Contemporary evangelicalism, I believe, has been thoroughly Pentecostalized with the expectation that if the Holy Spirit is active and working, then we will witness extraordinary effects ranging from direct revelation, special gifting, and emotional euphoria. In addition to receiving new revelation from the Holy Spirit, many professing Christians today also believe that the Holy Spirit continues to gift believers with special abilities like healing and speaking in tongues.

I attended a word of faith church for awhile and the gifts were greatly emphasized. What I noticed especially is that this seemed to put the emphasis on the "gift" rather than the giver of the gift. I wanted the gifts for myself. I thank God He had set me straight. He is more than enough !

Seems to me that this focus on “gifts” is AWAY from a focus on Christ (which should raise an immediate concern), to personal power and used as confirmation to themselves and others that their faith is real.

God does not change, but He DOES use different methods at different times to accomplish His ends. And there were periods of time spanning centuries where no notable miracles occurred. Jesus himself said that an adulterous generation seeks after signs. God blessed those who have faith without having to see miracles all the time.

The evangelicals I speak to on this want to use the miracles that God still on occasion performs (not through humans with Apostolic gifts) as a bludgeon in a conversation about the supposed evangelical gifts. They most often refuse to hear me when I say God works in His ways how He wills but not through humans as He did in the days of the Apostles. We need to pray for these brothers and for those who put their faith in anything other than Jesus as revealed through the Word of God.

Well I’m glad you started with what He uses on occasion. I could care less how you perceive it. God still does miracles to bring about salvation. It’s never been human power anyway, always God, ALWAYS GOD. So God gifts men for the proclamation of the gospel and edification of the body. God does it not humans.

I agree with you. I still have doubts at times because people like John Piper and Don Carson are continuists but Piper himself has confided in an episode of Ask Pastor John that he "made himself" speak in tongues because he wanted the gift so much, and stopped doing it when he realised it came from him, not God. My guess is he's just more honest/self aware than most charismatics. As for the "tongues of angels" Paul is using hyperbole, just as when he tells the judaisers to go and castrate themselves or even in 1 Cor 13 "if I give my body to be burnt": this is hyperbole. And how could angels have such a poor vocabulary? When I listen to people speaking "in tongues": they keep repeating only a few syllables with few variations. But I think we are afraid of committing the unpardonable sin if we voice our scepticism (I am).

I still struggle with reformed apologists giving a free pass to Sam Storms and other supposedly more conservative charismatics. While I do not deny that God can operate in whatever supernatural fashion He desires according to His own divine counsel, I cannot recall seeing any instances of valid (or even well attested) tongues, healing, or prophecy during my 23 years in the Pentecostal movement. If the entire Pentecostal paradigm is flawed, as I have come to believe that it is, then men like Sam Storms are partly at fault for perpetuating it, not to mention whitewashing some of the more egregious examples of excess within the charismatic ranks. For me, that places Storms and other 'moderate' charismatic/Pentecostal spokespeople squarely in the category of 'mark and avoid'.

I believe that the gift of tongues can be manifested in this say and age to some Christians to suit God's purposes. Tongues have a variety of functions (1 Cor 14:6, 15) and I would say that the sign to Israel component is pretty much redundant for now. (1 Cor 14: 21-22). I reject notions that all believers can or must speak with tongues or that it is THE evidence of being filled/baptized with the Holy Spirit. With a complete canon of Scripture, they are not needed in the local church or assembly to the same extent as the early church and where they do occur, there has to be an interpreter no if's or buts (1 Cor 14:28). Speaking in a Heavenly or Angelic language during the exercise of the gift is plausible (1 Cor 13:1) but it would sound like a proper language not gibberish copying what's been heard in someone else or stringing a few syllables together and improvising here and there. The vast majority of tongues claimed today are not the authentic Biblical gift and based on poor exegesis.

