Hi Keejay, I'm actually going to dispute the last part of what you've said here. You can actually find message boards in the early days of the internet where people talk about Illmatic for the first time and are blown away. You may not have been around then (and I wasn't listening to rap then) but people in my circle tell me that you had to be around to hear the hype that Nas generated from his feature on the Main Source's "Live at the BBQ".

Reasonable Doubt is not unsung. It's one of the greatest rap albums (top 10 - 20) of all time. It only suffers from anti ny bias. The arguments you'll here are only NY people were listening to it and If Biggie and Pac didn't die there would be no Jay Z. Those people fail to realize, it was an independent record, they only put 50 thousand copies in the store the first week. So it was hard to get outside of his primary core market. But once "Ain't No Ninja" it ignited the streets. The album sold 43k units the first week, after a year it almost was gold. After 4 more years it was platinum. Remember this was the CD's in store era. So people continued to actually buy the album for years once the discovered it.
