That Chapter

5 жыл бұрын

In the 80's something very strange started happening; scientists working on top secret government projects in the UK started dying off at a disturbing rate, of times in bizarre and unexplainable ways. What was really going on at Marconi? How did 25 scientists who all worked for the same company and all on top secret military programmes, die?

*I was a "pure science" researcher in the latter half of the 1980s, and word of the Marconi deaths had spread far, wide, and as fast as the programs these people were attached to. Interesting note: the vast majority of these deaths were people [believed to be] assigned to radar systems, so they were all working on so-called "hot" or "kinetic" projects. The pure science research people seemed unaffected, but certainly no less nervous. I knew several people at the time who turned down SDI projects money out of fear they wouldn't be around to spend it. You have to remember that the Soviet Union saw the SDI programs as literally life or death for the Soviet Union, and in the end, these programs had a large part in the dissolution of the CCCP. Nobody had any doubt whatsoever that working on SDI could be very very bad for your health, as the KGB was not playing on this one. Even people working in the U.S. domestic market were spooked, as was federal law enforcement (lots of folks, including myself, got very unpleasant visits from federal agents for little or no reason at all, simply because these people were completely tech illiterate, and it was a period when tech was just starting to become widespread enough to be within the pervue of the mere "average" academics (while the law enforcement services had not a single clue what anything was, or how anything worked, or what should be considered normal or abnormal for a worker in these areas to own).* *The short version is that the 1980s SUCKED. We are all very glad they are over for good (especially SDI, which in my opinion [and in many others opinion as well] was just a huge bluff designed to bankrupt the Soviet Union by convincing them to try and "keep up" with programs that were pure fantasy island material! For instance, the "X-Ray Laser" platforms in orbit that were supposed to shoot down incoming missiles - lasers need a LOT of power. The SDI gave them their juice, in theory, by detonating an atomic bomb to provide the power for the laser to shoot a few beams at missiles. And since they were literally orbiting bomb platforms, (a) they could only be used once, regardless of effectiveness, and (b) blowing up all of thos platforms simultaneously, to "power the defense shield", would likely have stripped the planetary atmosphere away, resulting in the death of 100% of everyone! Not the kind of weapon you use **_defensively,_** right? I mean, wouldn't the defense team like to survive the "war"? Isn't that why these orbital platforms were supposedly going up there? SDI was pure hockum, but it did it's job. It scared the crap out of the CCCP, and played a huge role in ending the cold war.*

Like she said "wow." Thank you so much for providing some real context. I was a teenager in the 1980s and remember Reagan's announcements and the subsequent media reporting about the so called Star Wars initiatives. It fizzled out after a while and everything kind of moved on. Here in Australia I don't recall hearing anything about the deaths of Marconi employees, but since my father was a Defence Department radar engineer at the time (RIP dad) I knew of the company, and was aware it did hi tech stuff at the time. This is sensational stuff, I'm amazed I'm only hearing about it now in 2020.

I never see videos on this it seems. I know how this is going to sound, but bare with me here. My grandfather De'Shay was apart of this whole debacle. He was an engineer on the project.... (though idk if he's listed anywhere) My mom told me he was supposedly part of many classified projects with companies like NASA and government projects to do with aerospace, and of course, including the Star Wars program. According to her he went for a jog on the strand in CA along the beach and collapsed dead of a heart attack. My mom was called down first to identify the body, but it wasn't him. She said the body was shown was to short, eye color wrong, hair wrong and his arms were covered in needle marks. It simply wasn't him. My mom denied it was him, so they called my grandmother & uncle down to identify the body. After an hour in privet they declared it was him. My mom then went on confused and not understanding why her mom & brother would do that. The next day she was passing a payphone on her usual walk path that was ringing & decided to pick it up & it was my grandfather! He claimed he was fine & had to go away and that he left her some money and it would be in her bank account the next day and that he'd be back. She never heard or saw him again. She however did receive the money and found herself with a storage unit full of coded notes. My mom believed he never died, but was put into some sort of program like witness protection which was only reinforced when around in (I wanna say) 2010 a documentary or some news special aired they were reuniting someone with their parent whom had been part of the Star Wars program and given a new identity. Surely he's passed on by now, but my grandfather left behind a big mystery for us. Especially sense there is almost no digital documentation to hardly find beyond his birth certificate & maybe obituary sovwe have to rely in what physical documents we have & can find.

I believe you. My dad was an engineer who worked in several different industries and capacities. He worked at the CIA building and at one time did a project for NASA. I do know that he was in Italy working on some sort of system for the United States Navy. He was there with my mom. They did some sightseeing. He actually told my mother he didn’t think he would be leaving there alive. I also know that during ww 2 he spied for the army, in Italy. He did not come home. And we never saw his body or received ashes. The story told to me by my mother was that they were driving in the Alps when the car went out of control. The car went down an embankment and my dad died. My mom had small bruises on the back of her hands , and she was fine. The ambassador of Italy had my mom at their residence for about 2 weeks before she could come home. I personally never thought my dad died in the Alps and that there was never an accident.

