R.i.p. Top man,the first thing I noticed when I heard the Stranglers was his keyboards. I think I spent more time asking people is there some trick that he does to make that sound before I actually loved the band.

The Stranglers! Dave, Hugh, Jet & JJ have been a part of my life since I first heard them when I was 11 & bought the awsome Black & White album! Four musical geniuses who created music that I still discover something new no matter how many times I listen to a track! Dave Greenfield a true keyboard wizard! Thanks Dave for everything.

For me one of the greatest Post Punk bands (in their 1978 to 1981 mode). The Stranglers Echo And The Bunnymen The Cure The Monochrome Set Orange Juice Siouxsie And The Banshees Killing Joke Public Image Limited Teardrop Explodes Bauhaus The Birthday Party Talking Heads The Virgin Prunes Psychedelic Furs Joy Division Between 1978 and 1981 / 1982 these were my Post Punk soundtrack and the only bands that were cutting edge. Yes, The Clash, Jam, Buzzcocks and Damned were still around from the first wave of Punk and Stiff Little Fingers and The Ruts were doing good stuff ; likewise Elvis Costello. There was also people like Bowie, Captain Beefheart and Kate Bush doing great stuff; but they didn't come out of Punk. No, for me, only the bands I've listed at the top were those that came out of, or were informed by, Punk and were still pushing the artistic envelope. Interestingly, of all the first wave U.K Punk bands, only The Stranglers straddled both Punk Rock and Post Punk. Indeed, I think The Stranglers were even more effective in their Post Punk years than they were in 1976 and 1977. There's an argument to be had that, actually, they were the Post Punk originators. Other than "Shut Up" (which was a bit of a Punk Rock throw back) everything they did from the release of "5 Minutes" on through to, at least, the b-side of the final single from "(The Gospel According To) The MenInBlack" (inclusive of the two marvellous solo releases from Cornwell and Burnel) forged new ground. There is a massive stylistic shift between the "No More Heroes" 45 and "5 Minutes" and, to my ears, the icy, European, blast of "5 Minutes" has a good argument for being the first Post Punk record. There were actually other artists that were making records that could, in hindsight, be considered as being Post Punk prior to the release of "5 Minutes": Bowie (as mentioned), Devo, Television, Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, Cabaret Voltaire, Wire were all active prior to this Stranglers release. However, few, if any of these artists could be strictly understood as having, coalesced, unified and codified the elements of what became intelligible as the stylistic "requirements" of Post Punk in any way as successfully as The Stranglers had managed by late 1978 at the latest. They were simply marvellous. So, R.I.P Dave Greenfield. Let the critical revisionism begin!

The Stranglers were pre-punk, punk, and post-punk. They transcended every label. They were....The Stranglers. Vital, influential, and effing entertaining.

Phew, almost wore me out reading that! Seriously though, astute observations and well written. I liked your list. I have a feeling that like me you may well have spent a few evening's at the Nashville, West Kensington. Those certainly we're great and creative times. Dare I say better times? So, farewell Dave Greenfield and thanks. Don't worry everyone we've still got Little Mix.
