Please watch how you word your videos. The intro sounds like you are blaming his mental health issues on his dad being gay. It sounds discriminatory. My mom is gay and I’m fine. And yes, my parents divorced too, but I don’t blame my life’s troubles on my mom being gay.

@algernon5776 i dont think so. I took it as he meant the BS americanized chinese food places with things like sweet and sour chicken. Not all the amazing real regional chinese food spots thats been popping up around the country. Like malatang and maoxuewang and etc. Seeing his videos im 100% sure thats what he meant. But i do agree he couldve probably phrased it better though. Either way i dont think that means he is a racist or should be canceled. Personally i like knowing that westerners pallets are growing out of the BS chinese food we have here in america.

As a chinese person that grew up in one of these BS Chinese restaurants, the only thing Zimmerman was wrong about was that it’s not only found in the mid-west. They’re all over the country in mostly middle class suburban towns. Also i do not find that offensive, in fact i think it’s a good thing that westerners are developing a pallet for real chinese food. Because to be honest, we never ate what was on the menu, the chef always cooked up something from home for dinner at night.

Many, many immigrant groups got here and opened restaurants, and the first thing they did was "Americanize" the menu. Come on, people, stop doing that! It's not necessary. We can adapt to your real food. Don't dumb it down to our low standards! I moved to a small city in the Oregon boondocks from San Francisco. The Chinese food here is hideous. Mexican and Thai not as bad, thank goodness.

Is it "BS Chinese food" or American Chinese food? That food has its own 100+ year history. If you're saying the food at your family's restaurant was bad, then I won't fight you on that. But the cuisine itself is just as valid as American Italian food.

As a Chinese American, I loved Bizarre Foods and never knew about this "controversy". I can understand restaurant owners feeling a type of way about his comments ... but let's be honest. If you have no ties, you can understand that Chinese-American food isn't really Chinese food nor is it really high brow food. That being said, I can understand that many Chinese restaurants have to make money and appeal to their audiences - so I get why there was a backlash, despite nothing wrong with what he said. It's just an unfortunate series of events with no real winners ☹

Great comment. I also commented on this video; The Chinese restaurant comment was not wrong. I am from Hawaii and we have many REAL Chinese restaurants. No one goes to "Panda Express". I NEVER eat at Mainland American Chinese Restaurants. Same as American Italian Food. There is NOT much Authentic Italian Food in America. I am Italian American and have run restaurants as and lived in Italy for many years. There are very few Authentic Italian Restaurants in America. EVERYTHING is covered in sweet red sauce and plastic cheese. But Italian Americans are not WOKE and attack Asians or Latinos when they sell pizza or other Italian foods with Italian names on the restaurant. And most Chinese Americans seldom have a craving for "General Tso's Chicken", UHHG!!! So good for him for trying to bring REAL food to ignorant woke Americans with no palette.

The difference (I recently learned when I asked someone) is that a house (a building providing shelter and an address) and a home (a place providing familiar comfort) are not the same thing. Check this out. When there's talk about providing homes to the homeless, people bitch because they envision paying for creature comforts and luxury comparable to THEIR home. People make a different picture in their minds when talking about providing housing to the unhoused vs providing homes to the homeless. Try it with someone. Ask them to picture housing and then picture a home.

It's horsesh!t that anyone was upset about the Chinese food poser statement. He was 100% correct and the Chinese people that run these restaurants know it. They make Americanized Chinese food, it started in NYC with a chef who realized most Americans did not like actual Chinese food. He began to experiment with different ingredients and adding more sugar to sauces which pleased the Americans. There are a few "authentic" Chinese places where I live and even those have gone downhill as they need to make money and most Americans simply dont like actual Sichuan food for instance. I love it, but these good restaurants are forced to add crap like General Tso's chicken to their menus which does not have origins in China, to satisfy the Americans who expect to see the same crap on every Chinese menu...and thats why you see the same crap on nearly every Chinese menu. As a commenter below said of his family who owned one of these Americanized places...THEY dont eat that crap! You will rarely see them eating in front of the patrons but when you do; do you ever see them eating General Tso's Chicken? Not likely.
@PatienceLove
@PatienceLove 11 ай бұрын
To your point, you said the guy in New York realized Americans didn’t like authentic Chinese food. So, after trying to stay true to your culture and serve authentic food, you realize people aren’t buying and you switch things up, because if you don’t your restaurant fails. Thing is, that person did the work, went through the trial and error process, and “Americanized” Chinese food was born out of necessity to provide for their families, not necessarily to dumb their authentic cuisine. So for an American to criticize actual Asians who did the “trial and error”, and adjusted out of survival, it’s disingenuous. He hadn’t done the ground work to understand why those restaurants had become “Americanized”, so to act as if he would be the savior of Chinese cuisine in America was wrong. Maybe he finally realized why they weren’t selling authentic Chinese cuisine when he opened his restaurant, that’s why when he reopened it, it had other Asian cuisines on the menu.
@SimplyRedVirginia
@SimplyRedVirginia 10 ай бұрын
@@PatienceLove Yea, most of us get it. The point is his comment was no worse than a Texan saying all ribs except those you get in Texas are horseshit. To a Texan, their way is the correct way. It works that way all over the world. I was looking at cold beet soup recipes one time and the arguments in the comments about where it originated from and why this recipe was "not authentic" were funny. How a tiny Baltic country can be so belligerent about how another Baltic country claims their cold beet soup as theirs, is...interesting. You can bet a Lithuanian having cold beet soup in an American restaurant is going to have an opinion of how "authentic" it is...possibly calling it "horseshit". You can bet there are no Chinese people who think Americanized "Chinese food" is actually Chinese food. In fact, the only place I have ever seen what appeared to be an actual Chinese family eating in a "Chinese" restaurant is one that purports to serve "authentic" Chinese cuisine...and thats why I was there...actual Chinese cuisine. Sure they have General Tso's chicken and all the other "stuff" you see on every Chinese takeout menu for Americans, but they have have a second menu of ACTUAL Chinese food. That's the menu I order from, and so little English on it I have to have the server explain it...best she can in her limited English. Zimmern being "cancelled" for sentiments that even Chinese people would agree with is a construct of idiot Woke white Leftists who have nothing better to do than manipulate and ruin people.

