They were playing peshkar which is one of the most difficult improvisations, that’s how the tabla solos start. They were playing in teentaal. What they did is amazing. Tabla players know what each is playing by hearing it at that moment and they building upon that theme culminating in a fast (relatively) climax at the end. This clip is missing quite a bit of build up. I personally enjoy the slower beginning part of it. Zakirji is obviously one of the greatest but all are equally talented. You guys need to watch all of their videos.

You know what's truly mind-boggling? If you closed your eyes and listened to it, without knowing there were multiple players, you'd think that it's actually a solo. The transitions are _that_ smooth and seamless.

To Answer your question that How they are keeping time ? The person sitting on extreme right is playing the Sarangi (btw recognised as the instrument closest to human voice). On the Sarangi he is playing the Nagma of Taal Teentaal (16 beat time cycle), known as the king of the taalas, it has a standard 4*4 structure which allows the artists to play within and improvise greatly. So they are keeping time because they have roughly decided that each player will get few rounds of 16 beats each then reduce to 8 beats each (half taal) then 4 beats each, within their time they can improvise anything and finally Ustad ji signals that let's go together for the concluding tihai, so in Short the Sarangi player is the time keeper.....This being said, all the tabla artists present on stage are masters of rhythm (laya) and even if by chance no sarangi player was there, they are all experts seasoned enough to count to 16/8/4 in their own heads while simultaneously allowing their hands to play and improvise on the tabla. PS- Thanks a lot OSR for reacting to such content. I have requested previously also please react to Indian Classical dance as well, especially Kathak since Kathak dancers do great Jugalbandi (on stage question answer in music language) with Tabla players, Pakhawaj players etc. You can react to a video of Ustad Zakir Hussain playing Tabla with the Legendary Kathak dancer Late Pandit Durga Lal kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6u6iHyDZZ2LhsU (from 1980s when both maestros were in their 30s)

It might sound strange and counterintuitive but the rigid and disciplined nature of classical music actually leads to stellar improvisations. The unbending diktats that have been laid down act like beacons and the tabla maestro next in line not only knows what's going on but knows when to jump in and participate.

For a regular music student of Indian classical rhythm, it takes decades of constant practice and training. As you both guys said it’s a whole different world but offers at least something to everyone. Also they are playing a type of composition called Tihai which is coming towards the end of their individual performances. All of them are playing with spontaneity and coordination. Cheers 🙌🏽

The speed comes from not how fast the fingers move but how well co ordinated all the fingers are. If you notice, the four fingers of the right and left are moving but no two fingers touch the surface of the drum at the same time. In terms of how the timing is kept, it is multiples of 8. it could be sound of the finger playing or just the gap when not playing all count towards the 8, 16, 32 etc. If you want to know how well you can co ordinate, it can be tried without the drum as well... even on a table. Want to try? Here is the method. Hold all the fingers (Except the thumb of course) on the table with just the tips of the finger touching the table or source of the sound. Starting with the pinky, tap the four fingers in sequence. Then do the same with the left hand starting with the pinky. Try to keep the gap between sounds, equal. and counting also helps. 1234 on the right and 5678 on the left. Start slow till you get good co-ordination with the fingers. Increase the speed. Beware, obviously it takes a lot of practice. Good thing is, you can even try to do it on the steering wheel when driving. To make it even Zen like, try to breath in for the first 8 and breath out for the next. Keep the breathing rhythm same but try to tap the fingers twice as fast. Deep breathing (Relax... take a deep breath. nada work ) never makes you relax, but the breathing rhythm will. Hope you excuse my rant...

@nbaballer8227
@nbaballer8227 Жыл бұрын
@@crispyabhi Speed wise all of the tabla players on that stage can match Zakirji. Playing fast is neither the point nor was that actual fast playing like a rela or drut tukra etc. As far as Zakirji’s tabla sounding better, it could be because of many factors, such as the tabla itself (the maker), mic, volume, and the mix sound engineer did for each one. Each one of those tabla players is an Ustad or Pandit so saying anyone is better or worse is not something any layman or even accomplished tabla player should do. Every single one of them bring something unique to the table.

Peshkar is incredibly difficult. The basic structure is the motif that runs throughout all their compositions, but you can hear each of them do a different spin on the rhythm and syntax of the motif each and every time the next section comes back around to them, while still maintaining continuity with the previous solo. Everything is in a 16 beat cycle, but the tihais and triplets they're playing are stunning for two reasons: the speed and clarity. Speed is easy to play, but clarity AT speed is what separates good players from great players from masters. I can't play any of what they played at the speeds they played (or with the clarity they have), but even with only the decade or so of serious training that I had, I'm able to keep track of everything going on quite easily.

Did anyone notice a resemblance between Ustaad Zakir Hussain and the maestro on the extreme right... That is Fazal Qureshi, Zakir Hussain's younger brother. I first heard him at a small concert about 40 years ago.. He used to then both play Table solo in the classical Indian tradition (Punjab Gharana tradition - of his family) and had already a Jazz fusion band... He had played at the IIT festival the previous year, with a band, probably called Infinite fusion or something like that.
