The Truth about Ceramic Coatings:
Truth #1: Ceramic coatings make maintenance easier but they still require maintenance (especially if you want to get the most out of your coating)
Truth #2: Water spots are the #1 issue that can happen with certain coatings, especially if you have hard water, park near sprinklers ,or let dirty rain water spots sit and bake on the car for long periods of time. Regular maintenance can help mineral deposits from accumulating but some may require water spot removers.
Truth #3: Coatings are chemical resistant (most up to a pH of 13) but they aren’t bullet proof. Road film, bird droppings, bug splatter, road salts (which are acidic), strong car wash soaps and high alkaline cleaners can weaken the hydrophobic properties and even kill some low-quality coatings.
Truth #4: Regular maintenance (think once a month at least) can help these substances (road film and water spots) from sitting for too long in the paint and keep them from weakening the hydrophobic properties or clogging the coating.
Truth #5: No coating is permanent. But they do last longer than any wax or sealant, will make maintenance easier and help keep your vehicle looking like new for longer periods of time but you get out of it what you put into it. Neglect it or abuse it and they won’t last nearly as long as yoj think.
Truth #6: Not all coatings are created equal. Even with perfect maintenance some coatings just aren’t that great and won’t last very long. So do your research (on products AND detailers) and have realistic expectations!

I’m doing a video with Nick Rutter from Mckees 37 next week about ceramic coatings. What questions would YOU like for him to answer?
@chromo48
@chromo48 Жыл бұрын
Ever since I saw your video about the 10 year graphene coating from Mckees (graphene pro coat) I've been very curious to see something to back up that sort of endurance claim. Of course, I'm sure that length of time is under the best possible circumstances, i.e. garaged vehicle, regular maintenance washes, proper application, etc. But if there's anything additional Nick can offer to help support that 10 year claim, I'd love to hear it. Or -- how long could somebody expect that coating to last on a daily driver in normal conditions? 5 to 7 years? Thank you, Chelsea.

Since he is in a state that has lots of love bugs, just like me, ask him how the coating holds up to the damage that they would normally leave behind vs a vehicle uncoated. I'm really liking their product, but what I don't like about ceramic coatings especially from the "PRO" applications is that the warranties are basically useless by the time you get to the end of reading them. It cost a lot of money around here for a coating to be applied that I have to take such meticulous care of for it to last. If they offer such great protection, then they should be able to stand up to most any chemical put on them, or any neglect from not washing them as often. If not, then what makes them better than a good spray sealant that last from one wash to the next.

I'd be curious about the effectiveness of only using hydro graphene vs a full coating. If you wash and detail your own cars, what would be the benefit of a full coating over using hydro graphene every 2-3 months since the hydro graphene seems to be close to the strength of a full coating. For instance, is the 9H hardness really necessary if you have a good stacked hydro graphene coating on your car?

@@02reaper - Ceramic Coatings are “ Supposed “ to be harder than factory clear . Gives a sacrificial layer of protection. Other sealants waxes give you about a day to get something off before it eats into it .

Remember the coating has a shelf life in the bottle once you open it. I ceramic coated my truck, wife’s car. Boat and motor, motorcycle, bicycles and even the bathtub and shower walls 😂 and I still have some left.

This video applies to ANY "coating" you put on your car. You can "maintain" your Carnauba Wax coated car as well. The problem I have with nano coatings is the marketing. They make them seem like the bulletproof vest for your car. Its not true. Depending on where you live in the world nano coatings can actually cause more damage. Example? I live in the SoCal Desert where temps reach over 120F in the summer. We also get Monsoons that come by during these crazy hot months. On an SIO2 coated car, if left out in the sun, a thunderstorm comes by rains for 15 minutes and then the hot 120F heat comes back an hour later? Well guess what? Your whole coated car is water etched with water spots so badly you have to compound the entire vehicle to get them off. Ironically, on cars coated with your conventional wax either synthetic polymer or carnauba this does not happen. Additionally, most nano coatings require ALLOT of prep work to get them to bond properly and most folks I know don't have the time, or the money to pay someone to do this work for them. I won't even go into cure times for some of these products which is ridiculous as well. Then the so called "warranty" that is pro rated and doesn't cover anything really. Its all hype. The bottom line is, find a product that you like and use it often. Find something that is easy for you to use, and something that isn't going to take your 2 days off to apply or prep your car to apply. Doing basic upkeep on your vehicles finish will pay off over the year's regardless of what you choose to apply.

Truth. My mom washes her car a few times over the winter at the touchless. When I get to it on the spring it's absolutely fine. Just stains and grime - and that's with Optimum Opti-Seal. I may try Gloss Coat this year. I've had great luck with that coating.

