Is US Army's M110 big & beautiful weapon outstanding or so-so? Why did the the M110 7.62 x 51mm rifle come as fast and it went? The US Army developed the gun mainly for use by Special Forces Operators and it has now trickled down to your every day infantryman.

Currently in the Army, the M110 is only given to battalion sniper sections. The M110a1 went to the line companies and battalion recon teams (different from sniper sections). The M110 is built to be a sniper rifle. The M110a1 is only a squad designated marksman rifle. Minute differences but the M110 is more precise than the a1 variant. So I see the M110 sticking around for a while longer.

Having previously served as a sniper and now currently serving as a weapons repairer I have opinions from two different viewpoints. From the repairs standpoint, I greatly appreciate a lot of the engineering improvements that Knight's Armament made to the AR-10 design. In a couple places instead of tolerance fitted pins that have to be replaced every time they're removed, KA used set screws that can be reused indefinitely as long as you don't cross thread or over torque them. Instead of three jangly gas rings, you have one staggered cut gas ring. It's hard to name a lot of the things off the top of my head, but when I was going to the armorers course I remember having numerous moments of "oh, this is genius. Why doesn't everyone do it this way?" (Because it's more expensive). As a sniper, I quite like the m110. Sure, it doesn't have the same range or perfect accuracy as the m24 or the later m2010 systems, however, for being a junior sniper or squad designated marksman's rifle, I think the m110 is very good for what it is. The ability to add or remove a suppressor without changing accuracy was unheard of at the time the m110 first came out. Control parody between the m4 and the m110 means that if for whatever reason your normal m110 operator goes down, you can hand the weapon off to anyone and they'll know how to operate the weapon. As to the weight component, I've shot several civilian AR-10s before and what I've noticed is that on a semi-automatic 308 platform lighter is not necessarily better. ( Edit: 308 is by no means a hard recoiling cartridge, but the mass of a weapon does play quite a bit of a role in suppressing and reducing the recoil transferred to the shooter. When the British were looking for their CSASS they actually turned their nose up at the HK 417 because it was too light. They said follow-up shots were delayed because it was too difficult to maintain a good sight picture after firing. The US adopted a version of the HK417 as the new M110A1.) Oh, and there's the adjustable trigger geometry; loved that. Now all that being said I did have some gripes with the m110 system ergonomically. The suppressor does add a fair amount of length to the front of the barrel and more than anything it adds quite a bit of weight to the front of the weapon system in general, which can make it a little unwieldy. My second gripe would be to the buttstock. I understand the military set forth the requirements for this weapon system so it's not really KA's fault that the buttstock sucks ass. While the m110 does technically have an adjustable butt stock, the minimum setting is too long a length of pull for 90% of the people using the weapon. If the length of pull is slightly too long, it's still usable, but it's just not ideal. Problem two why is the a2 style (as in M16A2 styled) buttstock made of thin hollow plastic? Problem 3. Why is the butt plate metal? Did somebody say 'Gosh I sure would love to have a piece of metal repeatedly rammed into my collarbone.' Performing structural modifications to a issued weapon is 100% unauthorized and can get you in serious trouble, but if we're being honest here... I saw more than a few m110s sporting civilian styled precision butt stocks. You know the kind with a cheek riser, maybe a monopod, comfortable rubber butt pad... I think the m110 is a pretty good weapon. However, in the last decade we have seen some improvements in firearms technology and I think the m110 could benefit from some improvements. Such as not putting a frickin metal plate on the back of it.

Which pins did KA replace with set screws? I assume gas block, but I'm an idiot on the internet, so...
@mechwar31
@mechwar31 2 жыл бұрын
@@jupiterjunk no, the gas block is still pinned in place. The gas block is tolerance fitted to the barrel, the barrel is tolerance fitted to the receiver. Because the suppressor attaches to the gas block, it's essential that the gas block be in the exact right position. If anything's wrong with the barrel, gas block, or upper receiver Yee standard armor such as myself isn't qualified or equipped to fix the problem. The entire upper receiver group gets traded in for a new one at the depot level. Which I can see as being a bit of a logistical issue. Having equipment that we cannot fix at the field level is somewhat undesirable. ( Edit for clarification: there is a higher level of armor's course that authorizes for more disassembly of the weapon system. Messing with the gas block or suppressor and things of that nature. However, the barrel extension is not designed to ever be removed from the receiver. It's done that way to ensure the highest possible accuracy.) There are two set screws in the fire control group. They both hold the fire control group components in place and control how they interact with each other. ( Variable trigger geometry) The m4/ AR-15 has a teeny tiny C shaped piece of metal that holds the ejection port cover hinge/ pin in place, that got replaced with a screw. The firing pin retaining pin has a tiny screw in place to retain the retaining pin. So you can still take the firing pin out, but the retaining pin doesn't fall out and get lost. So the firing pin retaining pin instead being a little bent piece of wire now looks like a tiny version of the receiver takedown pins. The bolt catch pivots on a set screw instead of a roll pin. The ambidextrous right hand side control for the bolt catch release is also operated by a set screw rather than a pin.

