Because the realistic looking ones are terrifying. They're really cool and well made, but something that actually looks like a real anthropomorphic animal and not something out of fan art is unsettling to some people. Fortunately, those are super expensive so they aren't that common.

We are misunderstood because it is just who you want to be, back when the Fandom first came out people got a bad vibe and that's what people think of us today, but it just isn't true! Especially when you get into the really expensive suits from fursuit companies like Mischief Makers, just to name one out of hundreds, it’s so much work put into a loved community.

Life is pretty miserable and if people can find a way to enjoy themselves in a way that doesn't end up hurting themselves or others while meeting like-minded people, I guess it can't be a bad thing. I still don't know what it is about it that causes revulsion. I experience that feeling too when I see something like this. But I get that feeling from extreme anime or comic fans as well. Maybe it's just the indulgence and frivolity of it. Anyway, if they're not hurting anyone, let them do their thing.

Hello Fellow Humans, First I don't care what people do as long as they aren't hurting children or hurting others or hurting animals. Be whoever you want. However you have to realize furries are different from people who like women with ears and tails of animals. A person in a furry suit isn't my thing at all. However if I saw a woman with say cat ears and tail or rabbit ears and tail or fox ears and tail, etc. I would not say no at all. I remember seeing a show on KZbin where a guy "professor" explains the levels of furry. Furries who dress up that's level 5. Just a woman with ears and tails that's level 1. Again I don't care as long as you're happy and healthy and not hurting anyone. Then be who you want. To be honest I would be more afraid of a Christian than a furry. A furry has never once started a war or tortured someone. So facts matter. Love your life the way you want.

I was into art at a young age, and found furries on DeviantArt when I joined at 13 (DA is nice because safe mode is always on strict until you turn 18), and for me, growing up with undiagnosed ADHD, making art and characters was a way I could let my creativity run wild in new ways. I'm a strictly SFW creator, nothing adult with my characters, and the community is great, I meet others and learn how they overcame what I'm going through, from ADHD, to university struggles, to not knowing how to deal with haters. There are always people bullying others, due to disability, interests, or just being different, and having people who help others learn how to deal with it, has been very important.

i kind of always thought furries have some strong links to bestiality & other gross stuff,, now i see that isn't the case. very informative. as a trans person myself and someone who is frequently interested in different fandoms, i can partly identify with feeling like an outsider/being unable to express yourself AND being super invested in fictional characters. i can't say i'd try this stuff myself but i dont see any reason for being cruel to others for doing so.

I’m not trying to be a butthole, but I am trying to have a teaching moment here, one you may not need, but alas here it is anyway: You found out what you knew about this group was grossly misrepresented in media, just as media grossly misrepresented and still does, trans people, how many other groups do you think are out there, how do you feel about drug addicts, now, how would that change if I told you there is a lot of evidence that suggests addiction is not really an addicts fault, and that it’s caused by a mental illness, which is partially genetic but largely influenced and caused by ones environment, especially in youth and adolescence, but also in adulthood (ie in Vietnam a lot of our troops became addicted to drugs like heroin but no longer did them back home, what changed? The soldiers environment changed.) I use the drug addict as an example because it usually is the one people of even disenfranchised backgrounds have a lot of hatred and resentment towards. Largely because the vast majority of addicts are misunderstood. You wouldn’t even know who they are unless they tell you they do drugs in many cases. But it’s always those that are the most entrapped and sick who get the media exposure, the most visible and eccentric, Tom the heroin addicted plumber doesn’t get a headline in the paper, Jack who lives under the bridge and commits petty theft is who gets shown, Jack sells more papers than Tom does, Tom is too boring and not scary. Tom is still negatively affected by this in many ways, if he gets caught, he gets a felony just like Jacks 2, why does Jack have 2? Oh yes because possession of many kinds of drugs alone is enough to get a felony, just having a point of heroin will land you in prison, a point is like 100 mg or something, not much, smaller than a Tylenol. I could go on, but I hope this post helps you further what you’ve probably already learned, sometimes certain things tend to be very different from that which was advertised in media. So we need to make sure we look into things further than just what we are told, and not be so quick to judge people.

Daniel Kirmani Trust me, it can be hard being yourself. Being a furry allows us to be whoever and whatever we want. And honestly, so what if we use it to deal with psychological issues or life struggles. It's better than resorting to drugs, alcohol, selfharm, or suicide. Life is too short, man. The Mulatt They seem to be a typical exile or wallflower personality with a twist. Maybe they edged away from typical society at a younger age and attached them self to cartoons to fill gaps. Finding the furry community could have been a perfect combination of an accepting group with a familiar face. Regardless of their thought process origins I don't see any red flags in their personality.
