SORRY FOR MY MISTAKE (I BLAME IMDB FR FOR THAT) : THIS EPISODE WAS OUT IN DECEMBER 1959
MY PATREON (EXTENDED REACTION VIDEO, ONE VIDEO OF ADVANCE, NO ADDS) : / laurareactions
Hello !
I watched three episodes on that day. The first one was playing with syfy subjects, the second one was denouncing society subjects, and now, this one… is not interesting for the messages but really for how it was made and written. To have writers who imagined a story like that, playing so much with the viewers' minds, it seems insane : the main character, we want to trust him, but his friend really disappeared, no one knows him, so it's a trap, or it's an imaginary friend, or an alien solution, or…
The end is not important, in fact, the answer. Because what was interesting was to have doubts about what happened here, to try to imagine all possibilities, and for the writers to play with it. With the newspapers and obvious stuff like that, but also with some stuff like people paying attention to one character and not the other one, the viewers who remember scenes but imagine they didn't understand them well… SO COOL.
I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

This episode scared the hell out of me, and it still does. One of my biggest fears is the fact that people I care about may just not exist one day, if I turn around... or even worse that the same could happen to me.

Everything works to create an unsettling feeling of paranoia and fear. Taylor's acting is superb, Heyes' direction and Rosenman's spooky music. Hutton's bone-chilling, " Oh, my dear God! " Perfect.

Oh shit this is my favorite episode!! I've never seen anything else capture that feeling so well, genuinely feeling each person disappearing from reality, being erased. So good.

This was one of many Twilight Zone episodes based on the stories of Richard Matheson. A prolific writer, his material has been used many times for movies and tv episodes. A couple of my favourite novels of his are I am Legend (1954) which was made into 3 movies over the years; The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971), I am Legend (2007). Also Bid Time Return (1975) which was made into a personal favourite movie of mine, Somewhere in Time (1980).

The generation that wrote, acted in and produced these TV programmes had fought in or witnessed the Second World War and the Korean War. Vietnam hadn't happened yet, but would happen soon. This show is dressing up in Science-Fiction clothing the very real question all those who came back alive had to face. 'Why did YOU come back and not my husband, brother, father?' People who have returned cannot talk about their experiences, cannot talk about fear, or loneliness or other people's lack of understanding. There is a Philip K Dick story called 'something for us tempunauts' that covers this (he understood, being an outsider himself). There is also a story called 'What's it Really Like out There?' about how an astronaut cannot answer that question, and how it creates a permanent, unbreakable wall between them and other people. It's the same for soldiers. An entire generation, like my parents, had to find a way forward with this weight on their shoulders, listening to people saying 'war keeps the excess population down, doesn't it?'

Sometimes the Twilight Zone will have pragmatic explanations and THAT'S the dark twist, like EVERYONE in on confusing one character (which is equally as terrifying as something supernatural), but no it's usually a sci-fi/supernatural explanation. That's why it's called the Twilight Zone, like the infinite cosmic realm of possibilities all happening at once, but separately. Kind of a high concept. Always so weird when Europeans have a hard time grasping it since most American sci-fi/supernatural media is largely based off A LOT of European (ALL over European, even Eastern Asian countries like China/Japan/Korea) folklore/urban legends/mythology/fairytales/fables etc. America is one of, if not, THE youngest nation on this planet. We got out ideas from SOMEWHERE, it's mostly Europe.

For some reason, this episode reminds me of the short story "From Beyond" by HP Lovecraft

You made a statement that could apply to many reactors: "I should have paid more attention", when you became confused or felt you'd missed something. I can guarantee that you did, because like a number of reactors, you're constantly talking over the scenes and dialogue - missing important elements, then later saying, "wait, what's happening?", etc. So much of what you're asking will be answered in the course of the show/movie; so many comments can be saved for afterward. It's much more enjoyable for the viewer that way, too. Just a suggestion.

Yes. I like watching reactors videos but so many talk over the scenes. Some do it right by pausing when they comment.

So many possibilities from this episode. Thats why its not high on my list. It does have great acting though. Have you ever felt out of place? Thats the vibe from this episode, like they violated some natural boundary in thier flight, and have now glitched out of our reality. My favorite idea is that that they encountered a 6th dimension, and once there our universe removed them our memories and all traced of them are removed.... sort of like long division, wrapping up remainders.