Somebody needs to point out the difference between a Sniper Support Weapon and a Designated Marksman Weapon. They are not necessarily the same thing. The DM's weapon needs to be as compact and lightweight as possible, while maintaining good precision to 800 meters. The SSW needs superior precision to 800m or more, and can trade some weight and length to achieve that objective.

I got to put a few rounds down range with one of these during OIF. Compared to my M4 it’s night and day, I was by no means the squad designated marksman nor did I attend sniper school and it was just a few mags on the range, that being said it was exponentially lighter than I had anticipated and it was quite simple to put multiple follow up shots in a respectable group at 300 meters. From a soldiers standpoint using AR ergonomics minimizes the time it takes to train up on the new weapons system.

I carried a pre-EBR M14 as a SDM and always liked it. When we got 110s a couple guys still carried M14s (it’s nice to have a choice sometimes). Yet on paper and practically the 110 is a fantastic system, especially being easily adapted for night use (there are many work arounds for the M14 btw). It’s in many ways the superior system. All that being said, when I got out I built an M14 (M1A) SDM rifle and not a M110 clone.

If you're handloading anyway, have you tried Berger Bullets (and others) for a Very Long Range load? 16" is fine for patrol carbine shooting 130-grain out to 300, but you normally lose 100 feet per second per inch of barrel. Hey Cappy! Just wanted to bring some clarifications to the M110 story as well some additions to it (clarifications will be marked C. Some clarifications were made by fellow KZbinr SmallArmsSolutions who worked in the industry at the time): C1. Knights wanted to make improvements to the M110 over the course of its lifespan. The Army however rejected any improvements Knights had to offer at the time and wanted the rifle as it was. C2. When reports started coming back that the M110 was having issues, Knights gave the Army a detailed report of the improvements that could be made to address these issues. The Army rejected these improvements and instead opted to search for a new rifle instead. C3. Knights would give the Army their more compact M110 rifle in the form of the M110K1, which uses a 16.5 inch barrel, an adjustable buttstock, an updated suppressor and all the fixes it needed. However, the Army rejected it in favor of the H&K M110A1 with a similar barrel length but also heavier. However the M110K1 would see use in SOCOM. Now for the additions, and Knights would ultimately get their wish: A1. The H&K M110A1 has been received with 6,000 rifles currently in use, however, they were reconfigured as Squad Designated Marksman Rifles rather than Compact Semi Auto Snipers. A2. In 2021, Knights revealed the M110A2, which uses an M-Lock rail system, adjustable buttstock, as well all the fixes and improvements from lessons learned from the M110 and M110K1 in SOCOM and Army use. It is lighter than the original M110 and H&K M110A1 (as well as shorter than the original), but without sacrificing the 20 inch barrel. A3. Knights, which had an extended contract, to keep supplying the Army the original M110 rifle revised the contract in 2022 for 13 million dollars, to include the M110A2, as it was shown in Army Ranger competitions to be very accurate and reliable. A4. The Navy and Marines, who initially were interested in the Army's H&K M110A1, have since revised their thinking and decided to pursue a product improvement program for their original M110s (which includes a kit Knights sells on their website), as tests have shown better accuracy, range, and lethality compared to H&K's M110A1. A5. SOCOM has pursued a M110A3, which an improvement on the M110K1. This version is modified to have a shorter 14.5 inch barrel and fire 6.5 Creedmoor, and have new fancy tools to add onto the rifle as needed. Hopefully this clarifies and even adds more to the story of the M110. Maybe you could do a video update to the story of the M110? Definitely seems like the Army went to H&K for practically no reason and wasted more money then they needed to.

