This one aged honestly better than I remember. It's a simple 3D action game that strikes me as bit repetitious, but it was short and sweet, and the translation of 3D for whip combat was much better realized here than Castlevania 64 for sure. I also appreciate NOT feeling like I have to hunt and grind weapons and xp like many of the IGA titles. Still, please enjoy another Castlevania installment, and from here I intend to add them in timeline chronological order (so next would be Curse of Darkness). The next RECAPitation will be: Xenosaga Episode II

I actually really like this origin story for Dracula. Not only is he originally just a grieving man who just happened to have significant power, but he was specifically blaming his God for taking his love from him. He didn’t blame humanity for such a thing until after the death of his second wife more than 300 years later, when Lisa was burned at the stake under false accusations of witchcraft. This story is about two powerful men mourning, but are diverging parallels in how they choose who wield their power while mourning.

Low key though, the PS2 Castlevania titles caught a lot of flack from reviewers of the time, but they're both pretty darn fantastic. Having gone back to them recently, they're actually better than I remembered.

I don't remember anyone actually reveiwing them poorly at all. In fact most reviews at the time priased it for "Finally being a good 3D Castlevania" after the misteps of the N64 games.

30 minutes, and two RECAPitations watched. This is one of my favourite Castlevania titles, and I've been excited for it ever since you said you were working on it in the stream. I also didn't realise I had an intense need for dangerous depths of deadly dungeons on demented disks until I watched this one. Thanks again, Black Mage, and keep at this labor of love. The legendary Vampire Killer's origin, as well as Dracula's hatred toward the Catholic Church, are brought into light in this short-lived but wonderful tale. I do wish the name Dracula was brought into play in a more organic fashion than just in the epilogue, but this is still a solid game even if you removed all plot and story elements and just focused on the gameplay. Thanks very much for this RECAP, and I'll meet you on the next battlefield.

Well, Dracula/Mathias never hated the church at this point in time. He hated God which is completely different. His hatred for the church started after Lisa’s crucifixion sometime in the 1470s. But at the same time, Lisa’s crucifixion wasn’t just the churches fault, her death was a product of Carmilla starting the witch trials so that she could kill off the Belnades clan since they were causing her problems. She mostly succeeded in killing off the Belnades clan but Sypha was able to be taken in by the Eastern Orthodox Church and worked for them as a monster hunter to uphold her end for amnesty from the trials.

I never got the hate for this game. It definitely wasn't groundbreaking 3D action considering that you had games like Devil May Cry and Shinobi for that, but not everything has to be. I liked its relaxed pace with some gauntlets here and there (which never really got frustrating), and simple bosses with death being a decent challenge. I found the difficulty to be not far from games like SotN. To be honest, the incredible music was enough for me with the inoffensive game mechanics. The game didn't overstay its welcome and you even got a secret character. If the whip combat were a little more varied, I'd say it was a great. As is, it was good enough.

quick question. will there be any recapitation videos for the dragon quest series, the xenoblade chronicles series and white knight chronicles 1 & 2? i was wondering about this because of the hero from dragon quest 11 joining super smash bros ultimate as a dlc newcomer and thats why im asking
The only issue i would see about wkc is that dogma wars was a japan only release of i remeber which is supposed to be a prequal/bridge for 1&2.

@@coby4482I know this is an old comment, but the upgrade for the Whip of Alchemy required the soul of a willing vampire, by the time Rinaldo found his daughter she was already fully turned, hence why she killed Ronaldo’s family before running off. As opposed to Sara who was in the beginning stages of the change since Walter had just bitten her before returning her to Leon.
