The trouble with my Laguna 18/36 Lathe part 2

In this part I attempt to repair my VFD, I know that a capacitor is bad so I replace it, re mount the vfd and rewire, will it work? youll have to watch to find out my next steps
part 3 will be a while.
I have been woodturning since 2013, I love it as a creative outlet.
For me it has been a journey, from my great great grandfathers wooden bowl that i own to my fathers the community or woodturners is great, there is lots of help and support out there available at the touch of a button. don't be intimidated or scared to ask questions no matter how basic, most of all be safe in your workshop, follow all safety rules and guidelines.
use channels such as mine as inspiration and entertainment.
it is recommended to get proper training with power tools to prevent accidents
most of all remember to be creative and have fun

The issue with the soldering you had was because when the pcb are made they use a leafless solder, which doesn't flow with a soldering iron. Usually you should keep some. Leaded solder add it to the component, then it will flow better.

Well it certainly was not without trying my friend. Too bad Laguna could not provide other and better solutions as you have not had the lathe very long. I hope all goes well and you find a reasonably priced solution. I turn my Oneway off at the box on the lathe. I assume that is what you have been doing. We also have a surge protection mounted on the panel to break from surges on the line coming into the house from the street. Hopefully between both we should not have any issues. Take care Rob. Sounds like you have it covered better than I do, I feel like Laguna should have a kill switch incorporated into the design. Also I found out that Laguna has since replaced the VFD with a different brand and model,(ME300) which they sell at $870 US, or $1200 canadian plus shipping. makes me think that it should perhaps be a recall item, why change it? maybe lots of issues?

Thought you'd cracked it there, but quite often when a cap pops something else like a diode or power transistor will pop. If there is a place near you that does power systems they might help you out for a reasonable price. When you have trouble melting the existing solder it often helps to flow some fresh solder onto the joint, not sure why but this melts the existing solder.

Yes i was wondering too but every part is coated in resin so difficult to test individual components

absolutely gutted for you mate , really hoped that cap would fix it but guess it took something else out as well , would it be worth seeing if youve an electronics wizard who could look at it for you as might be cheaper

Maybe the camera angle but those other 3 caps look domed and so may have failed as well.

No they arent domed Maybe the camera angle besides the solder doesnt heat up or melt for whatever reason, i give up trying to fix it after this, my next step is a new VFD from Laguna unfortunately

Nice try but you need a temperature controlled soldering iron, which has a fine tip, for that sort of work. You would have been able to unsolder the board and resolder the new cap. ok.