I think the M110's short life probably comes more from the Army realizing what it wants more than any particular failing of the rifle. If you want a super accurate, long range rifle that's capable of quick follow up shots, it should be heavy and have a long barrel. A slightly modernized M110 would be perfect for that. However, the Army probably doesn't actually need an extreme amount of accuracy out of designated marksman nearly as much as they need them to be able to serve as ordinary riflemen in short range gunfights without too much hassle. There's a certain romance to an extreme range gun, and I love the idea of being able to achieve incredible feats of accuracy. At the same time, my personal high powered rifle has a 16 inch barrel, because I need it to double as a home defense gun, and a 1000 yard tack driver with a 28 inch barrel just isn't good for that.

M27 IAW is not a designated marksman rifle, it is more of a bridge between the M-4A1 and the M249 SAW, but someone in accounting got sh!tty and the SAW somehow got dumped (unless maybe the 7.62 GPMG is going to get issued down to the squad, like the PKM?).

@@davidgoodnow269 Weather it's the wrong decision or not, it had nothing to do with accounting. The Marines decided to replace the SAW with the M27 because of insurgent tactics in the recent wars. The OF would specifically target the automatic riflemen because they were distingued from regular riflemen by having a different weapon whixh gave away the important role they had for the team. By giving automatic riflemen the same weapon as the riflemen, the thinking is that it will be harder for the enemy to tell which Marine is filling which role and make it easier for them to do their jobs.

@@jeffbenton6183 That's a very valid point! Same reason the original Atchisson assault shotgun was designed to look like an M-16 from a distance; enemy always go for anyone with a radio, then officers/anyone in charge, then anyone with an unusual weapon--sometimes swap the latter. The only other option is to break down to four-man teams, with each team having a couple of F-U weapons (repeating grenade launchers, Barrett, missile launcher, LMG--just make the entire platoon a pile of bad looking for somewhere to land).

I was issued my M110 in the summer of 2008 as part of my units train up for a 2009-2010 Iraq deployment. While I was initially skeptical being trained since 1992 on the M24 (I had an 8 year break in service). My skepticism evaporated within an hour of range time. Sub 1/2 MOA groupings were not only easier with the M110, they became the norm. The only issue I ever had with that rifle was that the suppressor could unlock, leading to a minor baffle strike (I was lucky). We trained a lot with our M110's and M24's (we did not turn them in prior to deployment) running ranges just about every month from Aug 2008 until our deployment (even did a High Power Rifle Match in Eastern Washington) in June 2009. We also conducted over 20 different ranges while in country, including Aerial Platform Shooting (that was cool AF and at least as difficult as you think it is). The published capability of the M110 was indeed 800 meters. That became a pretty easy 1st round hit with the M110 and shots at 1000 - 1100 meters were now realistic thanks to the superior accuracy and much improved Leupold Mk 4 LRT optic. One of the drawbacks with the M110 was that it isn't as easy to get comfortable behind it, which can affect stability and accuracy. If you can manage that aspect effectively, it was an outstanding long range platform.

I got the original. The Armalite AR-10-T, with B-type magazine and build. The M-110 uses the A-type magazine and build. The A-type magazine is a proprietary made magazine that is larger than the B-type. The B-type is derived from the well known M-14 magazine. The front hole and the rear back plate were removed and a left side mag locking hole and a rear channel for the bolt catch was incorporated in the AR-10 B-type magazine. A factory installed Lothar-Walther match 24" barrel, made from LD-50 stainless steel is on the gun. With target crown muzzle. These precision gas guns are insanely accurate.

Reliability making and breaking guns, definitely a consistent occurrence. If it were as reliable as a bolt action it would likely have been a permanent replacement I'd say. A weapon that always shoots is typically preferable to a weapon that shoots better but not reliably. Makes me want to design and make guns to be honest, not that I know in the slightest everything I'd have to know in order to make a gun, but I think I have a really good idea about what it takes for a gun to be a "good gun", just like everybody else anyways lol, only I'm right, just like everybody else hah.

I was was in ssp when this rifle first came out in the marine corps and got the first ones with the premier scope. Reliability was decent but it’s a gas gun and prone in the dirt over long courses of fire feeding issues might occur but nothing big. Accuracy was decent as well relative to the m40 series. I think the weight and length wasn’t a huge negative in a static position but patrolling with it or having to do more dynamic things like break contact etc. is challenging. I agree over all with the making it shorter and lighter even if you loose a little in the accuracy/velocity department. Where things can improve outside of the gun is always better ammo and more usable scopes/ reticles. Over I liked it. It’s hard to make one gun do it all.

