Feargal Sharkey, as a keen angler, spends a lot of time nowadays campaigning for cleaner rivers in the UK. True story. The Undertones were such a great band.

Love that for him!

Sharkey also went on to have a UK solo no.1 with A Good Heart in 1985.

This is great, I’m from Northern Ireland and love them. They always had humor in their music. Check out their video for their song “My perfect cousin” - fantastic.

Agreed on the suggestion for "My Perfect Cousin" which has some incredible lyrics too.

R.I.P John Peel.. I have almost every 'Peel Session' ever done on disc.... Plus a lot of full shows and 'Festive 50' Shows.

Further to the John Peel connection - as if having the opening lines - "Teenage dreams so hard to beat" - on his Gravestone wasn't enough - legend has it he kept a box of what he considered 'important '45" singles close to the door of his home in case of fire so he could grab it as he got his family out. It contained two copies of 'Teenage Kicks'. Even after all these years the opening riff puts the hairs up all over my body - & if it comes on the juke box in a Pub towards the end of the night nearly everyone will sing along. Hard to think of a more perfect slice of Rock n Roll.

2 of the members of the Undertones (The O Neil brothers) went on to form a band called That Petrol Emotion with an American singer in the 80s and they were brilliant. Worth checking out.

Great review and very happy you liked it, around 78-81 I was loving the Undertones, they do come across as poppy. but I reckon they are just very hooky, a great band and Feargal had some good solo stuff as well... Songs to consider for future reactions are :- You've Got My Number, Get Over You, Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer, Girls Don't Like It, My Perfect Cousin, Wednesday Week, Julie Ocean, When Saturday Comes, Mars Bars

You are right they never looked like rock stars and never really projected that. The songs are often very teenage in their outlook at first. Their song. Other great songs are You’ve Got My Number, Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes the Summer, Wednesday Week, When Saturday Comes, My Perfect Cousin, Family Entertainment, Mars Bars - the list goes on

I heard John Peel said that when he first this he was on a coach (or maybe a bus) and he got off and cried! Jimmy Jimmy also worth checking out.

It often used to be pointed out, including if I remember correctly by John Peel himself, than on the cover of their first album the members of the band are shown sat on a wall in their home town in Belfast, but that their trousers seem a bit short and their clothes a bit tight: they were still kids still outgrowing their clothes! In the documentary Teenage Kicks" the band members returned with Peel to visit that wall.

I grew up listening to The Undertones. My elder sibling went to see them and didn't stop raving about them for a couple of weeks. Undertones have an album called 'All Wrapped Up' where the female cover girl was wearing a a tight dress made from meat. Lady Gaga stole the idea and the rest is history. Loved your enthusiasm for The Undertones. 👍🐶

So that's where Lady Gaga got the idea! Glad my enthusiasm got across because I really loved this song, it's still in my head ffs

I [bleeping] love it when punk bands do straight up pop songs! Odd, weird pop songs, but a pop song. This could be a Split Enz song and no one would notice.

In the late 70s in the UK, labels like Hardcore, pop-punk, street punk and anarcho-punk hadn't yet been invented. Everything from the Sex Pistols to The Stranglers to Buzzcocks to X Ray Spex was simply considered as punk. It was a very broad term and the movement had a lot of musical variety, which it lost as it splintered into sub-genres with codified looks and sounds.

The songs chorus was really about masturbation and it used to be, "I Wanna hold it wanna hold it tight" but they had to change it to 'her' in order to get radio play. And Feargal really does talk like he sings. 😊

It always amazes me how talented some musicians are at such a young age. I think about how some artists die in their 20s and leave behind huge legacies. I'm 25 and I haven't done shit!