Looks good...I know you are tight with Nick from Mckees' 37, but this video still seems straight up! haha. I have used this coating and the newer version as well. I will say they acted nearly the same on application, and only difference was pricing. I'm definitely happy to see this update. I think their graphene line of maintenance products is a little overpriced to be using as a pro, but honestly the quality seems to be there, and it's a small price to pay in the long run. It's also great for customer synergy.

Hi Chelsea. U've put out some good videos, but this is the best. I think detail shops need to put out pamphlets when u get ceramic coatings done. Mine said just wash it, but it requires much more. I, too, would rather see someone NOT wash it than go thru automatic car washes. Wintertime is tough because, do u just rinse it off when super cold, or just leave alone until warm enough water won't freeze. 👍

Good information and detail (as usual) thank you. My question is a maintainence question. With a ceramic coated car (mine) having put on 2 coats of cereamic coatings last August, the car sat out in a parking lot for the winter. Getting back home it had some scratches on a panel. Light scratche lines (mostly only into the top coat not into the paint - except for a very small area). So what steps, would you suggest, do I need to take to get it back to "like new" in appearance?

Hydro graphene is amazing. I've used it as a topper on my ceramic from day 1 and it's like magic how slick it is. I've used it on non coated cars and they legitimately look like they have a ceramic coating after it sits for a couple of hours, and it will last the 4-6 months on a car that sits outside all day too. On wheels its awesome, I don't even ceramic coat my wheels I just use hydro graphene. My next car I'm going to try the mckees graphene coating. Curious about it and also using it on the windows. One thing I'm curious about is if you apply hydro graphene every 2-3 months (assuming maybe you wash your own car, etc.) How will you actually know if the ceramic coating is getting weak? The hydro graphene is so strong I feel like it would either mask if the ceramic is getting weak, or it'll just protect the ceramic coating forever. Not sure which.

I have considered getting a pro ceramic coating . If I have to maintain it, then that does not work for me? What is the difference than using an off the shelf spray-on SiO2 sealant/wax . I would still have to spray on a topper with the pro coating. I might as well use something like Griot's 3-in-1 ceramic periodically. What is the least maintenance for the best effect strategy?

I will sometimes use a product like Carpro Reset and what that does is it kind of helps remove any toppers from a coating and can really kind of reveal the true nature of a ceramic coating and let you know what’s going on. They don’t hurt coatings, but are a great way to reset things and assess a Coatings performance.

Problem is that the average person, and it’s probably safe to say, the majority of people don’t wash their own car or even wash their cars at all. It’s easier for them to take it to a commercial car wash every month or two. I don’t have time to wash my own car plus I live in NYC so it’s not easy for me to wash my own car but I’ll wash it every week or two and I’ll pay extra at the hand car wash instead of going through the machines. 👍🏽

The warranty claims are backed by the manufacturers terms and conditions. Be cautious taking away from the stated conditions by pushing in house maintenance plans. I would encourage you to sell all installations as A.) Coating Applied Only B.) Coating with Bi-Weekly Maintenance and C.) Coating with Bi-Weekly Maintenance + Annual Rejuvination. Let the customer ASK why these are important and discuss the limitations of warranty claims within the manufacturers guidelines. Paint Correction should be separate charge as Single or Multi Stage , along with selling coating manufacturer specific after care maintenance products to those who desire to DIY. All of whch are mini add on profit centers!

You should be maintenance washing this vehicle every 4 weeks. He invested all that time and $ for a coating then doesn’t wash it in 6 months? SMH

Keep in mind it was over winter where most up here don’t wash at all until the frost is gone

I would point him to a touchless wash he can use or a wash bay where he can high pressure rinse. Usually the owners will salt the floor area so you can stand safely even in below freezing weather as you hot it with some water to knock down the perma dirt buildup…. I look at it like a “better than nothing” situation to get through those cold months…

Coatings are way overrated. As you just showed, after 6 months it's barely still there but now you have to top it with "coating maintenance" products. From here on out, all you're seeing is the properties of the topper and no longer the true coating. It will be impossible to know the coating's longevity as it's constantly being topped off regularly. In my opinion they aren't worth the hassle. Coating companies know this and that's why they want their consumers to keep topping it off. A sealant will easily last you a year with way less work.

After 6 months unwashed it actually looked very impressive after we did a simple wash and it didn’t NEED topped but I did so to stay on top of maintenance

I'm not sure what coating you were looking at, but this one was far from being barely there. It looked pretty fantastic for having been completely neglected for 6 months. I'm certainly impressed!

@@fjoco1 Yes, I saw the entire video. Coatings need too much upkeep to keep them going for the way they're being sold to people. It's actually the properties of the toppers that you are seeing on the paint, not the original coating. All coating companies have maintenance toppers for a reason, the coating would be crap without them.

@@Tundra_Guy Dude she said it has not been washed since the coating was first applied so no topper was applied either. Watch the video again and listen closely.
