In Trackmania Speedrunning, nothing is more exciting than new shortcut discoveries. But the one that was recently found on A02-Race lead to a collective facepalm from the community. How could this strategy possibly have been overlooked?

I love how half of these shortcuts are just "yknow, there's a clear path that can be taken but no, let's take this completely different path that requires far more skill and near luck based skill to complete it".

I would argue you need more skill to pass through the trees at full speed than you need to perform a bug slide. Both setups are hard but after that there's more room for error in the trees shortcut

the assumption tends to be that the higher skill trick is faster. an issue comes down to resets. if your not doing the insane trick staying on the track is faster. if your practicing the insane trick your resetting if you dont get it. So this middle ground just never felt faster so everyone constantly reset if they ever got close so no one would see the time save. Even if it did save a small bit of time the shortcut people are going for the harder clearly faster trick (in their minds) if their trick is barely faster why would this other way be. This is why in every game you see theirs 1 new tricks discovered every few years or so but not like 10 at once even though all those tricks were there day 1. (literally any speedrun, racing, mario, zelda anything) everyones too busy doing the 1 trick why complicate it. But once that one trick is done they find new tricks some very obviously right there if anyone checked. But the checkers were looking at other things

Agreed. I'll bet a lot of less experienced players who screwed up and ended in the trees discovered that there was enough space there, but didn't think anything of it - meanwhile the pros didn't even consider it because they'd never been bad enough to land there in the first place.... :)

And to be fair, the “history lesson” is necessary to build up what an accomplishment the short-cut was, explaining what everyone went through to find if, and the time it took, adds to the story Just saying “yeah they took 10 years to find this after someone tried it in the past” doesn’t explain the effort it took

Dangit, at the start of the video, I guessed the original two attempted shortcut routes more or less, minus the factor of a bugslide being part of the jump. The reason I didn't consider driving between the trees being a possibility was me seeing the bugslide jump. I thought, that whoever felt it necessary to incorporate a bugslide jump just to bypass the trees had to have already figured out, that there is no drivable route through those trees. It just goes to show how important it is to double check and try to rethink known theories from a blank slate standpoint.

It makes me so nostalgic (as a 28yo) about when I was a teen playing warcraft 3 in my bedroom, building maps and having that insane community feeling once I came home from school. @leafster8244

most likely no because you dont go in a straight line, and well as wirtual said himself, more airtime lost is more time spent accelerating on the ground lost, and the extra height (after jumping on the castle) would give you more airtime, and you need to slow down

When I was playing this track casually last year, I had a theory you could probably find a way to cut the track through the trees, but I definitely didn't have the skill to make anything happen with it; even if I had managed to figure something out there, doing a wall climb with no knowledge of the physics behind doing so would just cost me time. Glad to see someone made it happen though.
