My Dad bought a new 05 Neon. Ten years later I bought it, and gave it to my granddaughter. It only had 36,000 miles on it. Dad never washed the underbody, while living in IL, and salt took its toll on the subframe. It makes a great car for her as a college student. So far she has doubled the mileage on the vehicle.

I bought a 2000 Neon with 115,000 miles in 2013. Been my only car ever since. Drove it this morning. At 187,000 miles now. Other than tires, tune-ups, oil changes, and batteries, I changed the valve cover gasket and spark plug tubes/seals. That's it. Can't say I'm disappointed.

I’d pay $1000 for a neon if it’s running, no smoke, ac, no major leaks and no smells. Probably even forego the ecu scan if it doesn’t have a check engine light. Make sure that light still comes on and goes off when running. Sometimes the bulb gets removed. $1000 is worth taking a chance on, but that’s me. I’m a shade tree mechanic, former aircraft mechanic and currently industrial turbine mechanic.

There is no serviceable fuel filter on a Neon, it's part of the fuel pump. It does not have a Mass Air Flow sensor. Its EFI is a speed / density system with a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. The first generation from 1995 to 1999 was a simple, easy to fix crap can ... we race two of them in SCCA. The second generation from 2000+ is slightly larger, stronger and more refined. My 2002 R/T was one of the best cars I've ever owned ... 14 years and 150k miles and never went to the dealer for any warranty service.

With the Mustang - I'm not convinced that lack of fuel would cause it to shake like that. In my experience, fuel issues make your car surge but not stutter. Generally, the Neon was considered a 40,000 mile throwaway car. My older brother had a Neon years ago. I took it the dealer one time and all the mechanics gathered around it to verify the 70,000 mile odometer reading. The shifter, for a front drive car, worked quite well. But, whenever we did the Italian tune-up, the leading edges of the doors would pull away from the body - you could see daylight. My brother died ten years ago. I suspect that Neon may also be dead by now.

Purch'd 05 neon new about $14k-ish. 6yrs later put a 33k mile replacement motor, new clutch, total $1200. 3yrs later, a/c comp and drier, $650. After that decided to replace.all front and rear suspension goodies, $1200. All this done by a professional. Two timing belt and water pump changes, typical, both total $600. All total, less than $3k. Car runs good, 32 to 34mpg depending on how I drive, city/county combined. So, under $3k for a great work and grocery car. That $3k is a lot cheaper than the two ne cars I would have had to purchase in the mean time. Even buying a used one, worth it even if you have to fix something major.

Yeap I know PLENTY of people who owned neons and have had no problems. A couple were even over 150-200k miles on the same motor, being daily driven 90 miles\80mph to work everyday. Air conditioning ran ice cold to I even remember complimenting about it. Just routine maintenance and that's all they did. This guy might be a mechanic but very stupid to say "it's a junk car"and it'll break. It's all about how you take care of it. Also i see time after time after time people whining about how much of a "p.o.s." their particilar car was when they owned it. Meanwhile they were literally the 3rd or 4th owner! Lmao. They have not a clue how the car was maintained, which is everything. Even with a Carfax that don't reallt matter(sure it helps ). Blows my mind how dumb some folks really are. Surprised to hear it coming from a "mechanic", which tells you something when you think about it.

Neons have a large fan base. If you can work on your own car, that always helps. I have a 2000 Neon with 243,000 miles, and still going strong, despite having had a noticeable piston slap for many, many years. It is super reliable, and after I had the head gasket and leaking front crank seal replaced at over 100,000 miles it hasn't taken much to keep it on the road. It gets the cheapest Super Tech oil from Walmart, which get replaced approximately every 5000 miles whether it needs it or not, and it gets over 30 MPG on the highway. Couldn't ask for much more out of a car.

Our 1995 Neon (new) went 130K (when we sold it) only needing rear struts and a head gasket (they were known to fail until the revised MLS gaskets were fitted on the 1997+ ones). But, I maintain the heck out of my vehicles!

I own a 2005 Dodge Neon with 201,000 miles on it. It has the original engine and transmission and has never had any major work done to it except for a new clutch. It's been a great, reliable car! I'm currently repainting it and look to put another 100K on it before I ever give it up.

How has your Dodge Neon held up? Might be getting a new one here soon with 142,000 miles
@dzim88222 ай бұрын
@@andrew7650It now has 242,000 miles on it. I did a partial rebuild at about 209k with the engine in the car. I changed the rod bearings, rings, head gasket, valve seals. I did this only as a preventative measure, as it was still running fine. I am now using it to do deliveries, so I plan on putting another 200k on it.