As a former cessationist, I found this to be a thoughtful response and I agree with some of it. That being said, however, I again find it interesting that within orthodoxy (especially on secondary and tertiary issues) eisegetic tendencies continue to make their way into the hermeneutical process. I understand that absolute objectivity is not really possible (as everyone brings some biases and presuppositions to the text) but it should still be the goal. It seems as if theologians possess a need to arrive at the same sort of dogmatism inherent in the fundamental and essential doctrines of the faith that we are to contend for. Aniol here is espousing a particular view on the spiritual gifts (tongues & healing specifically). It is not the only valid view. I appreciate his irenic approach to and mention of godly men like Carson and Storms who would provide a different view, and who would be just as gifted as Aniol in articulating their respective view(s). I agree that the occurrence of tongues in Acts 2 is a sign to the Jews indicating the expansion of the gospel to the nations. The other occurrences in Acts (Historical Narrative) do not by necessity have to be read the same way. The mention of tongues in 1 Corinthians (epistle-didactic), I would argue, should not be read the same way (cf. "Exegetical Fallacies" by D.A. Carson). 1 Corinthians 13 & 14 should be understood in light of 1 Corinthians 12. Paul's point in 1 Cor. 13 is to underscore the necessity for unity in the Body of Christ (Ch. 12) by showing the superiority of love over the gifts and as the means to properly exercise those gifts. Relating the cessation of "certain" gifts to the completion of the Canon (an argument traditionally derived from the "in part and perfect" portion of 1 Cor. 13) is contrived as it disregards the contextual (a fundamental of hermeneutics) meaning of "perfect" in Chapter 13. In fact, τέλειον does not carry the meaning of scriptural revelation anywhere in the NT or LXX (19 occurrences in NT and 15 in LXX). I recognize that there are indeed abuses within and propagated by the Charismatic movement. Many godly Pentecostal leaders would admit the same. There are also abuses within the Reformed movement, and others. We should exercise caution in our response in an attempt to prevent overcorrection. As Aniol stated, it is possible to be godly, orthodox, and hold to a different view. This is what honest theology looks like. Discussion without a leap to dogmatism and/or division.

With respect to cessation vs. continuation…without explicit teaching and direction from scripture, how can people (emphasis on people) say definitively that it’s one or the other? Especially when it comes to cessation, which sounds like I am being taught to disregard everything Paul says about these things, whether people mean this or not. I never hear anyone who makes either claim that they could be wrong, or that it’s not expressly mentioned in scripture. How is this not dangerous, risky, and arrogant (and mostly arrogant)? And this is where my problem lies…I’ve always listened to people who “teach.” But, to my detriment. I’ve been lead astray too many times by men and women who “think” they are right about what they teach….thank the Lord for his grace and mercy - He has lead me out of such teachings. I claim no denomination gang. Christ is not divided, lest we forget. And now I have no choice but to take hold of Paul’s words “that none should teach” you (lest I’m told that’s not for today, either). But now, more than ever, I see the importance of what Paul said there. We are told to handle our salvation with fear and trembling…I don’t see that in many people who speak about these things. But thanks to our Father for the REAL teacher, the Holy Spirit, who will teach us ALL things. Be humble.

Was the Holy Ghost poured out in Acts 2 on the apostles only or the 120 (including the apostles). The reason why I ask is because in Acts 2:8 the people ask are not all these that speak Galilean? As far as I understand the 12 apostles were all Galilean, but were all the 120 Galilean? Then in Acts 2:14 - it says Peter standing up with the eleven. Could it have been the Holy Spirit was poured out on the 12 disciples and not the 120? Thanks

I am a former Word of Faith Preacher.... 30 years ago I came to a place where I was tired of all the flaky stuff that was going on in my Church... and the claims of members that were totally extra-biblical and off the wall. So, I decided to start from scratch.... and build again from the only thing I knew was right.... Jesus is right. In my journey, I came to understand that were two extremes in the church.... cessationism and continuationism.... But I discovered one more view that I had not considered. If Isaiah 28:11 "For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, " is fulfilled throughout the ministry of Christ... then... All the Continuists and Cessationists are all in big trouble. I had to literally redefine the concept of tongues as the language of God that Jesus and the Apostles spoke.... It's not hidden... it is written in black and white.

The word says forsake not to speak with tongues and Corinthians teaches that the promise is unto us and to our children and to all that are afar off as many as our Lord shall call. Prophecies and tongues shall not cease until the perfect one has come-->Jesus. Tongues is for the "unbeliever" as prophecy is for the believer. Jesus also talks about it just before he assended up to heaven in Mark 16:17-18. There is tongues prayer language to God for our edification. If you say tongues and prophecies have ceased, your telling a lie, those who believe are not condemned but those who don't are condemned already.

I have to wonder, if tongues have ceased, what else of the gifts have ceased? Indeed, what of Pastors. Teachers, and Evangelists who are described as ‘gifts’ to the Church? I offer an opinion, only an opinion, and you may take it or leave it. The supernatural gifts of God such as tongues and healings are witnesses to both believers and unbelievers that God is alive and well and at work in the world. The Bible in itself is a supernatural revelation that serves to give witness to God’s being, will, and purposes. All these evidences, all these wonderful gifts, are still as necessary today as in Peter’s Acts experience. Why? Because mankind HAS NOT changed! Man is still a sinner in need of salvation. Man still needs healings and miracles even as he needs the Word. The power of witness is that these gifts point to the Lord and Savior who gives them. Man has technology and medicine, yet man still glory’s in his own virtues and deny’s he is a sinner. The gifts are a witness that urges us to turn to Jesus as who the gifts claim he is, fully God. May God bless you all.

