Hello, subscriber from the Philippines here. My father passed away 30 years ago. I was only 17. He left behind this car, a W116 350 SE in light green color. Watching your video brought back a lot of good memories I had with him as a child. I would ride on the front passenger seat with the sunroof open while he drove. When there was an military coup that broke out in Manila, 8 of us rode in this car and travelled north. It sped through national highways, trekked rough provincial back roads, crossed rivers and traversed through mountain passes without missing a beat. The car has been sitting in our garage since 1998. Thank you for this video. It has inspired me to restore it back to its original condition.

Well, it's not like much of this, or these cars were not replaced or rebuilt. Gaskets, anything rubber, wood-veneer cracked when you sneezed in these W-116s, not to mention that there were only 40 or 50 moving parts. My 1998 W140 is 'Like New' and has much more creature comfort, technology, safety, power, and economy than these old tractors. Original paint, leather, dash, wood, double-pain glass, 11 speakers, etc. Will it last a lifetime? If I want it to. Oh, and armrest; standard equipment.

@dragospahontu I agree, a current Land Cruiser is yet a better car than average current cars, but then again, if you compare it to its ancestors J60, J80 or J100 series, it cannot surpass them in terms of robustness and longevity

I would love to see this as a regular feature. Mercedes Benz cars of this period were the best.The quality control and customer service of Mercedes was second to none during this time. Mercedes stopped making quality vehicles in about 1998. Today their cars don't stand out as being anything special and here in the UK are not well rated in reliability surveys. They need to look back to their roots and start producing more reliable and better built vehicles. At the moment Lexus are way ahead when it comes to reliability and customer satisfaction.Thanks for a great channel. Your car reviews are really detailed and comprehensive. Well done.

Hope Mercedes Classic will give you more cars to test - an R107 with a V8 perhaps! Yes, these 1970's & 1980's Mercs are quite 'modern' and useable in today's traffic. Extraordinary presentation. It's the same all over the world, I grew up in my dad's W115 230E 'Strich Acht', the same speedometer reached 200. I used to have a W201 190E 'Baby Benz', the best car I've ever owned, a totally bulletproof, totally satisfying car. With the same speedometer. (i kept it for 17 years). The 'normal' Mercedes sedans, coupes (and SLs), from the 1968 W114/115, up to 1998 and the end of production of the W140 S-Class, are still the best cars ever built, in the history of car manufacturing in general. Modern Mercedes' cars don't have that 'special' feeling.

First of all, I want to give a huge thanks to you sir for hosting such a masterpiece of engineering, that was for you. And for the car, it belongs to the era where Daimler Benz used to put limitless and priceless dedication in the process of automobile manufacturing in order to produce mobility icons not a mere of luxury ways of transportation. By the way, if you managed to put your hands on this, then you are so close from hosting the all-new Mercedes Benz S-class simply because you are as special as always.

5:48 You must look closely on newer Mercedes backlights Thomas. This ripped "feature" was used at newer models also. For example at the C-Class W203 2004. There is also at least 2 slightly rips. This design element was at least hinted at over several decades and was literally a Mercedes distinguishing feature.
@solid1378
@solid1378 4 жыл бұрын
The ribbed feature in the taillights was designed to be self-cleaning in inclement weather. The ribs were designed to channel/flush water through so that it removed dirt. It actually works. How do I know this? It was in the sales brochure from the 1982 300SD Turbodiesel that my Dad purchased at that time.
@florianj6490
@florianj6490 4 жыл бұрын
@@solid1378 Thomas gives the same explanation in the video. Mercedes probably brought this brochure with them to the appointment. However, this design feature and recognition feature was still used until the mid-2000s, although Thomas also said in the video that it quickly disappeared. But all the model series had this up to modern times from that time of.

Growing up in the 70's and 80's in Ireland I remember these cars with great affection. You had to be loaded to own them so I was always jealous when I saw them. They also had them in unique colours as well while the other brands had bland flat colours. They were so well made but like all cars back then rust was a nightmare. This car is simply stunning and I would be grinning ear to ear if I had one.

