At uni, while taking a Black History course, I read The book on the Tuskegee experiments. Doctors conducting the study told the syphilitic black men that they were giving them a new experimental drug, but it was a placebo. Yes, it was racial targeting (14:55), but it was also gender targeting; all in the study were adult black males; woman get syphilis too, so clearly if you're aiming for your science to be accurate and robust, half of the test subjects should have been woman. Payment promised to these black men was a free coffin. Other than that, good job, Dank. I have no other corrections. Early estimates on jab compliance showed that 25% of American blacks got jabbed. I think many were just late, as more recent numbers show an over 50% compliance rate.

I spent a good amount of time in Tuskegee. A few things of note: -Tuskegee was founded by a former slave who wanted to build bridges with the whites in the south and worked hard to build a good faith society. -He was derided as someone foolish for trusting the southerners and the government, though he used their help to benefit as many people as possible. - Once he passed, similar people who wanted to help him used thier connections to him to build facilities in his school once he died. -The facilities for the Tuskegee experiment were still on campus, but in the basements of some dorms in the mid 2000s. -The Tuskegee experiment killed a number of people and removed alot of the power in building up the city of Tuskegee. It is still poor till this day due to the government effectively killing its motivated citizens for science for a few generations. -Bush came to visit around the mid 2000s and gave money to help fix the city, but the generational stab in the back by the government cannot be fixed by donating to thier bioethics center. -I must repeat, the government betrayed the good will of Tuskegees founder in order to get data on a preventable disease till around Nixon, which is absurd

Government is hard to improve on one's own outside voting. I try to improve my own life an that of those I care for. It's difficult to know people are so fooled so often by government. Although our culture doesn't have to be tossed aside after finding out government can be untrustworthy.
@JohntheFancy
@JohntheFancy Ай бұрын
When you said it is still poor to this day that was an understatement. I grew up around Tuskegee. There are entire rows of houses heading into that town that are just swallowed by kudzu. Those houses were occupied by residents when I was a small child. I've heard people call it the 2nd white flight, but those people also weren't from Tuskegee. Everyone has been leaving that place. Not just whites, not just blacks. I personally prefer living in or around Tuskegee, because the people are much more tolerable to me, and because the Tuskegee National Forest is there. However there's not much in Macon county or Tuskegee. We always kind of joked that Tuskegee is the place Alabama would rather forget. Which is sad. Tuskegee really does have some of the best and the worst of our state's history. The airmen and the experiments are a perfect example of that best and worst.

An interesting side-note: right when Americans started muttering the phrase, "Tuskegee experiments?" in the 90s, before anyone had internet, HBO showed up with their movie The Tuskegee Airmen, which basically assured us that the experiments were all about testing black pilots in war, and there was nothing to see here. Took another 15 years before the real story met our attention span. Never trust HBO, they're part of, let's just call it 'the big weapon'. The movie uses every item on the list of cheap ways to reach past people's guard and into their emotions, so it can tell them a big lie and it won't even occur to them it's a lie because they're dealing with 2 tons of emotions. Worked like a charm. Even brought in the classic, "show a picture of the real guys at the end" one.

Americans were bawling and saying "I know all about the Tuskegee experiments now and I need not ask any questions because I'm carrying all this emotion" at the end, because right when they asked "Tuskegee experiments?" HBO popped that movie onto their tubes. Anyone else having trouble understanding basic propaganda techniques, please inquire elsewhere :)

Had a personal run in with those corporations. Grandma was getting a Alzheimer's treatment that was being studied by a university professor, which actually did an amazing job at improving her cognitive abilities and slowing her decline. Problem is that the doctor was reusing a generic drug that was used to treat arthritis, and the pharmaceutical companies had a new expensive drug in the works that they could make far more money off. It was amazing how many personal threats the patients in the trials would get, and paid trolls on the online message boards were spamming pure fiction about the dangers of the treatment.

Teenager me had to look this up on Wikipedia after watching Half Baked in the mid-2000s.... I can never again disassociate these two things from each other, and every time the Tuskegee Experiments get mentioned I impulsively snort with laughter as I picture Dave Chapelle scoring medical weed off a confused-looking doctor. It can be kinda awkward.

Still waiting on a video about Albert Johnson. He led the Canadian feds and their Native guides on a month-long manhunt across the Arctic, over mountains, through forests, and across frozen rivers. He injured one Mountie and killed another before eventually being killed himself. His manhunt was one of the first to use a plane (flown by WW1 veteran Wop May) to track him down, and was one of the first “viral” news stories in the age of radio during the Great Depression. To this day, no one knows his true identity, despite many theories and genetic evidence being used to investigate. So for now, he is best known as the Mad Trapper of Rat River.