You skipped right over 1 Corinthians 14:2 Paul says “one who speaks in a tongue speaks to God not to men.” That completely destroys the fact that it’s always actual language(hence speaking to God not to men). As a matter of a fact Paul says this kind of tongues is for edifying yourself and not for prophesy. So his comment that there’s no reason to believe that 1 Corinthians 14 is the same thing as languages then just hurrying on shows he did not want to deal with the text. He did not even read it or look at it. I love you brothers but when we witness these signs will follow those who believe. Not just apostles but those who believe. For what purpose? The proclamation of the gospel acts 1:8. If your all bible you will dry up, if your all Spirit you will blow up. Be both and you will grow up. Just go preach the full counsel of the gospel and God will bring about those who are called before the foundation of the world however He desires.

Jesus died for telling the truth: In John 19:7, the Jews answered him “We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.” Jesus himself said he is the *Son* of God, but man says that's a lie. Jesus also said the Father is the only true God. Making two or three Gods will lead you to hell. For true believers, there's only one God and one Savior (1 Corinthians 8:6), and you must know them both to reach eternal life.

"Evangelicalism has been thoroughly pentecostalized"? So...if you go out to openly preach the Gospel then youre an evangelical...and you WILL also speak in tongues...huh? All i know is that i was born of the Spirit and i did NOT cause it, which drives some people to insanity to hear that. Deep down i guess they believe they caused it...and they are actually arminians...which causes things like Alister Begg to happen as well as most of the AFA/AFR preachers...but nobody seems to notice all that. I don't speak in tongues, ever. But i do know that im saved. When i pray about things to God i cry...i mean it just comes out because i feel it. Almost 5 years doing that and to me its my very heart and spirit crying Abba,Father by the Holy Spirit. I have the feeling this man might tell me i have a demon for being "ecstatic" or something....but i would listen to the exposition of this man or certainly MacArthur than a sheister like Hinn ,(for example). Im not in crisis mode over this...but the actual feeling i get when i pray is like walking into the room and there is the person you love. Frankly, i would be concerned for someone who doesn't have that in them for the Lord. I mean..you were taken by salvation to stop worshipping things, to worshipping God. Ive never really spoken about this openly.

Same here. When you are born again you know it without any doubt. Nothing else is needed.

An intellectual effort to explain how God operates. How sad ... this is what all cessationists do.

It is not a sad thing to search God's Word. He used scripture to explain his understanding. What is sad is your uncharitable spirit towards a brother in Christ, or in your words "all" brothers that have come to a different conclusion than you.

He is literally using scripture to explain his points. I fear the charismatic view of tongues is extra-biblical and is wholly made-up opinion.

You are wrong. He just laid it all out with scripture. The veil is over your face as you cannot see the truth.

it is not Scripture. it is reading into Scripture what he wants to think. @@ronniewagner5368

so tell me this. i believe in all Spiritual Gifts are for today. here is what happened one time. so my friend and i have coffee every few weeks. so one night . he has a friend of his from where he goes. a AOG church. so this guy was talking as he drank some coffee. as he was talking and i was looking at him. right across his face in my mind,s eye so to speak. very subtle. i see the word, " pain". was there for about 2 seconds. i know i saw it. but it caught me off guard. So this guy keep talkig. he says his wife left him , took his kids. moved to another state. i was floored. i startn thinking. that he was in emotional pain. i am sure he was and is. but he keep talking. He then says he has a pain pump on his back. i thought what is a pain pump. he says he has cancer. my friend Bob and i did pray with him. see God can do anything he wants to do.the question is do you believe this or not. G3 has NO Scripture for their own viewpoint. i am telling the truth. @@Brother_Brian

No sir this is totally incorrect and sad and heretical teaching. The Holy Spirit uses signs and wonders through the believer to save the unbeliever, this is something you fail to understand. Jesus said if you do not beleive me beleive the works that I do. So you are telling me all the many people who have been truly healed, people who speak in tongues and prophesy are all making it up? Jesus said to Thomas, "You believe because you have seen, blessed are those who believe but have not seen." We are to live by faith, not by sight. The jews were due a sign and a sign was given. If you would take the time to research the history of the pentecostal denomination, you would find that they believed that tounges were a known human language. Only after they all failed to speak in foreign languages while trying to do missions did they then decide that it must be a private prayer language. Nowhere in the bible is there a mention of any such tounges. All I ever hear is people talk about all this power but they can never demonstrate it, just talk.

The folks who claim to speak in tongues are NOT Jesus. For the 15 years I was in the NAR cult I NEVER witnessed the miracles they claim happened. The services were run by hucksters engaging in chicanery.

Dispensation rightly dividing. Too many people mixing law with grace and having neither. Pentecostalism was started by a homosexual. Remember the antichrist will be performing signs and wonders. Beware of Ecumenicalism. Catholicism has been a lie from the very beginning also. Jesus never founded a state run religion.