So sad. I was in high school in the 70s and I would often ride my bike to my dads to work after school. He worked at the McDonnell Douglas missile and space division. I was known as Johnny‘s boy. People didn’t hesitate in talking around me and would even show me videos of weapons tests. The name Star Wars was used to ridicule the project as people thought the weapons that were talked about by news agencies were pure fantasy. You’ll have to take my word for it, those weapons and others did exist, as individual weapons. But I never heard anything about those weapons working as a system. By the timing it makes me think the people in the story we’re working on that, Getting everything to work together. As to the circumstances of the suicides it may be the perpetrators wanted to leave a messy scene not caring if it was declared a suicide, sure to make the news but also to send a message to others to stay in line or you too may meet with a suicide.

It’s hard to imagine so many people would consider blowing the whistle or turning on their own government or on a program sponsored by their government. It would have to be a really heinous project to cause such a reaction in the defense industry, I would think. Strange case, but if I were to venture a guess I’d say it was more than one body targeting these men, possibly intelligence services from competing nations. One possibly trying to identify and exploit leaks and another trying to plug them.

I think a couple of key points are that all of the victims had found another job and all of them had appointments with their state representative. They were working on top secret projects. They had been given "strange" assginments. I think they were uncomfortable with what the company was doing or planning to do. So they found another job and were going to voice their concerns. The fact that the owner of the company was also a victim, though, makes it seem like maybe it's another country...? Another important point is that the same company/project had employee victims in other countries...

I remember this string of deaths involving Marconi staff while I was working for the Old Chron.I think I covered the first one mentioned in this video, when the Marconi man allegedly drove his car off the main road. I remember we used to chat about 'another Marconi suicide' and speculate their mysterious fate. The most bizarre I can recall was attending an inquest to hear that yet another brilliant Marconista had committed suicide. This science boff attached electrical wires to both his big toes and then set a timer to switch on after he had listened to an LP on his old fashioned cabinet radiogram. He lay down on the front room carpet, probably swallowed some sleeping pills, and, hopefully having made his peace with his maker, turned on the turntable. The most bizarre suicide I ever covered, and I covered them routinely. I wonder what piece of music he chose? Anyway when the music stopped, so did his heart. Not being into conspiracy theories back in the day, and not wanting to upset one of our biggest advertisers the editor resisted our attempts to investigate what was going on. Our kindly editor assured us that investigative journalism was the domain of Fleet Street and so we all went back to covering flower shows. And lived to tell this tale!

nobbynoris Think about this though: like 12 employees had died from creative suicide by this point and the government said nothing was going on just coincidences. Had the coroner called it murder, what then? How would we know none of these cases had another coroner that disappeared coincidentally before the verdict came through? Had I been in their shoes, I’d probably take the hint and rule it an open case (no way to tell between murder accident and suicide). At the time the options pretty much were KGB or MI5 and the government claimed accidents so I don’t think it was KGB. Their favourite methods of operation were radioactive attacks and poisoning, either leaving the body whole or chopped up. None of these folks went out like that. These scientists were told to make space weapons of mass destruction, tried to quit their jobs and blow the whistle and had an accident. As a pathologist that’s all I’d need to know. My murder verdict would’ve never made it public regardless, but I could share coffins with the victim.

As with most things in life, if you apply the rule of Occam's razor then the most logical explanation is usually the correct one (and yes, I know that's not strictly what Occam's razor refers to but it's the general idea). Although it's possible that Marconi, the UK government or the US government had these scientists killed off (and by "government" I mean a government entity, whether it's MI5, the CIA, etc.), it's more likely it was a foreign power. The Russians?

The part of the precept you're glossing over in this case is the part that negates your theory... "all other solutions/explanations being equal." Well, all other explanations are not equal as "Russians" doesn't cover the whistleblower aspect to this case. But MI5 sure does.

Strange about Marconi deaths.. I’ve just looked after a senior member of Marconi management here in the north west uk of plessys/Marconi base in Liverpool who is in his early 60s and became seriously ill

Gonna be gone from the net for a time, no silly, this Hey You Grandma isn't going to jail, but wanted to wish you the best in getting up to that one hundred thousand "Hey You's"! You are an amazing narrator, researcher and all around cool dude, someone most of us here could sit and have a pint or two with, so keep that up for sure! Thought Cookies aren't really beer worthy munchies, but I'm sending them anyway with my appreciation for all the Hey You's here that make this place comfortable and interesting to sit around the campfire and hear stories with! I hope to be back soon, WITH my shiny metal hat, so everyone play fair and make wonderful, healthy, happy worlds to live in! Duces! : )

I was lucky enough to find the channel after Mike had a decent back catalogue so I was able to binge them, all caught up now though and click the notifications as soon as I see them.
