Much of it is where people have been putting their attention and focus. For decades people have cared and put to much emphasis and time caring about presentation or the decorative wrapping paper. Bread and circus, cheap entertainment with no redeeming value really, and false and hollow promises with no clear map and plan to get there.. People use to focus on the internal and put more emphasis there. Now it is all exterior and what good is a gift if when the shallow and skin deep or wrapping paper is torn away there is is nothing inside of that box? Our schools, institutions, churches… Where is the substance?

An example of CA BS > My neighbor had a kitchen fire (A big fire destroyed the kitchen and burnt into the attic) and had to permit to repair. To pull the permit they had to modernize to current regulations (fire suppression system, no gas appliances, green lighting, etc.) It sat burnt out for 7 months before the plans could be approved. all the while they had to rent a neighbors house for ~5k/mo., and the construction proces will likely take ~9 months. In my youth working construction we could build a house from dirt lot to handing over the keys in 3 months! CA is BROKEN!!

When a $125k house baloons to $450k over night. and under qualified borrowers are given loans, that is a recipe for disaster.. ie: 2008 housing bubble.. and then black rock steps in and buys these repossessed homes for 10% (what the home is actually worth) in foreclosure court.. they then rent the houses back to the person who went thru foreclosure for double what they were paying on the inflated loan.. In a market where a $125k home is inflated to $450k, that $25k incentive doesn't even cover the over inflated price of the home that is only worth $125k

The stupidity of these planning committees is out of this world. We wanted to put on an enclosed back patio and add a bathroom to our home. The permitting office denied it because they wanted us to add a new sidewalk and new storm drain. We checked on the cost with the contractor and the minimum was going to be $40k for the sidewalk and drain. We moved out of state instead. This is what we get after paying over $3k in property taxes which was considered cheap for northern CA.

I've been homeowner, landlord, and tenant over the years. Rented my property for less than it was worth once because taxes come occupied or not. Got out of the business after a number of years and wouldn't do it again. Too much tenant drama.

Affordable housing means a person working a median-wage job can buy a house that is 3-4 times her/his annual income, just like it was when real market forces were in play decades ago. Not "we're only going to give the poor people $ so they can spend like an average person"-meanwhile that enables rent and prices to be continually jacked up artificially. Increase supply, stop letting zoning laws and NIMBY weenies stand in the way of building, stop allowing increasingly longer term mortgages so the banks get fatter, dumber, and happier at the expense of everyone else, and get rid of the damn national association of realtors. The median-wage worker should not have to pay 8-10 times annual income to afford housing. Giving free money to artificially support high prices makes things worse-fix the real problem with the previous sentence. All this crap does is sort of fixes the poorest people-prices jack, and now you have a new higher-earning segment that is house poor or overburdened on rent. Give those folks money and next is the next higher earners, etc. Do REAL affordable housing, not a government scam.

Grew up in a working class neighborhood with a concrete plant and a salvage yard on the same street and behind us!! Also had a "men's club" across from a local high school, which was of course grandfathered in when they did finally add no SOB'S (sexually oriented businesses) within 1500 ft of a church and or school......

They have done the same here in Australia with home buyers grants that just made properties go up in price overnight. It's like the home sellers to advantage of knowing buyers had more funds to pay for homes. Another side effect was builders rising their prices as well. It's a no win for home buyers and governments world wide know this but it's a windfall in extra large taxes coming in across the "housing market" sector....