Always great, informative (and funny) videos, Scotty! Two quick notes: NEVER, EVER, EVER buy a car that has broken air conditioning, no matter what the owner says. If it was "cheap" or "easy" to fix, he would've done it! A/C problems are always expensive - and the "fixes" don't always last. Pass. Move on. There are plenty of cars out there with *good* air conditioners. Finally, I bought a new 1996 Neon, drove it for 200,000 miles. Great car! I did put a new head gasket in it along the way (the "Neon problem"), but I didn't mill the head and the new gasket leaked. I finally sold the car for junk, but some time later I ended up seeing the dang thing driving around town! Some goober must've bought it and put a new motor in it. Which is what I should've done :-/

Mitsubishis are the main thing that I've worked on over the last 19 years and they have always been reliable for me. Many of the Eclipses, Talons, Lasers etc are still zipping around on mostly original parts after 20+ years... I think that says enough. If the cars are more performance-oriented then of course their maintenance intervals will be shorter and that's where most of the problems arise. People ignore maintenance and focus on performance or just ignore the schedules completely, and then when the next person inherits the car, they have to fix all of the messes. Most of the ones I owned I spent all of my money replacing worn out parts due to owner neglect, not by design flaw. The Mitsu 4G63 is rated as one of the best 4 cylinder engines ever produced. 180-210 HP depending on the model with performance that can beat many muscle cars right from the factory and still getting 30 mpg most other times.

Eclipse KCB you ever work on any 3000gts? those cars can be nightmares if you dont keep everything in check. I have a dodge stealth rt non turbo 5 speed and the only problem ive had so far was the fuel pressure regulator started leaking so i swapped it out.

I've wanted one now for 18 years but never had the money. I've seen under the hood and can agree that it is scary lol. Top-of-the-line cars, meant solely for performance now, maintenance headache later. They are amazing cars though... Far ahead of it's time in many ways. The VR-4 and Stealth TT AWD could compete with most supercars at the time for less than half the price.

Inherited a 2004 Dodge Neon SXT from my Mom 18 months ago, it had 11K miles on it, was garage kept and was only run for errands once or twice a week, it had yearly oil changes and new tires put on just before I drove it from Detroit to Virginia. I've put 10,500 K since then and it has running great, the only cost so far to me has been oil changes and a Cam Sensor replacement, while my wife and I have been averaging approximately 31 MPG on it. I've only owned and drove two Honda Accords for the past 26 years, and a 1999 Accord is still our primary vehicle, so I was worried about the reliability of the Neon as a second car based on Scotty's reviews concerning how bad Chrysler products have become, but so far so good. Every time I take the Neon in for oil changes, different mechanics want to buy it, so I'm optimistic as I will be taking care of it in memory to my late Mom, plus have been encouraged by the some of the good reviews read here from previous Neon owners. Great videos overall Scotty, they make me laugh and keep me informed as to what is happening in the world cars and trucks, as my Detroit roots just still run as high octane in my blood!

I bought a 2005 neon at 81,000 miles on it for $2500 just 3 years ago and it's my daily vehicle, literally 7 days a week...for that price it had a couple of dents and a cracked wheel but everything else in good condition...seller is a mechanic and provide paperwork work of all parts cost and spent about $2,000 on the engine..over the past 3 years I've spent about $1,500 on parts and labor...that's not bad at all, always reliable...I love this damn car
@UNKLELUKE866 жыл бұрын
1000 dollar neon will have a few issues they are not as tough as a 5 speed 86 Corolla paid 1100 in 2005 had a bad water pump and it was fun and challenging to replace the water pump . miss her . . my 2 cents .
@Lray4x46 жыл бұрын
You can't really go by what a scanner says to tell how good of shape the older vehicles are, it could have a check engine on with a few codes and still run just fine, or it could have a blown head gasket, worn piston rings or any other major issue and not even trip a code. The early obd2 systems were primitive technology compared to what new vehicles are.

Jim Her I think most sports cars are unreliable because of how they're treated. There are still plenty of sports cars out there, Mustangs, supras, Camaro's etc. But if you floor your car every 5 seconds, it will break relatively quickly. What's the point of a sports car then if I don't go fast? You ask, moderation, is my answer. Enjoy your cars performance, but within reason. Don't floor it after every 5 seconds, instead, maybe after every 30 seconds.
