This is very interesting. In Thai language we have something similar to 了: 1. จัง, Jang (了 as a set structure) 2. ละ, La (了 change of status) 3. แล้ว, Liao (了 as completed action) Maybe 4. and 5. also exist in Thai language too, but I need some more time to comprehend them.

Miss Lin - I believe there is a mistake with 我下班了? You wrote it as 我下了班.

Actually it’s not a mistake to say 下了班. You add 了after verb since we consider 下班 is a verb.However you can also use 下 as a verb therefore 下了班 is correct too! For example: 下車了 and 下了車. Strictly speaking 下is the verb. Ms.Lin does a great job here! BTW, am a former Mandarin teacher living in US.林老師，妳很棒！

Chris Mills Hi Chris, I understand it can be frustrating if you’ve just started The “set structure” is the part beginners can pick up and just memorize it. Then once you learn more and get confused with all the 了 function you can always come back 😊
