Jaguars have actually improved since Tata took them over compared to the Ford and earlier days. Something about Tata investing more money into the company. Same as Volvo under Chinese ownership. It was actually Ford that rescued Jaguar from extinction in the early 90's. Most of the problems Jaguar had in the 70's and 80's stemmed from the relationship with British Leyland. Many people have an outdated perception of both the Ford and Jaguar brands. Ford makes more reliable products than what people give them credit for. Thousands of high mileage Crown Victoria taxis, and Lincoln Town Car livery vehicles prove this fact.

I didn’t buy it so I can waste money on endless repairs and I also didn’t buy it thinking it would be like Toyota or Honda (reliability wise) just seeing and driving this beautiful car every day makes me want to take care of it so it can last. It makes you want to work even harder every day and realize you can have finer things in life. If you are trying to save money, don’t buy any expensive car. Also Don’t buy it if you don’t love it or not going to take care of it. If you ignore it, it won’t last just like your model wife. 😄

Ok, so I listened to Scotty's opinion on Jaguars. As a Jaguar enthusiast myself, who owns a 1996 Xj Vanden Plas edition I have the best experience of my life owning and driving this car. It has been my daily driver for almost 10 years. I do most of the preventative maintenance myself and guess what, my Jaguar is pushing almost 300,000 original miles on its 4.0 staright six engine , differential, and ZF transmission. I drive this car everyday in the streets of Arizona in that extreme heat, never overheated the engine, never broke timing chain, never damaged a piston. Only driving with Castrol Full Synthetic Titanium and Bosh filters. I will admit that these cars once you learn them, you can work on engine easy yourself , parts are cheap, less than $300 for certain components. I am planning to add may be another 100,000 miles before put the car to rest in a storage. AJ 16 Jag engines can last with proper maintenance up till 1 million miles. Most of you do not believe me, well my Jag is pushing the mileage limit and it keeps going. How's that for inspiration. Btw, driving a 1990s Jaguar and listening to Nalin & Kane- Beach Ball on my vintage Alpine Jaguar stereo is a pure Bliss.

I just purchased a 1995 Jaguar XJ6 with the 4.0 inline 6 cylinder engine for 400 bucks and all it needs is a fuel pump that I already brought for $100. Getting it put on today. Hope all goes well. It's a beautiful car.
@Cloud75770
@Cloud75770 6 жыл бұрын
@@jamesw7072 Great James. Once you put the new pump, which for this model is submerged in the fuel tank, full up the tank and drive the car for a few hours. Always remember, these single pump models can have their fuel pump last almost a decade, as long as you never go below 1/2 of unleaded fuel, usually (A91) and you keep adding Lucas Fuel Injection cleaner, every two weeks. Note, fuel keeps pump cold, so if you never go below 1/2 of fuel in your Jag you can save that pump and do not overheat it. When I replaced mine, the brand was WALBRO. I put the same model and I am also a happy driver. My old one lasted exactly 10 years considering the fact that I am driving my 96 XJ6 Vanden Plas every day in Arizona for the last 12 years where in the summer we reach 112F. The AJ 16 engine is bullet proof, the ZF 4 speed transmission is also very dependable, as long you replace trans.filter and oil. With rear differential , you will not have major issues as long as you replace oil on time and keep that high temp grease on its greasing points.Congrstulations on your purchase and drive the first generation of the legendary X300 Jag with a smile. Happy motoring.

I drove alot I was even living out of the car for 2 months when I fell on hard times in 2013 huge amount of idle time. I have had a few issues. New alternator new throttle body spark plugs starter serpentine belt tensioner window motor brake pads and honestly that's it over the years other then normal maintenance it's was a trooper. Changed oil every 10k transmission fluid once at 80k and coolant at 125k. As long as you take care of them they are decent cars. I now have a 2018 jaguar xe 35t I got brand new tuned it at 5k miles with ecu remap and bigger pulley for supercharger. Puting down 405hp to the wheels dyno. The newer jags are excellent cars. The problem as with many car owner is the lack of general care. Scotty hasn’t driven a new one, I assure you of that yet speaks so definitive authoritatively. If you go to KZbin and look up the matchups against jaguar both XF as well as the XJ is no comparison not only the ride but also the handling of these cars out perform BMW, Audi, Cadillac and head to head matchup’s on the track. So Scotty needs to more homework , I assure you. Had my XF mine since 2010 and still getting complements.

