There's one simple element that Double Zeta outperformed the rest of S teirs, and that's being absolutely fashion icons. For a buncha blue collar worrking class, Judau and his gangs got drips, and the Axis just embracing the roaring 80s fashion sense like it's never going outta style, because it isn't. How they accomplished that feats while being literal space boonies is beyond me, yet more power to them.

I agree the original Gundams sheer impact and influence on not just anime but fiction as a whole is criminally underrated. This is a show that has inspired more media then the Big 3 shonen combined. It should be discussed alongside other anime that are highly regarded like FMA, hunter x hunter, berserk, Eva,akira, texnolyze etc but it just isn't in the states its just seen as another mecha Also im glad im not the only one that likes the space part of 83 more then the ground stuff in the beginning

Personally I think ZZ is a solid A tier. It gets way too much hate and I think most haters haven't even seen it or at least much of the show, but I wouldn't quite put it at top tier either. A is a very good spot for it

If I can make a defense for the Build series. Build Fighters especially feels more like a celebration for the franchise and filled with lots of love for Gundam as a whole. Try is way more of a departure for a Gundam series, but still has love for the series. Divers also falls in line with Try. However Divers ReRise ties back to the emotional drama that is Gundam and I personally feel it deserves more love. Unfortunately you do need to sit through the other build series mentioned for it to make sense. As for Beginning G and Breaker they are stand alone stuff more towards people who play the Gundam Breaker games. If anything I recommend BuildFighters at the very least. Also side note the way the build series fights reminds me of the Gundam VS games.

About David Hayter and 0080. He was at my local gaming convention a few years back and I waited in line for about an hour to have him sign my copies of Metal Gear Solid and 0080, but during the wait I figured I didn't want to spend $80 to have them both signed, so I just had him sign War in the Pocket. I figured that a copy of MGS 1 signed by Solid Snake isn't anything that special. But a copy of 0080 signed by Bernie? I'd rather have that. There was a long line, but we had a brief talk about it for maybe a minute, and he was really happy to see that someone brought that for him to sign, and he told the woman sitting next to him - his manager or whatever - and asked her if she'd seen it, and said that it was "the saddest anime ever." That was a pretty cool moment for me as a Gundam fan, and that DVD is one of the main pieces in my DVD library and Gundam collection because of that. I intend to get it on Blu Ray because the animation is gorgeous and I want to see it in the highest quality possible, but I'm keeping that DVD forever. I really ought to frame it and hang it on my wall or something.

I honestly did not think I would like the Build series as it really is just a way for Bandai to peddle Gunpla model kits on people, and it is that. However, the original Build Fighter and Build Fighter Try I really liked. They are simply shows made as a celebration for the Gundam fandom and it does that right. No convoluted plot or colony being dropped required, just love for the fans. The thing I wish Bandai did was a direct sequel to Sei Iori's rise in the Build Fighter series from initially lacking confidence to becoming a world class fighter would be really fun. Plus seeing how other characters like Mao, Felini, and Reiji grow as fighters as well in a world tournament would be amazing. And would be great to see the rivalries of Sei vs. Tatsuya, Kijima Wilfrid vs. Sekai, Yuuma vs. Minato or Adou (Yuuma vs. Adou had the most "Gundam" style ending). Fumina's rise in the women's ranks against Shia and Kaoruko in her attempt to become the best. Such good matchups. There is even a Ramba Ral character in the show, telling you fandom done right. Plus in my heart, the reveal of the Star Build Strike from Build Gundam will always be amazing and I swear Kira Yamato would not have needed Freedom if he had the Star Build Strike. The reveal of the Tryon 3 in Build Fighters is absolutely hilarious because you are either one of two types of people watching it and the show captures both types so well.

Build Divers also has some surprising bits with it...and with Re:Rize, that series had a great mix of characters and having a group of idiots slowly develop into an actual, functioning team...and the combining gundams for the abomination that is the ReRizing Gundam that even in universe is something that everyone views as deranged. It actually managed to create a character who can compete with G-Gundam characters for largest ham in a Gundam series with Captain Zeon. And the entire part of realizing that they're part of the reason why there's now a nearly omnicidal AI who now has gundams...

Gundam Age is similar to the Build series as it was created for a younger audience, I would try them if you enjoy Age well enough. I liked them as they are but not seriously, they do have some fun designed kits and such. Also never seen Turn A? what is wrong with you?!