One of the problems with the M110 is that even though Maintainers are allowed to order and replace virtually everything on the rifle, the trigger group is basically the only part that they are not allowed to mess with. Basically, knight armament thinks so highly of themselves that they are the only ones allowed to mess with the trigger, even though its exactly like the trigger in any typical AR rifle, except slightly more sensitive So basically after years of snipers yeeting talibans in afghaniland, the triggers are wearing out and becoming unserviceable, and its on that units supply to send it back to Knights Armament, and the units seriously stuggle to work out the process for that, and it leaves them down a sniper rifle. So basically when the trigger goes out of spec, its doomed.
@EtherFox
@EtherFox 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a complete load of BS. AR pattern triggers are a 5 minute job for an experienced armorer. There is no chance grunt units wouldn't just swap in a suitable substitute then swap the bad ones in when they can afford to (back Stateside). There are several other components known to wear out on the M110 - Having those wear out at unpredictable rates would make the weapon as a system difficult to have high faith in, given its role.

Awesome rifle; the FN SCAR-H serves the same purpose though and might even be a bit lighter. I've heard certain Naval Special Warfare personnel complain about the accuracy, which should be sub MOA. If you are having that problem, remember to torque the six barrel screws to the correct tightness in INCH POUNDS, not foot pounds. That should solve 99% of accuracy problems. My question is though, if the SCAR-H is already in US service, is sub MOA accurate with good ammo, and is available, why are they procuring new rifles like these if the SCAR-H will already do the job? Oh, it also is short stroke piston driven, which makes it run far better with a suppressor. IDK, just seems like a far better choice if you already have it and come to think of it, I just think it's a far better choice period. IIRC, the French Army is also using the SCAR-H now too. Also, according to the figures Kappy gives here, the Army is going to pay $12,222.22 USD each for the 9lb improved M-110 (still heavier than SCAR-H); that's ridiculous. The SCAR-H is no more that $3,000.00 USD and the SCAR-20 is $4,200.00 USD. I never thought I'd be saying "The SCAR is far more economical" but there it is. SCAR is now available in 6.5 Creedmore also and now you can get them with non reciprocating handles too. IDK, just seems better in every metric. Oh, and it's FDE version has several shades of flat dark earth on it too, so it should satisfy the Kappy color quota.

A popular story goes: Mr. Stoner's Win. .308 (7.62mm) chambered AR-10 self disassembled during the demonstration for Pentagon brass (Bakelite parts broke). Gen. Le May of the Air Force later asked if it could be re-chambered for a small, high speed round. The AR-15 was chambered 5.56 mm (a tiny bit larger and somewhat mare power than the .223) with a somewhat slow 1 in 9 inch twist. It worked great for base security. The recoil absorbing system used to tame the 7.62 nearly eliminated the recoil of the 5.56 making it an excellent home defense and hunting platform.

Re: "A popular story goes: Mr. Stoner's Win. .308 (7.62mm) chambered AR-10 self disassembled during the demonstration for Pentagon brass (Bakelite parts broke). Gen. Le May of the Air Force later asked if it could be re-chambered for a small, high speed round." The AR10 took part in the mid-1950s army ordnance trials for a new weapon chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO/.308, and impressed a lot of personnel with its light weight, advanced features, materials and layout, and ease of use. It was also accurate and even pretty controllable in full-auto operation. However, fate intervened and when an experimental composite steel-aluminum barrel failed catastrophically during torture testing on one of the rifles, the AR10 was dropped from the next round of the trials. Chief engineer Eugene Stoner had objected strenuously to the prototype composite barrel rifle being included in the batch of test rifles sent to the trials, but was overruled by Armalite President George Sullivan. Later on, Armalite was successful in licensing the rights to produce the AR10 to the Dutch firm of Artillerie Inrichtingen, which made them for sale to the nations of Sudan, Indonesia, and Portugal. The elite Portuguese paratroops used A.I. produced AR10s during the 1960s and early 1970s in the numerous bush wars in Africa, and reportedly preferred them over anything else, including the H&K G3 and FN FAL. A real-life example of "what if" history and a road not taken in terms of U.S. small-arms development. Some FA historians have lamented the fact that the FAL wasn't chosen as the U.S. service rifle over the M-14, but the real missed opportunity and game-changer would have been the original AR10. It was generations ahead of anything else at that time.

@@theimmortal4718 thank you for that. I've been too lazy to request the data sheet. It's why I like these vids. I get a basic rundown before I even look at that weapon.

I've shot one of them at OCTC. It's a lot of fun and would make a great hunting rifle

The way I heard it was that the action of the bolt flying back to chamber another round on a semi auto sniper rifle jars the barrel enough to make it miss, but if they're getting hits out to 800 meters more power to them.
