The Ultimate Ultralight Baitcasting Reel: No Thumb Needed with the Daiwa Salamandura Air TW with the Roro Spool TX25S! The jig was 1/16th oz and with the soft plastic together, it totals about 2.7 grams!
This is a great way for anglers who are new to baitcasting and want to practice casting. Eventually, the brakes can be reduced as one learns how to use their thumb for the initial cast as well for when they need to stop the spool at the end of the cast!
Want to learn how to setup your BFS Reel this way? Watch this video in how I tune my reels:

Right? Using a bait caster and saying not to use your thumb is not the way to teach someone.. you should always me gliding the line over your thumb no matter the break setting to get used to it. I’m all for high breaks for beginners.. but you gotta start learning how to use a bait caster or just stick to a spinning rod.

thx! there's so many ways to configure reels. I find this a very practical way for beginners to setup and use. I also think that hand retrieve reels simply tells you which side the handle is on and it's not made specifically for left or right handers. For example here, left hand retrieve reel being used by me as a right hand dominate person only make sense as I want to use my more dexterous arm to cast and impart motion. i can use my left hand to reel in.

Spinning reels cast lighter stuff better. I've got an Abu Garcia that has a trigger to open the bail and I don't have to use two hands to cast. I use it primarily for trout and crappie, I'd rather use a bait caster for larger fish and trolling.

This is just my opinion and to be clear I love my casting rods/reels that I have mainly for bass fishing. I have ultimate control and if you fish a lot your accuracy gets pretty deadly. But when I am finesse fishing with anything less than a 1/4 oz and sometimes 3/8 I am just more comfortable with a spinning rod. Maybe it's the feel of it beat into me over the years or confidence. I just think if you had two fisherman side by side target fishing and making long casts all with an 1/8 oz bait I bet the spinning rod will cast to more targets and will cast much much further on average

There's a little science behind it. You got to play and mess with everything and really dail it in for what you're throwing. Everything needs to compliment each other. Rod, line, reel, thumb, form, all of it to maximize efficiency. Take alot of time on the water and casts to get the most out of you gear. This is a good way to start and gain confidence, and that alone is more than half of any fishing secret to catch more fish.

I would not compare the outcome as this method is not for achieving casting distance, but to allow beginners to learn how to cast and gain confidence in using the style of reel. I just oiled my baitcaster for the first time and I had it about 2 weeks, when I got done oiling it, it started acting wierd and tried casting right away after oiling it and it would backlash a lot more. I put the tension knob as tight as possible and It couldn’t hold a 1/4oz jig head with a creature bait in place. I turned the knob up all the way that press down the spool release and it would drop fast. Do you know why
@rawrfishing
@rawrfishing 4 ай бұрын
The oil likely was a lower viscosity of the stock lube. The bearings spinning easier makes the spool spin faster and even faster start up. Turn up the brakes and or cast softer. You will find this be the case too if you were to swap your stock bearings to higher end bearings. Imagine that!

That's a tricky one... You will need not only to press the thumb bar, but also hold the spool down with your thumb. You also need to Feather the spool while the lure is in flight and lastly stop the spool before it hits the water. I am not sure if I can help. Sorry 🙏

@@rawrfishinghey , thanks for the answer . However im a bit confused now because in the video you showed how to set up the reel so u didnt need to stop the line while the cast and right before the lure hits the water . So i thought and hoped i only have to press the thumb button right before the cast to give the reel to freely cast the line . So am i missing something or what? 😅 When i take all the beginning settings and press the brake lever to make a cast . Do i still need to hold / press down on the drum/line for the few seconds until i actually make the cast ? Or is it completely without thumb and i just press the brake lever right before i cast ? An explanation would be highly appreciated ! Sincerely Daniel

The setting I have shown are for beginners and the draw back, as many have stated in the comments, is that you will not get good distance. One must train their thumb in order to master the reel for distance and accuracy. Even as portrayed, I still have held the spool with my thumb as I was casting. No thumb mean I did not Feather or stop the spool as the lure flies in the air. I don't cast nor know If the way u describe would ever work as pressing a button actually takes a lot of movement before the reel disengage a spool. You may even damage the reel by doing the way you have described.
