Pt. Vasantrao Deshpande, Rahul Deshpande's grandfather played the role of Antagonist in the play 'Katyar Kaljat ghusli'and the music was composed by Pt.Jitendra Abhisheki. Here is the meaning bof this timeless composition. The care-free (स्वच्छंद) honey bee (मिलिंद) extracts honey (घेई मकरंद) from the flower. It gets so engrossed (धुंद) with the pleasure that it gets from consuming the honey (मधुसेवनानंद) that it gets fond of this activity, and in this process, forgets that it needs to get out.At sunset, the lotus flower closes itself (कमलदल मिटता). However, the honey-bee is so engrossed in eating the honey/nectar from the flower, that it doesn’t realize (or it realizes but still can’t rid itself of eating the nectar despite that - परि ध्यास सोडिना) that with the sunset, it’s going to remain trapped inside (भृंग बंदी होई), with no possible escape route before the next sunrise. It keeps on doing the same thing and eventually dies. It's an everlasting masterpiece. I pray that every generation deserves an artist who can perform this.

This song is about bee sipping nector from flower. Thits why in this song there are many humming style vocalisation. This song also has a very beautiful slow soft version sung by shankar Mahadevan in the film. This style of music is called as Natya Sangeet(translates to Theatre Music), it is especially played in a play and it comes under the umbrella term of Light Indian Classical Music. It is one of the more forgiving forms of classical music where you can maneuver through different ragas. In fact it is desirable. Of course you have to keep in mind the compatibility of the ragas when you transition from one raag to another. You can wander off from one raag to another until eventually coming back to the main raag on which the main composition is based on in a seamless way.

The person in dark grey Kurta to the left of Rahul Deshpande, who compered the concert, was Subodh Bhave- the Director of the Marathi movie 'KKG' you reviewed, who played the disciple Sadashiv in the same movie. .

This song is one of my favourites from the play/movie. It has a very beautiful meaning. And only 4 or 5 lines of lyrics are there in this song. The meaning of this song is as follows: 1st line - Ghei chhand Makarand, priya ha milind 2nd line - madhusevananand, swachhand, dhund, ghei......(1st line repeated) 3rd line - mitata kamal dal, kamal dal, hoi bandi bhrunga 4th line - pari sodina dhyaas gunjanaat dang Translation - 1st line - the carpentar bee(makarand) is sucking the honey from lotus flower, as he likes the odour and the essence of it 2nd line - while drinking the honey the bee feels happy, intoxicated and free 3rd line - but when the lotus flower closes its petals(at dusk), the bee is trapped inside it 4th line - however the bee is greedy and doesnt stop drinking the honey and is unaware of the closed petals. This song depicts life as well, as to how we are trapped in these bodies and we have to liberate our souls and rise above the maya of this world. Such a beautiful composition! Thank you for reacting to this one.....

Rahul is an excellent singer but for this one he is caught between his style and the style of the character in the drama. The drama is about two personalities. The protagonist is a musician with melifluous style and the antagonist is with a very aggressive style. In the original play Rahul's grandfather sung in that aggressive style as it was his natural style of singing. Rahul however was too young before his grandfather passed away and he learned from different guru. Though his singing voice is much like his grandfather, his singing style is more melodious. This song in sung in two styles in the original drama and the version he sang is an aggressive one. You won't find his grandfather singing a long notes in the rendition as that was the point of his character. He (the antagonist said the style of the protagonist is too old and boring, which of course isn't true.) Rahul having received the training in other style, though for most part does justice to the original thought of the composition, towards the end he gets more drawn into his natural style and ends up singing a mix of both the versions. The singing is still top notch but for someone like me who has seen the original in my childhood, that version is etched on my musical mind forever and can't fully appreciate this rendition, which is unfortunate for me but that's how it is. Unless I hear a more truer version from Rahul. He is probably only one of the few who can still do it.

About the word "Ustad" Ustad is an Urdu word for expert and in some contexts, the word Pandit can be interpreted the same way from Sanskrit (both titles are only for men, since earlier only men gave public performances). So chances are, if the performing artist is Muslim by religion, then he eventually gets the title Ustad (therefore Ustad Zakir Hussain). If the artist is Hindu, then he gets the title Pandit (therefore Pandit Ravi Shankar). The word Pandit can be more controversial because of caste issues, but personally, I believe the title applies if you've mastered a craft, irrespective of what family you were born in. 😄 Thanks to feminism, I hope there are soon equivalent titles found for the wonderful female artists as well!
