There's been this recent trend were some animated movies recieved a PG rating when the film itself is harmless enough to warrant a G. Finding Dory, Trolls, the Hotel Transylvania series, The Secret Life of Pets, the list goes on. Moana was rated PG for some scary images, but my 3 year cousin didn't seemed fazed by Moana's nightmare or Te Ka. I believe it was Don Bluth who said, "Kids can handle anything you throw at them as long as you give them a happy ending." This is the same man that directed a G rated film about a con artist who brings himself back from the dead to get even with his former business partner (who's a heavy smoker, btw), has a nightmare where he's sent to Hell, is shot point blank, and drowns trying to save a little orphan girl before ascending to Heaven. "A "FAMILY" Picture" 😏

Tons of Disney films did stuff like that in the early 2000's, and even today. For whatever reason, the G rating has this weird stigma attached to it, so a lot of animated films will throw in one or two vaguely crude jokes to get the rating bumped up to PG.

This one isn't for a reason, but rather for the rating itself. Over here in the UK, the infamously violent animated film Watership Down received a U rating (the British equivalent of a G). This would be weird enough on its own, but even stranger than that is the fact that over the course of 38 years, despite the BBFC receiving complaints about the rating on a yearly basis and the head of the BBFC acknowledging that the film would be rated PG if it came out today, the rating has not been changed once.

The MPAA needs a PG16 rating for young adults movies and also needs to revive the G rating that they decommissioned back in 2021 when the last G rated movie Paw Patrol The Movie 1 was released.

Godzilla vs. Biollante: Rated PG for "traditional Godzilla violence". As a Godzilla fan, I find this amusing considering this film has more than just Godzilla violence. There's a specific scene in the film that can be compared to sci-fi horror and there's some gun violence too involving the human characters. Also, the "Godzilla violence" in this film is more violent than the older Godzilla films. It's more close to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and Godzilla vs. Gigan while being slower and less cheesy.

Skateboard kid 2 possibly has the most strangest reason with a pg rating for brief mild language and an adolescent punch in the nose. Not just any punch in the nose but adolescent.

When I was in a Christian foster home, our foster mother objected to even the use of words like "darn" and "dang," so maybe that could be why they added that warning specifically to Fantastic Mr. Fox?

The way you described their view of 'teen partying' makes me think it is a completely alien concept to them. And yes, i'm pretty sure EVERYONE knows that the marionettes in Team America swear among other things...it's not like kids would want to watch it or anything. Also regarding From Dusk Till Dawn...that movie almost got the NC-17 rating because of a person with long hair getting killed (they thought the person being killed was a woman), and also they have a problem with blood being red (yet in almost every horror movie that has come out that involves blood and gore the blood is always red) so the blood in Dusk is green.

Some of these were plane old stupid like Twister and Alice in Wonderland. I got a weird one, the Adams family, the newly animated and Adams family values, with 1993 Adams family being PG13 for macabre humor then the animated one with a PG for macabre and suggestive humor and some action

the OG Jumanji got PG for Menacing Fantasy Action and Some Mild Language. Home Alone 2 got PG for Comic Action and Mild Language. Captain Underpants got PG for Mild Rude Humor Throughout. Dora and The Lost City of Gold got PG for Action and Some Impolite Humor. And Ice Age the Meltdown Got PG for Some Mild Language and Innuendo.

3 things. A. The whole idea of rating a movie PG for smoking seems dumb. Ill give them this. Watching a character especially a cartoon smoke I can see why they might think it could start them but here's the thing too. The movies arent encouraging kids to do that. B. Im having doubts of watching Mean Girls again for that reason. C. A smoking caterpillar gives it a PG yet the queen threating to behead Alice is ok? That really makes no sense

It probably has to do with anti-smoking groups insisting on children seeing fewer depictions of smoking. Those groups have overriding concerns. By the way, PG rated movies used to get away with a lot more, especially before the PG13 became necessary.

It’s funny you mentioned how the MPAA rarely cares about context when it comes to what they flag in their movies. Because just recently, the Bob Marley biopic got flagged for marijuana use even though it is used during practices of Rastafarianism and I personally think most Rastafarians might take an issue with it being flagged as the MPAA is taking a practice in their religion and reducing it to being “inappropriate for kids”.

Good video. I have two that bother me for the same reason: Eighth Grade and Ed Wood. Both use the word "fuck" quite a bit, but outside of that, their material is fairly harmless. Eighth Grade is a movie that young teenagers should probably see, yet they can't see it because it's rated R because of cursing? That doesn't seem fair. Also, I watched Ed Wood when I was either fourteen or fifteen, and outside of the cursing, there was nothing I couldn't really handle. Ed Wood didn't have any sex or violence. It had drug references, but you never see Bela Legosi doing opium. And his drug addiction was never glorified at all. Is the word "fuck" THAT offensive? Did these movies need to be rated R just for that reason?

NC-17 should become for 18+ unless the viewer is at least years of age 15 years of age, and accompanied by a guardian. And R should be lowered to 15 instead of 17.

I can tell why, because there are some R-rated films that adolescents younger than 17 need to see anyway, even if they have to do so by themselves while their parents/adult guardians are out busy with their jobs in the workforce, with Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan as a couple of notable examples.
