I don’t know what that guy was thinking tbh. He sneaked his way to the correct bedroom and basically seduced the daughter of his hosts - that isn’t nice behaviour in my opinion (in a world where women were particularly the ones who were punished if they “misbehaved”)

Cora's loss of her son, instigated by O'Brien, changed the course of the entire series. Once Patrick had died, then another male heir had to be found, because of the entail Robert's father had forced Cora to agree to when she married Robert. He wanted to make sure that the estate stayed within the Crawley family. Never mind that there would have been no estate to pass on without Cora's American money.

That O'Brien character did a really horrible thing. I just don't get how it could even cross her mind of leaving the soap there. I didn't see how her character wouldn't go insane with guilt.
@Xerxes2005
@Xerxes2005 Жыл бұрын
@@daenerysdivine1906 She did feel guilty. Afterwards, she's very loyal to Lady Cora. Until she leaves Downton in the night... She had good reasons to believe that Lady Cora wanted to replace her. It was all a misunderstanding, since Cora was just trying to find a new maid for her mother-in-law. That does not excuse her behaviour, of course. Although it was not unusual at the time for domestics to exact some revenge on their masters...

@@Xerxes2005 she felt guilty, but only about herself. She never told the truth and left in the middle of the night without thinking about what would happen to the house. I hated O'Brian!
@Xerxes2005
@Xerxes2005 Жыл бұрын
@@kerriethompson2073 Of course she never told the truth. But someone (was it Anna?) asked her why she was so devoted to Lady Cora all suddenly and she answered that she owed it to her. Which means that her guilt is not only about herself. She's a cold-hearted, manipulating woman, for sure, but I still preferred her over Thomas, at least in the first seasons. She would sometimes show sympathy for the sufferings of others, and her conniving was often at the benefit of others she wanted to protect, especially Thomas, Lang, Alfred, even William and Molesley (at the Gillies Ball). Unlike Thomas whose scheming was all about himself (in the first seasons).