Fan from India here. Tata makes reliable (not japanese reliable but still 2million kilometres and they still run) cars . They were originally more into trucks and stuff .Interestingly they were once going sell their motor division to ford. But the deal fell out because ford said the same thing Enzo Ferrari said to Lamborghini. Flash forward a few years and they bought land rover and jaguar. And recently they've been on a roll. Releasing some pretty good cars here in India. Also they make better jaguars than ford ever did.

If you want want to own one find a mechanic with years of experience who knows and loves the line. Do ALL maintenance recommended.but avoid dealers. Also avoid any mechanic who can "fix anything". They''ll do $1,000 worth of damage doing a $100 repair. They have to know the car. Parts are pricey anytime but I never needed many parts.. Biggest repairs, a radiator and the GM AC compressors.

Jaguars are made in England, the new chasis and bodies are aluminum (no rust) and the Ingenium Diesel engines are the ONLY ONES not related to Audi, BMW, VW emission scandal of 5 years ago. To say new Jaguars are a money pit is irresponsible at best, Scotty
@bigjml
@bigjml 6 жыл бұрын
No Diesel engine fitted to any Jaguar came from BMW/Audi/VW. Land Rovers and Range Rovers came with the TD5 in TD6 from BMW but again that was too long ago to be relevant. The 2.7tdv6 and 3.0tdv6 are (or in case of the 2.7 were) a joint Ford/PSA/JLR design. And the 2.0tdci engine in the Mondeo based X Type was also a Ford engine with a camchain not a belt. Any car can be a money pit, My XJL was problematic but it also did well over 160k in the first 3 years. Three colleagues had XJLs of the same age and they had no issues other than one needing a forced DPF Regen. I don't think Jags are any less reliable than other complicated high end margues these days.

Got a daily driver S-type 3.0 200000 miles As reliable as my last one, mondeo, sold that at 350000 miles. Mind you Jaguar parts are cheap in europe. Great car and id rather repair that than repair a boring but equally reliable econobox. Jaguar got really good -93 ish after Ford took over. Only thing is i had to replace so far is a breather hose and the top radiator hose assembly which i knew needed replacement when I bought it. If you want the cheapest A to B car Jaguar isn’t the one but if you’re bitten by the Jag bug they’re not as bad as Scotty says. And if you don’t look after them they will be expensive money pits. I find out how to reverse the parking break motor in the trunk so I bought it then revered it and watched the dealers mouth drop as I drove off the lot. Drove it to almost 160,000 miles with no mechanical problems. Was a great car even drove it across the country. I got rid of it due to the rear wheel drive and living in a snowy climate. To this day I wish I would have kept it. Good news is I sold it for what I bought it for so I didn’t loose a penny

My 2002 Jag X-type was one of my best road cars ever. $3600 auction in 2009. 83K, and I sold it $1500 off wholesale at 140K for 3 grand to a good friend 5 years later. Ford Contour aftermarket parts for a lot of it. AWD, 5 speed, 3.0, and it would outrun a new 330 XI with 100k+ on it. GREAT car, but plan on getting bent over hard if you have no repair expertise, especially if you take it to a Jag dealership. With proper ice tires it would rip through Upstate NY storms, but caution, it is barely 5" clearance for deep snow.

I can buy a nice one for around 16 to 23k with low miles and good service history. Mine was a '78 VDP Daimler with a 350. Utterly reliable. Parts inexpensive (but that was Australia). Anyone out there reading this, if you swap out a V12 for a 350, put a four speed (or more) in it. Gearing's all wrong without overdrive. Rear brakes are a PITA but you can work around it.

I own a 1999 ford mustang. I would suggest getting this as a good first car if you want to learn about cars. It's not its reliable as a Lexus sure but whenever something breaks on the mustang, parts are cheap and plentiful. It's also dead easy to work on. I didnt know a crap ton about cars before getting this car. Lots of great videos on KZbin whenever you want to get your hands dirty and do basic maintenance on your own.

Bollox, Cluster Head. How many Jags have you owned? I've had nine and one had problems after a mechanic fitted a gasket incorrectly. A Yankee mechanic told me it's Mercs that are unreliable these days. Jags look great and have soul, and while it's true there were problems back in the '70s, there were problems with all makes then.

