I did some of the cinematography on Godzilla Battle Royale (the crowd scene you showcase is my work, natch!). Billy poured his heart and soul into making that film with almost no prior experience in filmmaking and it's a testament to his creativity and imagination. Also much love for Kaiju Killer, that one actually came out in 2009!! I also shoot and edit the short films made by Dojo Studios at GFEST and can attest to the complexities of filming amateur tokusatsu - further exacerbated by our limited time, scope, and resources available to us each year for production. Still, one of the questions we get asked every year is why we don't make Godzilla shorts, and our answer is two-fold. First, (to us) it's more fun to play around in a sandbox that doesn't have pre-conceived notions on what characters should look like, act, or think. We draw inspiration from Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, etc, mix and match it to our own liking, and create our own lore and mythology! Secondly (and most relevantly), we don't want to get in hot water with Toho. Anyway, great video and keep it up!

I have been trying to get funds to make a Hulk fan film for almost 3 years. I've attempted three separate crowdfunding campaigns and they all failed. Considering how "Spider-Man: Lotus" and other controversial fan films had been received, I fear that people had become less willing to support fan films. It's unfortunate on my end because I poured out my heart and soul while writing the script. Also, I've got a team behind me waiting to make this project happen. This is a problem I'm facing and I think other fan filmers could relate.

Doctor Who has plenty of fan media, including fan films, prose and audio dramas (I've released three books of Doctor Who fiction myself). Devious is a famous unreleased Doctor Who fan film that has apparently been in production for a couple of decades, and Jon Pertwee (the Third Doctor) even acted in some scenes before he passed away. The BBC tends to be pretty permissive of Doctor Who fan content, but they have cracked down on fan media now and then, and are known to be quite stingy about the use of episode footage in reviews on KZbin.

One of the most popular ones is probably the Triangle vs Monkey series by Blunt Brothers Production. It's an animated story about Godzilla and Kong first fighting each other and then accidentally landing in other universes and being forced to fight the creatures and characters from those universes and the story slowly evolves from there. It's great fun with amazing humor.

Just so you are aware, companies like Toho (or any big film studio) considers that to be unsolicited material and will often discard it immediately without looking at it. They do it to protect themselves legally so you then can't try and sue them saying "They ripped me off and didn't give me credit!". It sucks but that's just how the industry works :/

@@rsgreptilesuk the Reason why Legendary can use Godzilla is because unlike Fan Films, they bought the license to it, and they can use the Character until the License Expires Just because they have the license doesn’t mean they own the Character, it still belongs to Toho, so even if you were to use the Monsterverse Goji, you will still have Toho Knocking at your door with a takedown in hand Now if it was a monsterverse monster that isn’t from Toho (Scylla, Behemoth Methuselah, Muto’s) You’d be safe from them but not from Legendary themselves. If you want to get out of legal trouble your best bet is to just make an Original Kaiju with, Toho Owns Godzilla but not the Idea of a Giant Fire Breathing Monster, Lizard, Or Turtle.

This is interesting. I firmly believe there's a predatory agency 'watching' out for Toho's best interests, while receiving a cut. Because as strict as Toho is known to be, they've been equally lenient. G is never to be seen together with Superman, they're now fighting in DC. G MUST have 4 toes, fingers & 3 rows of dorsals, look at Tristar's Zilla. G must never emote, look at him in the MonsterVerse. Biggest of all, you can never make a G fan film, the guy who originated Gemstone G is not only now working with Toho, but his work is now canon to the Heisei series! I guess your experience depends.

I’ve been wanting to watch Godzilla Heritage ever sense I found out about it. I just want a copy online to exist to it doesn’t become lost media. Everyone celebrated when Mickey Mouse became public domain. In my opinion, here’s why Toho should NOT be taking down fan films with Godzilla… If people DID want to make money off their fan films, they’d have to give their (accidental, or not) money made off the fan film TO Toho AFTER making it, or anything, really. If Toho doesn’t like that, they’ll have to realize what’s going on with Minus One. They’re being too strict. I think all fans need to do with their fan films is say (in the beginning of the movie, or credits): “Despite the title, we do not own Godzilla. Godzilla and related characters belong to Toho.” (I personally don’t know if that’s been done already…) These are just my views though… I don’t know if they’ll work on anyone. I just want to (personally) help. P. S. I’ll take criticism as long as everyone is not mean-spirited about it.

Those were authorized by Toho. There’s official merch of them. To me, that’s more an official project rather than a fan project. Is it technically made by fans? Yes, but it’s not an independent fan film like Godzilla Heritage.

I love a well made fam film, but yes I do also recognize that IP owners have every right to enforce their rights to their properties. When people get mad that fan films get fan films get shut down also need to understand that the the IP owner has that right. It’s their creation and they invest a lot of money in those properties.
