Praying hit me like a gut punch. I'm a survivor and am very very good at repressing my feelings about what happened to me. Praying shattered the bottle I was using to hide all my negative emotions and made me actually deal with it. It helped me heal and I can honestly say I am so damn grateful for it.

Sonya Rivers sis me too sorry I just came across this but I’m also a survivor and i had to say something I couldn’t agree more when she preformed it at the Grammys I was balling my eyes out it was almost healing like listening to her be so public about it and being so strong in the face of public scrutiny like it just made me feel stronger listening to it. Still makes me feel that way years later I love her for giving us that song.

As a victim of mental abuse, 2017 was the year I broke free. Praying was released the week after. God knows i've been crying, but that song helped me so much. Hearing Todd talk about it made me cry even more, I'm not sure why. But i'm sure that song has left an impact on so many people, no matter the struggle they've been through. A couple thoughts: -I kind of want Drake and Taylor Swift to start dating and see how long they last writing love/hate songs about each other -I never really liked Ke$ha while she was using her party girl image. I also thought it was who she really was. Then I heard rumors that it was written into her contract, and that she was really very smart, and then the rape allegations surfaced, and then she released "Praying" and I had to eat crow. I have so much respect for her as an artist and as a person.

"It is called 'Praying' because it is a truly deep, spiritual cleansing...in the sense that, you know, being _burned alive_ is." So..."Praying" is Ke$ha's version of "Fire" by Arthur Brown? Damn. Now I kind of want to see her prance around in a torch helmet, while a brass band blares in the background. Someone call the God of Pure Fire, because thanks to Ke$ha, his brother's job is done.

10) My summer camp group used Congratulations as their song to dance to during our camp talent show. This was my introduction to Post Malone where we listened to this a lot. From that and his other songs, I couldn’t imagine him sticking around since he didn’t seem like the guy to take seriously as an artist so I was flabbergasted when rockstar debuted at number two. While I get why you and other people would like the song and its premise, this is meh for me. The memorable lines for me are worked so hard forgot how to vacation and when Quavo ends his verse by name checking him and Post Malone. 9) You made a good point about Katy’s descent into irrelevance cause when I think back to the beginning of the decade, she always seemed like your mom trying to stay cool with the kids in that she has no idea how embarrassing she is. Now I think it’s more noticeable with the haircut and the fact that she’s in her 30s now. Overall, I thought Chained to the Rhythm was okay in the production but hypocritical with the lyrics. 8) The Double Agent said it best about Passionfruit sounding like tutorial music. 7) Didn’t notice Water Under the Bridge last year and was surprised it was a hit since I thought we were done with the 25 promotion. 6) If I told myself in middle school that Kesha would make a song like Praying, my past self would of done a double take that the girl behind Tik Tok, We R Who We R and Die Young could make a piano ballad without the party girl autotune. This song deserves all the praise it has gotten. It is a hard and intense listen but for all the right reasons.

And here are my thoughts on the songs on this list: 10. WOWZER! Post Malone, really? Well, at least it wasn't Rockstar, I thought that song would be on his Worst Of list. But yea, it's surprising how well this guy's done this year. In fact, he went from playing one of the smaller stages at Voodoo Fest here in New Orleans to being one of the most popular acts there. I may not be a fan of this song per say, but it seems to have its supporters. 9. And now the requisite Katy Perry song on his Best Of list. Yet from what it sounds like with this song, it's kinda contradictory, seeing as how it's meant to be "Purposeful" and meant to wake people up from commercialism when that's all her other songs are, including ones that followed this. But who knows. 8. Okay, I've NEVER heard of this song. Admittedly I'm kinda tired of Drake for a bit. And yet he keeps sticking around for some reason. Let's see how much longer he lasts. 7. I'll be honest, Adele is getting pretty overexposed at this point. I did like this song for a bit, but as it seems to be with Adele, whenever she releases a single, the radio overplays the heck out of it, so I was tired of hearing it constantly at my old jobs' muzak over again. But then again, it's between her and Taylor Swift for who currently holds the pop music throne. 6. Heck YEA! I do like this song quite a bit, and it's Kesha's best song in a LONG time. And it shows the legitimate talent she has with her voice. Thank goodness she managed to show who she was with this track. Best musical middle finger I've ever heard.

