I started my training with my pup by using “me centered” activities, and after months of working with him he became incapable of approaching life without me involved in it. We took him to a PHD behavior scientist and she asked me if he was trained and what I did with him, and she asked me to STOP doing the “column A” type activities because he was not an independent dog, had very little self confidence and I was so much of a primary fixture in his life that he couldn’t cope without me. Over the last two years, I’d accidentally reinforced dependent behavior from him. He had no chill skills, no independent thinking. Doing enrichment activities that were out of my control and didn’t “bond” with me, has really helped him.

I agree dogs need human interaction and leadership. However, for those of us who live in the real world with full time jobs, kids, school activities, etc, it is unrealistic to not ever have a break from your dog. I train my dog multiple times per day but also use a snuffle mat to feed him the rest of his food. I also use Kongs and other items to keep him busy when I am in a work meeting and he is crated. Furthermore, he goes to doggy daycare 1 to 2 times per week to allow me to be more productive in my work from home job. I feel I have a great bond with my dog and nobody who lives in the real world could ever give constant attention to their dog unless the person had nothing else going on in their lives but their dog!

That’s great to hear, Anna! This is SUCH an important comment. Remember, it’s all about the behavior that you’re seeing. If your dog is listening well, and seems to be making good choices, then those “enrichment choices” from column B are a great option! Dog training is less about what’s right and wrong. But it’s about what’s BEST for the dog that you have. And knowing when to make changes in the information you give them based on their behavior! Full time attention on your dog is an unreasonable goal for anyone. That’s why the interaction we have with them needs to be focused on quality time. Thanks for watching!

Great comment Anna. Couldn’t agree more! Although I understand her reasoning and the message they are trying to get a cross I don’t fully agree. I want my dog to be able to self entertain and use his brain with out me being physically involved at all the time. You may argue that this may lessen the role of importance I hold in my dogs eyes because he is able to get enrichment outside of myself. But I would argue that this create a more confident, well rounded, and satisfied canine.

I want to call out that there's nothing inherently wrong with a puppy getting some satisfaction and fulfillment from sources that aren't the puppy's main human - enrichment particularly involves outlets to their evolutionary traits - my cat loves to bury her food, my puppy loves her designated digging spot, etc. I know this isn't the intent of the video, but some statements in it come off sounding like "careful, your puppy will learn to have fun without involving you and you don't want that" - wanting to be someone's ENTIRE world would be toxic in every other context but it's so normalized with our pets. Other than this ethical nitpick which has become a pet peeve (no pun intended) of mine , nice video about trying to prioritize bonding with your dog and building a positive relationship! We used slow-feeder food puzzles to help our puppy with isolation distress and it worked great! She used to get extremely anxious when i'd the room with her pen for a few seconds, and her barking was very loud as well. So, we started giving her a slow feeder with a bit of kibble in it every time we had to leave the room for a few minutes, and her behavior was completely re-wired in this context. Now, she is okay spending time on her own for a few minutes without us in the room and is content relaxing in her pen, even though we're no longer giving her these puzzles every time we leave. We routinely use lick-mats to give my cat and puppy pleasant experiences of being in close proximity to each other, which really helps the socialization process by letting them know that certain nice things are only available when the other is around. We've noticed this really helps our cat come around, overcome her skittishness and spend more time around our puppy. We also heavily rely on kongs in the crate to make the crate association more positive and have it really feel like her little den. We also use snuffle mats to get our border collie puppy to relax after an adrenaline filled fetch or play session, it really slows things down and serves as a nice "off switch" or a pre-bedtime ritual for her to calm down. It's also a great way to introduce them to scent work - dropping a single smelly treat into a thick snufflemat really makes them use their superpower of smell and can be quite challenging depending on the mat. For us, it's also a great way to keep our puppy occupied during work hours and teach her to be a bit more independent so that we can work while she calmly lurks around us.