@@PatienceLove The only criticizing I or Zimmern did of any Asians is the crap called Chinese food in America (and likely in the U.K./Europe) compared to actual Chinese food. To actually call most of it "Chinese food" is what is disingenuous. But to some degree, a lot of ethnic restaurants do a similar version of Americanizing their menus. To your point, that's American's fault. Many like to think they are eating ethic food, and "call it" Italian, Mexican etc. because that's what the restaurant's name themselves, but much of the menu is tweaked with the American in mind. It would be good if we could just enjoy the actual cuisine of the world the entrepreneurs came from. We bought some discount vouchers advertised for a Salvadorian restaurant. My parents love the place but I had only been there once and thought the food was just OK and the service was very slow even though they weren't busy. We needed to eat there 4 times to use up the vouchers and again, my fist impression was the food was bland and unremarkable. We started bringing our own hot sauce because they only offered habanero, and my wife always also has Tajin in her purse. Those amped the flavors up to where we prefer. Over three more meals we found the level of flavor varied but generally, most things still bland. Over that time I did a little research and found that Salvadorian food IS much more mild than Mexican food, so they seemed to be sticking to their roots and their reviews are fantastic. Apparently most people like bland, unremarkable food!

@Aevilbeast
@Aevilbeast 10 ай бұрын
"Free Speech" means that you have the ability to say what you want, it doesn't mean that you are "free" from repercussion from what you say. He expressed his right to free speech by being able to say what he said in that interview, but was then had to face the repercussions from saying what he said. Our right to say what we want is protected by the 1st amendment, but the 1st amendment does not protect us from the reactions to what we say. Do I believe he deserved to what happened to him, No, not at all. As long time fan of him and his show, and who's life story really was inspirational to me, it really sucked to hear what was happening to him. But what I do believe is, that everyone, especially those have such platform where their words reach so many people and have such big influence, should understand what they say has repercussions, both good or bad, and we always need to remember that.

Usually in the US and other Western "Democratic" countries, if someone mentions another culture in less than glowing positivty, it is usually people from other cultures that get upset and cancel. I am sure it is not Asians or Chinese people that cancelled Andrew, but the liberal, woke, less than bright people we see more often nowadays.

Tragedy ? What a triumph ! Never knew about his life and his struggles with addiction till now. I loved Bizarre Foods . Still enjoy the repeats on TV . I'm a Sri Lankan Australian , and I know where Andrew Zimmern is coming from . We can laugh at ourselves . We know about the food authenticity issues . Anyway . I'm glad and inspired that he recovered from all this stuff . I wish him well , and thank him for all the enjoyment he gave me with his food shows.

What was wrong with that statement? He was pointing out the restaurants that poorly try to imitate authentic Chinese style cooking. Smh
@PatienceLove
@PatienceLove 11 ай бұрын
No he wasn’t. He was criticizing Chinese restaurants that “Americanized” their menus out of necessity. Which he had no room to do, because most Americans would not be flocking to Chinese restaurants if they were serving authentic Chinese food. He realized that after opening his restaurant, that’s why he changed the menu.

The title doesn't follow the actual video. Many probably saw it figured that Zimmern is close to death or something tragic like that. He has been clean of addiction for years, so where is that "Sadder and Sadder" part of the story? If anything he recovered and turned his life around - it got better, and better.

I’ve always been a fan of Andrew Zimmern. I’m a Chinese American who loves authentic and good Chinese food which is rare even in california where there are a lot of options. There are, however, lots of Americanized Chinese food which does appeal to many people and which I can appreciate for what it is, understanding that the term “Chinese food” is a generalized term. I think his heart was in the right place, wanting to bring to the Midwest a more authentic understanding of Chinese food. Perhaps his inelegant generalization of Asian cuisine in the Midwest might have not been PC. I am, nonetheless, a complete fan. I wish him all the best.

It was an self serving comment that he made to make himself and his restaurant look better. The Chinese food that is commonly known in North America might not be authentic, but that doesn't mean it's not good. When Chinese immigrants first came to North America, they had to adapt their recipes based on what ingredients that were available here. They also adapted their recipes to appeal to more people. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. It is absolutely absurd that so many people are now talking down on westernized Chinese food that they have probably enjoyed in the past.