No Gundam AGE is not created for a younger audience, its the reason why it failed so badly. It marketed itself as a gundam suitable for younger audience yet have so many people dying left and right and the main character became an insane tyrant that wants to genocide the alien race at the last act

08th MS team is only praised super highly by a lot of the American fans since A: Toonami aired it, and B: westerners like more realistic, slower, weighty mechs like in Mechwarrior more then Japan does where fast and agile bots are what we see in a lot of mecha anime and are preferred while 08th MS team is all about that realism aspect.

I can understand your point of the build series and why it wouldn’t press the right buttons for you. As someone who has watched the build series, except for gunpla beginner g here’s what I can say for each build series to give a good explanation as to why I or others may enjoy it or utterly hate it. Gundam build fighters- it’s A arguably S tier. This is a series that gives love and respect to those that build gundam model kits and have that dream of being able to pilot their built kit or personal creations into battle. I’d say it’s less like pokemon and more so say medabots minus an evil organization that wants control…..to some extent. There’s a solid dynamic of the two main characters, a kid builder with a full encyclopedia of gundam in his brain but is not a solid fighter with a guy that is admittedly from another world that has no idea whatsoever about what gundam is but is a strong fighter and gets a solid rivalry with this guy that just gets a rush from finding a good opponent in gunpla battle, his most quotable line is even rage on gunpla. But what really seals the deal for me on this is that it does get what hobbyist feel at times with a certain quote that Mr. Ral said, and yes there’s a Mr. Ral and it is Ramba Ral himself, gunpla is something that’s not serious but that’s why we take it seriously. This resonates with me as I’ve built at least 100+ kits of high grades master grades and real grades and that while it’s a hobby it’s something that has a feel to it at times where we take it seriously, especially the effort we put into on customizing kits whether through kitbashes, paints, or making a complete scratch build, and get dreams of being able to pilot and fight with them. Again I can get why it’s not your cup of tea but at least build fighters I’d say at least try, if you can’t get into it it’s cool. So the other series I won’t be as heavily detailed in cause build fighters is just…..that series for me, but I’ll still try to give reasons to some extent. Build fighters try- C - it doesn’t hit the same way as the original series and the character writing doesn’t feel as impactful to some extent, series also tries to add suspense or drama and it’s just not that good. That said it’s more of just as you said a cheeseburger series, nothing complex but it’s still something to sit and enjoy to some extent, especially the gunpla in try are honestly phenomenal, I’d be lying if I said they weren’t eye catching. Build divers- F - it’s basically gundam mixed with SAO and it gets real painful to sit through in the second half, even if it has some really REALLY cool looking builds. The main character is bland generic uninteresting and halfway into the series turns into a combination of Kira’s whiny preaching and shinns stupidity. Yeah, THAT BAD. Build divers Re:rise- B arguably A - this series was something I was expecting to flop because it was a sequel to build divers, but I am so glad I was wrong. This actually does a good job of taking a couple of random people and turning them into a team and the progression is shockingly pretty good and does give some depth to the characters, and their respective gunpla builds arguably has the strongest identities not just in appearance but in their respective functions and it’s just surprising on how good they made this, this is honestly a recommended but again I understand if you can’t into it. Build metaverse- F - it’s just advertisement to push for the metaverse Bandai is working on and the writing and fights is very uninteresting in this series. It’s just not worth it. And that’s my two cents about it. Also I’ll say this gundam the origin series- F - it’s an over the top soap opera that really unnecessarily wanks it to char and the animation style comes off bad, not the mech cgi that I think is actually good, but the way the characters are drawn particularly their mouths look wrong and when they emote it’s either shit pants or orgasmic climax and it just looks so stupid.

I liked G-witch, until I watched Adolescence of Utena. Then I realized that Suletta and Miorine's relationship was strangely sexless, especially for one in a Gundam anime; it felt like they wanted a plausibly deniable lesbian romance, maybe for broadcast television reasons or something. And that the fights were oddly hard to read, in comparison with any Gundam anime I watched from before IBO. And that the Permet Score system does not work well as a way of establishing tension, because the known consequences before the final episode are either death, or nothing. Anyway, I really liked Gundam X, and would put it in A tier, and I didn't like Gundam ZZ, and would put it in D tier. It felt really inconsistent in quality to me, and Ple/Puru weirded me out. I'm not mad about young characters in anime being sexualized, but I don't have to like it, and it feels out of place in a Gundam anime to me. I'd also rate Zeta Gundam below Original Gundam, I felt like Zeta got a bit too ambitious for the medium in 1987, and would have worked better as an obscenely big OVA like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, or even just an anime from a decade or 2 later. Although part of that is probably bad translation.