I use a treat puzzle toy with my dog - he has to sit and wait and then gets the reward of “ finding” treats. The problem is I have created a monster - he is a maniac about routine and now this game is part of a cycle that he demands! Wait to be offered meal, finish meal, ask for treat game, complete game and within 1/2 hour ask for “bring a toy by name game”, with reward. He figures out these things too quickly and I am challenged to stay ahead of him and find changes. He mastered ringing a bell to go outside in two attempts, then quickly extrapolated that ringing the bell really just means I come to see what he needs. He isn’t wrong - it is all about perspective! I admit my dog is smarter than me.

'The word encrich means to add something to the life of your dog' This may be the dictionary definition of the word enrichment, but this isn't what enrichment means in terms of animals. Enrichment is providing opportunities for the animal to practice behaviours in their natural ethogram, that is their natural repertoire of behaviours. For dogs this will vary slightly from breed to breed but includes chasing, stalking, digging, sniffing, foraging, dissecting. Our dogs lives can also be enriched via smells and giving them agency by giving them choice over the things that happen in their lives. Due to the use of enrichment for other animals in captivity like in zoos there's fair bit of research on the subject. For anyone looking to learn more theres an absolutely fantastic book which references this research but is also very readable and down to earth 'Canine enrichment for the real world' by Allie Bender and Emily Strong.

enrichment toys definatly have their place. for example teaching a dog to settle while you're eating. you want them to leave you alone and focus on something else while your eating so putting them in their crate with a lickmat or a kong is great. teaching a service dog to settle during long classes etc you want something to occupy their mind while you focus on soething else, especially helpful for service dogs in training who may still be puppys and need more stimulation. a dog with mild seperation anxiety, giving them a kong while you practice leaving them for short durations and building up the time, if they learn to associate being left alone with a tasty kong , thats going to do wonders for them.

So letting the dog have fun without me is… bad? Isn’t that a little crazy? Our dog will be focused on us even if they have some outside fun. Also, not all of us are dog trainers and can spend all day with our dogs. Most of us need to leave a dog without us sometimes and why shouldn’t they enjoy that time?
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 2 жыл бұрын
That's right, Pawel! Well..sort of. As mentioned in the video, it all depends on the behavior of the dog. As adult learners, we assume things can only have one of 3 outcomes. Right, wrong, and perfect. But we all need to be open minded when it comes to learning. This is especially true when it comes to training your dog, because every dog has different needs in their training. As discussed in the video, if you have a dog who listens well, seems to be generally interested in you, is making good choices, then they can have a little more time with things like brain games, and toys/tools that are independent of you. But if you're struggling with your training, they are ignoring you, displaying all kinds of nuisance behaviors, then you need to shift the focus of the reward back to you. It's not about whether it's "right or wrong" for the dog. It's about more or less, and WHEN you use these kinds of "enrichment" tools. When you find the right balance, you'll see a BIG difference;) Happy Training!

Personally I like to have a balanced outlook - we walk together and train daily as well as learn the settle cue whilst I’m cleaning and pottering so puppy learns to chill in one spot while I move around him HOWEVER I’m disabled and can’t always provide my puppy and older dog with the exercise and mental stimulation they need so I make up kongs , snuffle mats , bones, lick mats etc as well as doing toy hide and seek and throwing their food out in the garden for scent work. Seem as I can’t work it’s super important my dogs can be independent of me as I really only leave the flat for hospital and want to know they can be calm during this without getting stressed that they’ve been thrown into a scenario in which they need to be independent. Like all things it’s being responsible and bringing balance and ensuring they are also learning to settle and be calm without enrichment too! My puppy is honestly a different dog to deal with when he’s had enrichment activities scattered throughout the day - he hardly bites , he’s open to cuddles and human interaction in a way calmer way , he’s interested in toys he was bored of , he sleeps long hours outside of his crate which he could never settle into before and I can tell it’s not just tiring him physically he’s also mentally drained fork using his nose and other thinking skills. As for my old girl (17 years) it brings her so much joy that she wags her tail and tip taps like a puppy all over again! I do like to make sure I mix things up so they don’t become obsessed on any particular routine or enrichment toy/activity but they really can be life savers for us people who have disabilities and don’t want our pets to suffer from Boredom etc because we are to sick to do anything some days and I’d assume people who work and are able bodied probably feel the exact same in wanting to provide for their pets with busy lives!

