so) and has exactly the same meaning so probably they are related, is interesting cause in spanish that word doesn't exist although we are way closer.

Das Wort Schabernack sollte jedem schonmal über den Weg gelaufen sein, der Pumuckl geschaut hat. "Am liebsten treibt er Schabernack, Leute ärgern, nicht zu knapp" Ich musste allerdings bei deiner Erklärung auch an "Schalk im Nacken haben" denken, warum weiß ich nicht mehr. Wahrscheinlich wegen der Sache mit dem Nacken.

Fun! I think Welsch was a term for any non-germanic language. Probably they didn't distinguish Latin from Celtic languages, so generally "foreign". So you have Wales, Welsh in English, although those are not the Welsh words. (I read that the Romans had a name Volcae for a Gallic tribe. So maybe some tribes of Celts called themselves like this.) And Walnüsse were not native to the northern lands...

I think, "welsch" means just "foreign" or "stange". There's a language called "Rotwelsch" which was spoken by trades, scoundles, burglars etc. The connection to roman is new to me. Definitively it has nothing (or not much) to do with the english Welsh (spoken in Wales).

Kinkerlitzchen: To a French, the little coins are "quincaillerie", it now refers to litlle objects made of metal or to tools (especially if you bring a lot of them "t'as ramené toute la quincaillerie, dis donc!"). Since "quincaillerie" is the store, it's wrong to call objects "quincaillerie" but that's what we do, nobody ever says "quincaille"... and damn we hate it when old ladies in the supermarket try to pay 8€ with only coins under 0.50€... Et merde, elle va passer toute la quincaillerie, on en a pour la journée !

Dutch uses some similar words, but with different meanings. Schabbernak means something like an unsightly jacket, mostly used in the expression taken by the schabbernak, ie. stopping some smalltime crook or jokester. It can mean jokester as well, but not the joke as in German. Koeterwaals has the same meaning. Welsch meaning mostly 'other, different', not just romance. It has given us placenames such as Wallonia, but also Wales. But anyway, it's rabble you won't understand.

Kennen tut man sie, wobei viele der Wörter nur von Menschen der alten generation verwendet werden oder jene, die Dialekte sprechen. Hoch-Deutsch gelernt und bleib dabei. Kein Platz für Schabernack und Kinkerlitz. Das ist doch alles Mumpitz :)

Trixi, Du sprichst englisch ganz gut - fast wie eine Amerikanerin. Nur muss ich mal die Aussprache von ein Paar Worte korrigieren. Wenigstens, wie diese Worte in meiner Umgebung gewoehnlich gesagt werden. Adjective - bei uns ist das "c" kaum zu hoeren. Man spricht es aus, als ob es "AD-je-tiv" buchstabiert wird. Betont allerdings am ersten "syllable". Iron - bei uns ist es sehr komisch - man sagt nicht "EI-ron" sonder "EI-urn" - so ist es nicht buchstabiert, aber so spricht man es gewoehnlich aus.

+omar 23 You don't need these words. They are a curiosity, even for us Germans they sound quite strange. They are adopted from other languages or leftovers from former times. But they make the language more colorful. When it comes to foreign languages, you should at least learn one of them, because it is fun, when you are able to communicate with other people. I learned three of them: English, French, Turkish. This enlarges your horizon a lot. It helps you to understand the related societies. It takes a lot of time and effort, but it's definitively worth it, whatever language you are willing to learn.

It actually is, it just changed its meaning to "a language that is not understandable for average people". You have the same meaning in the even more old fashioned (and today hardly known) words Rotwelsch (an old slang among criminals in the 19th century and before) and Gossenwelsch (Slang of the lowest class, i.e. the people who live on the street). Also historically "der Welsche" was a synonym for someone from another country in German.
