i feel like pim's family and implied childhood actually goes a long way towards explaining his personality. when you have a shitty home life where the smallest thing can set off a screaming match you tend to subconsciously assume that _you_ are the deciding factor between a pleasant evening or a fist fight, and that turns you into a people-pleaser, constantly looking for ways to improve everyone else's mood.

The thing I love about Pim is that he still genuinely tries to be positive and optimistic, even when everything is going against him and things look bleak. He does genuinely try. He's still polite, kind and helpful even when those people aren't exactly good or kind to him. I think in a sense he knows the world he's in and tries to be positive so that others can find that bit of light. He's such a sweet guy and I do hope he gets more Ws in the series

I had a Theory about Pim being one of the very first clients of the smiling friends being depressed by his family treatment of him, feeling purposeless, hard for him to find work for himself or get a stable relationship, not even having any friends until he meets Charlie who was just starting working in smiling friends. Charlie kinda was doing poorly at first trying to help Pim find friends and someone who he could get to sleep with Pim to boost his Confidence but nobody wanted to be friends with him in the depressive mood Pim was in being stand offish and semi introverted but he started enjoying Charlie trying to help him and how nobody really cared enough to try to help him. Sometime during the day Pim and Charlie Notices a Person who was just as down and Pim decided to take it upon himself to see if he could try and cheer the person up like Charlie is trying to cheer him up and it worked. Pim realizes helping people actually feels great to him and so Charlie comes up with the Idea of getting Pim a Job at Smiling friends and after a while Pim becomes the opposite of his former self making friends with The Boss Alan and Glep soon after. And the rest is history.

I do appreciate that pim isn't annoying. So often The optimist is just put against the serious or bored characters to annoy them. But that's the great thing, although superficially Charlie is Squidward and pim is SpongeBob, they really aren't because they're real actual people. After watching this video,i just realised how toxic his friends are to him. Like, even if they didn't realise or mean it. When there's something a little wrong,or something goes wrong, they'd just starts ganging up on Pim,Pim pointed it out and Allan just dismissed that they weren't,when they clearly are. One thing about Pim is that he really wants to start a family of his own one day (evident in the daydream involving Jennifer/Shrimpina and in the woods on Halloween) and I think that may stem from the fact that his home life has been so terrible. I’m pretty sure he wants to get married and have children because he wants the exact opposite of what he may had growing up. His dad is clearly an angry alcoholic who despises his wife and that is everything he doesn’t want to be.