My older dog really likes some of the food games. But the new pup were bringing home definitely won't get them often until later because at the begining there's so much teaching and learning and ways to give food. The older dog still has a lot of energy, but she's much more mellow and definitely wants to just hang out more which is why I think they're really good for her. It gets her doing something but not doing so much she gets uncomfortable. I love just tossing some food so she has to go around and find it in the yard. I'll probably still use food games a little bit when first using the crate alone for some distraction and positive associations but a small amount, not a whole meal or anything.

They are learning how to settle when they are alone which is a something that is extremely important for most pet dogs. You use a lot of “nevers” in your script which lacks nuance. Then you add some back in at the end with leadership language. Confusing for the average pet owner.

So good to hear! We do tricks and go for walks. When I'm working in the fields I try to keep Q involved with what I'm doing. I've always thought the enrichment toys looked like a way to fatten my little sheltie up. If he's needing attention when I'm too busy I need to help with his needs, and sometimes that's time alone in his crate with a lick treat, followed with quality mama time.

We've found that when we travel, our dog is EXHAUSTED. He's with us every second, but just all of the new information/smells, etc. mean that when we are at a hotel, he's OUT. I wish I could be that hands-on with him every day. If anyone wants to support me financially so I can do that, it'd be great. :D But, yeah, our dog likes the ball full of treats. The other stuff we've tried, he has no interest in. He wants to hang out with us and do what we're doing. Except for chews. He does like to wind down with something good in his mouth. He's also 5.5 months and teething. But that's a nice break for me. My husband built an agility training set, and the dog likes that. But he's a whippet (the dog, not the husband) and some of the tricks we've tried to train... well, bless his heart. He just doesn't understand treat luring. :) Hey, he's pretty, though! This is a very brave and awesome video. As a trainer I’ve come across a lot of people who have done a very popular puppy training program before they come to my training class. Those are the puppies that are the most problematic and have the most behavioral issues generally speaking. The problem is just as you’re describing -that most of the puppies have been taught interact with plastic toys and other puzzle solving play things rather than interacting with the people directly. The earlier they start on these games the more they are occupied every second and when the puppy goes to a new owner the owner just doesn’t interact with the puppy as much as the puppy interacted with games and other puppies. This is a recipe for very bad behavior as a puppy grows up.

I see your point and I do use the snuffle mat occasionally. It's one of the games I do with both of my dogs. The youngest (18 months) is with me for 9 weeks, off the street and completely untrained and has no respect for anyones space (a very happy fellow who has never learned boundaries). Playing with the mat, gives me the opportunity to let him wait for the other dog (who gets to go first). Only hiding 2 or 3 treats in it, so the waiting does not take too long. I'm beside the mat, communicating with both dogs, picking up the mat as soon as the dog is ready, refill it and present it to the other dog. What I mean to say is, that I totally agree with what you say in this video, but I think it's not the mat itself, it's the way you use it. But let me know if you think I'm wrong...

I don’t mean to be rude.. but this sounds kind of selfish. The idea of a dog getting their needs met ONLY through you just so you can have 100% of their love, sounds like it could lead to attachment issues and to much codependency. A dog has to have some sort of independence, not to mention that a lot of dogs want that.

Hey there! I've worked at two different daycares and they were very different from each other. The first had one big okay group that was out for four hours in the morning, took a two hour break in their kennels, and then was out for three hours in the afternoon. The other daycare has multiple play groups based on the dogs personalities, play styles, and energy levels. The groups rotate play times and are out anywhere from 10-30minutes at a time based on the dogs needs, the weather, and how many dogs are there that day. Needless to say, the second daycare is a much better environment for the dogs than the first. Id suggest looking for a similar setup, where they can curate the play groups based on the dogs personalities. This will ensure your pup is being set up for success. The shorter play sessions and smaller groups are less overwhelming and reduce the chance of overstimulation.