Todd loves music, especially pop music. Buckley hates music, especially pop music, and hates pop stars even more than their music. Yeah, they're polar opposites in attitude, even if they agree on many songs.

What's so sad about Kesha and Praying is that even though the song was so amazing and touched a lot of hearts it could not do much for her future career just because of the neglect she gets from her label. Thankfully Praying finally cleared her image and made people realize she is a human and not just a trashy cartoon character, but even with that the rest of the songs on the album and her next album High Road have barely reached the general public, most likely because of the lawsuit, which is just so sad that to gain her freedom and safety she needed so sacrifice her career in a way. There are so many good songs on Rainbow and plenty good ones on High Road (though the album itself is a little messy) that won't be heard only because she didn't want to work with her abuser, who by the way still makes profit off of anything she does to this day. 8 years after filing the lawsuit. 17 years after the first instance of abuse. I am so happy that Praying was heard by so many people, including you, and let people see the real, full Kesha, not just Ke$ha.

With Chained to the Rhythm, I think there is a place for sad songs with a killer pop beat. Look at Dancing on my Own or Heart to Break, they make you dance while looking into the abyss. I just think Katy Perry fell short of that same sort of dancing through the dread arttitude

I'm happy for Kesha. I heard all the good stuff about her years ago already and I feel like her continued success is probably due to her positive presence on social media and people seeing her for who she really is. Then she returned showing how sincerely talented and sincerely sincere she can be, and, man. That high note. I never hear that song anywhere, never heard it in its entirety, but that high note still kills me.

I remember Adele came to Australia and I went to her Sydney concert in March 2017. She's didn't have a lot of extra stuff going on like backup dancers. Only had backup vocalists and a bit of firework at the end. The stage was constructed in a way that she could go up and close to the audience. Lastly, she would casually talk to the audience like and tell small stories while she was taking a quick break between songs. It felt so strangely personal that couldn't help but have a big stupid smile on my face.

Kesha's ballad might've been more powerful if it wasn't just a three-chord song. That's what makes these types of songs so generic, they can't rise in intensity because the chord progression stale and never goes anywhere. Still though, Kesha didn't deserve to go through what she went through thanks to evil Luke
@ThomasLWoolsey5 жыл бұрын
I don’t entirely agree. I mean, if that’s how you felt listening to it then fair enough, but I guess my view is that sometimes you want the music to take a backseat to the voice, it’s a musically simple song that puts all the emphasis on Kesha’s voice, which is exactly where it needs to be
@Hoosje114 жыл бұрын

I think you misinterpreted chained to the rhythm. It isn't about how party songs are stupid, it is about how we are slaves to the propaganda that is usually in those songs. I see it as political commentary not self-loathing.
@phastinemoon4 жыл бұрын
Considering Katy Perry has very little politics in her art, I’d ask what propaganda is she talking about, if not pop music, whose primary message is mindless happiness. No, I totally believe Todd’s interpretation.

Praying is incredible in so many ways... I showed it to my gf and later a female coworker, both "former victims" - as i like to call it - themselves. They and I myself had the exact same thought without knowing any of the background, just knowing the allegations roughly: Yes, faking it and making stuff up isn't new in any way to the music industry but if you listen to that song, you don't need a jury anymore. You can pretend a lot of things with a good team and all that but this?? It's so real it's heartbreaking and still also very empowering and uplifting in a way. It's unbelievably touching and honest and VERY underrated. I wasn't sure if I should engage them in that way, out of the blue...but if you see something that might help and you have a moment...you can at least try! Obviously both cried their eyes out - so did i watching them break down - but none of them stopped speaking to me so I guess it's ok ...