That's how Jaguars are. My first was rear ended and destroyed and it really made me pissed off. The second one I was forced to sell because of life circumstances. I actually had two buyers and one offered a high price but was a total retard who I knew would abuse it. I sold the beauty to a fellow enthusiast for less money to make sure he went to a good home.

I am a Brit living in North America. I am so glad that you mentioned that Jaguar cars are crap. I keep meeting people who are so proud that they're driving a 'British" vehicle. I always tell them that if they ever visit the UK, they will not see anyone driving them, because the British know they are crap vehicles. Once I was there for two weeks driving around and I didn't see one. But north Americans think they're driving something special.

I like your videos BUT you have little Jaguar knowledge. Yes mid 70's to mid 80's were a real problem, but with private ownership the cars improved and by 1994 they were the most reliable and bullet proof cars on the road. The X300 were and are excellent, still have my 1996 4 litre Sport, was my daily driver for 10 years no problems at all. I also have an X350 4.2 V8, still my daily driver and no problems at all, just the normal consumables and it gets 8 L/100 on the highway and 12 L/100 city. JD Power agreed, they were and are often up there with Lexus/Toyota. My wife has a 2004 X-Type, also perfect, one warrantee claim when new, CD played jammed. It is annoying that so much rubbish is published on Jags, I hoped you were more aware than some. I have many friends, family and acquaintances that have them, if not abused and serviced, like you advocate, they are all fine and few issues. Service them and look after them and they will last a long, long time. Parts, all available by Jaguar (Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust) and after market (e.g. SNG Barrett and similar) for every model and they stand behind them 100%, prices are reasonable for the QUALITY and technology. Certainly less expensive and better availability than Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Volvo and Lexus. I buy parts in Australia, UK and USA and they internet allows me to achieve the best prices and usually I have anything in a week. Parts are often cheaper than local low tech parts for GM or Ford and the quality is better. As for the TATA ownership, jaguar UK is now one of the top UK research company's and producing more cars every year. The leadership, innovation and quality is a good as any. Plus the cars are great to drive and last. Sure cutting edge technology has issues, but the Jaguar is doing it well with less issues than the competitors. Usually electronics have the issues, engine, driveline and suspension are world class. Jaguar stands behind the product and the support is brilliant and sorts the issues out so future ownership should be fine. Resale prices in Australia are equal to the competition if not a little better. So I really consider the view expressed as not being the best informed.

We had a black 2005 X-Type with the 3.0 V6 and AWD. The car was not perfect, had a couple headlights burn out and the windshield washer tank randomly cracked for some reason(probably brutal winters where I live), cloth trim on the a-pillars came loose and drooped(I fixed that with spray adhesive), this stuff happened in about 6 years of ownership in bad winter weather and a car that daily driven and not always cared for in the best manner. Mechanically, it was a tank, never an issue with engine, tranny and AWD system. Another thing of note was the high quality of the paint and the thickness of the body panels vs. Japanese cars and American cars, which feels like tin foil. It was beautiful to look at, the dash had real walnut trim...which no other car in that price range had. Sold it in 2014 cause we moved far away. I miss driving that thing, it made you feel special driving down the road and did not cost much for the privilege(got it used). I have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT now....and it is dead reliable....but it is also dead inside(no soul).

David Mcknight I agree. I also have to say, that Mercedes, Bmw and Audi will last for a long time, IF used and serviced correctly, as specified in the manual. People don't understand the difference in philosophy between german and japanese engineers. German engineer: they should use this machine exactly as I tell them to (very low tolerances) and so it will run like a dream, for a very long time. And if they don't use it like I instruct them, they will destroy the car and it will be their problem. Because they are stupid! Japanese engineer: I will design this machine, knowing that people will do all sorts of things with it, so it will be able to take all kinds of beating. So I will do whatever I can, to make this machine withstand a wide range of circumstances (big tolerances) without breaking down. And this ladies and gentlemen, is the crucial difference in their thought process. Btw I still drive a Saab, and it has not come even close to letting me down, and believe me that I drive it like it should be driven! My first car, been driving it for 10 years straight. It feels like this thing can run forever...