Personally (I'm no dog trainer), I believe listening to other people and being polite around other dogs are good skills. I know they are tested on the canine good citizenship. So I imagine it depends, if the dog walker lets the dog misbehave maybe they are more harm than good? But if they also enforce good behavior then really I think it's good for the dog. I think dogs also need to learn confidence without their owners too, so it's a balance. You want a bonded dog but also one that is willing to work for others too?

I really feel like this video is giving the wrong message but that wasn't your intention when you made it. It isn't always necessarily true that owners should always be focusing on column A. A lot of people in the comments have already given examples for that which you agreed with. A brand new dog owner might see this and run full force with it thinking they're doing everything they can for their dog and end up with a dog that breaks out of their crate and tries to chew through the front door to find their owner because the dog never learned how to settle and enjoy alone time by practicing column B. We could chalk it up and say that they should have done more research but they thought they were when they were watching your video. I don't think the intent was to be misleading, I think the intent was to encourage bonding via training. However, I really feel that you should make a new video that balances the uses for column A and the uses for column B so there's a clearer message.

Hi there! Lately i've been watching a lot of your videos on your channel! We adopted an 8 weeks old puppy last thursday. It's a Jack Russell and i've been told that they are quite difficult to raise. So i'm gonna spend a lot of time to focus on her behaviour, specially in her early months! But she just wont stop biting her Bed Pillow. She just went outside, then we go back inside and we play with a few of her toys. but after a few minutes she walks to her Pillow and lays the toy down, and starts to bite in her pillow. I'll get her off the pillow and give her a toy back, she plays a few minutes > walks back to her pillow > starts biting..... Till she is tired and she prefers sleeping then biting in her pillow haha. Do you have any advice for me? would like her to stop biting her pillow, she has got enough toys to play with. And our previous dogg always destroyed her pillow in a few weeks. so i thought it would be smart to be consequent. But I have no clue what to do..... Thanks for your videos they really helped me a lot! Started to learn Sit with her today! and its going pretty well so far

i've had a few dogs and it's not difficult, be firm, be strict and be in control! i know puppies are cute and all but that's when you have to be MOST strict, the MOST firm and let the dog know you are in control and you maintain your alpha role otherwise they develop very bad habits. i try to run my dogs about 20 kms a week with their usual walks but i never get on the floor with them and play with them because that's what playing catch is for and it's done at the park not in my house. on the rare occasion i give them a bully stick and give them a kong to chew on but that's about the most games they get at home. when i leave the house i don't leave toys or treats, i go out and they know not to do anything bad while i'm gone. i don't make a big fuss about leaving or coming, i do it so well that they hardly react to me even coming back T_T lol but that's fine! i don't want them to be so damn dependent of me

I’ve noticed that a lot of people use “enrichment” as respite for them; so they can get a break. Don’t get me wrong, breaks are important. I’m disabled, and currently have a back injury and I have a near 6 month old crazy mix of a puppy. I need ALL the breaks 😂😂. But I’m seeing a trend that people are seeking enrichment as a means of giving their dog something to do that doesn’t involve them, so they can have a break. A lot of people complain that their dogs aren’t “getting” the puzzles they’ve plonked down in front of them and don’t understand you oftentimes need to help your dog through it. So this is definitely a timely video to remind me about my goals as an owner as well, thank you.

Loved this video! I totally agree that some pet parents shouldn't default to giving their puppies time-passers when they don't want to supervise/interact with them. I give my 4-month-old treat puzzles occasionally like the one shown in this video, ONLY when he is supervised, to mentally stimulate him between training sessions. Also, I make sure he has a kong and other durable chew toys in his crate to relieve his anxiety when I'm out of the room or away (his separation anxiety is proving to be quite challenging to conquer). Any tips on this? Again, great video! I didn't know that toys like that could affect a bond/connection with a puppy so drastically!