This is amazing, Thomas. Thank you for reviewing possibly my favourite old-school car ever. W116. As a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast and buyer, it really hits me close to home to see a review of a classic. And even more so since it is this model in particular. W116, W140, and W222 are some my favourite S-Class models. In other words, my favourite cars ever. But to clarify, I like all S-Class models (at least the ones I have seen in person and drove, which there are many). They all ride and feel so nice. W223 is a strong contender to also be one of my favourites, but I will only know for certain next year when I get to drive it. Yeah, I know it is (for some odd reason) controversial to like W223, but I am liking what I see so far. Some people will be triggered and angry at me for liking it and willing to give it a chance, but okay. Just my opinion. Don't get angry. This W116 really gets me because I got great memories with this car. First time I was inside one and felt it was when I just started High School. My crush/friend at the time: her parents drove one. She was my friend, but I was also in-love with her. I use to walk home from school...which was about a two and a half hour walk. That was a pretty long walk for me at the time. One day my friend/crush's parents gave me a lift home in this W116. I have never been so comfortable in my life, lol. And I say this even though I was taken to school in another Mercedes-Benz! Unbelievable! So it was not like I have never been in a Mercedes-Benz. Getting a lift in this car became more of a regular thing. One day my friend/crush and I were alone in the car. We pulled over for some reason. I don't remember. It was probably to take pictures of the scenery. I reckon I tell her that I am in-love with her, but I did not go through with it. I was too scared to say it! 😂 But we did have a great chat about life and our future. And we had a great few more years as friends. This W116 quickly became one of my first dream cars of the time. Still is. If I could find one in great condition, I would buy it. I cannot find them. I have been searching. My childhood crush and I have lost contact years ago. I would have bought her parents' one if it was still running. With regards to reliability of Mercedes-Benz - old versus new. From experience and talking to many Mercedes-Benz owners in my online and offline community, I think the reliability is still largely the same with ups and downs. Above average to average. I know people with S-Class, E-Class, and other models from around before and after the year 2001 are still with them today as daily drivers. They have reported to me that they had little to no issues. My first car was a hand-me-down from 2003. I gave it to one of my nieces who still has it. Reported little to no issues. My GLA 200 ran great, except the coolant leak problem I had. My sister has it now. Reported no issues. My current C-Class (though it is only about five years old) has not shown any signs of issues. According to random people on the internet, it should have broken right after the warranty. But the warranty is up long ago. I am keeping the car until 2024, maybe. I think that reliability is individual, not certain. You may get a lemon...you may not. I have had people (indirectly) admit to me that they did not take care of their car/s properly by telling me that they missed the service dates, did not change the oil often enough, and so on. People are so careless. I have worked at a car dealership some years ago and seen it for myself. Customers are so reckless, so bratty, and so careless. I have so many horror stories with these customers. This is not unique to Mercedes-Benz, though. Other car brands are having this problem. Just to clarify: I am not saying that a car breaking or having issues is 100% guaranteed to be the your fault. But I am saying to take a second look at yourself before you start pointing fingers at others. Please. Too many times I have experienced irresponsible people blame their cars and the dealerships because of the issues. Too many times did I have to hold my tongue because I wanted to call out customers for their blatant stupidity. Unfortunately, the customer is always right...even when they are blatantly wrong. To backtrack to this car: yeah, it is amazing. I absolutely love it. I think my compliment of this car holds much more weight and meaning than of someone else's who just has a love or bias towards older cars in general. I love new era cars, so for me to compliment a classic really is high praise. I do love older classics too. Of course I do, because one of my dreams is to start a vintage and old-school car collection...especially of older Mercedes-Benz models like this one. One day. In conclusion: I am like this car. Not only do I not care where it is built, I don't care WHEN it was built. Whether it was built in 2020 or 1972 is irrelevant to me when I look at a car. There is a great car out there...no matter the year it was born. Also, I am always ready and accepting of change in cars. I am okay when cars change rather than being stuck in the past. I will always give a new car a chance, rather than immediately hating or dismissing it just because it is different and not like the ones before it...and even vise versa with older cars. I gave those a chance too rather than immediately dismissing them for being too old-school or not being new or modern. Thanks to this mindset I have found and loved many more cars (old and new) than I would have otherwise. I have learned a lot too. And I do this with many things, not just cars. I keep an open mind. Cheers, Thomas. Great review. Sorry for the very long comment. I had a lot to say. ❤

Unsere Vorfahren waren halt in einigen Bereichen schlauer. 😗 Aber immer schön mit der Zeit gehen. 😉🤧👍

Beautiful car!! this and the W126 my two favourite S-Class of all time. I think Mercedes should really consider bringing these back into production I think there's a huge demand worldwide like myself who want that 70's 80's look! not every Mercedes enthusiast likes or desires Mercedes design language nowadays.

Amazing video Thomas, so awesome to see these oldies. You should do more of these. There's a current of thought that says cars from the 80/90 are better than contemporary cars. It'd be great to test those youngtimers and see if there's any truth to that.

One of my favorite segments you’ve done and I love all your work. The ‘70s S class was one of my favorites (I had a 1979 450 SLC) and this brought back some amazing memories. This is a gorgeous example and the color combo was about perfect. Interesting that I didn’t see a tachometer on the dash. I believe all U.S. vehicles had a tachometer. Keep these video’s coming. I’d love to see a BMW Bavaria or 3.0CS. Again, great work!!

Yes, I agree! The 1980s were the BEST decade for Mercedes, IMHO. The W126 S-Class (the one after this), is my _MOST FAVORITE_ S-Class of all time. The most timeless, classic, beautiful, innovative S Class of them all!! In fact, the Mercedes slogan at the time was _"Engineered like no other car in the world"_

I don’t believe they lost their way. The official statement was “our cars are over engineered” which made savings of over 1 billion pounds. So was a money saving exercise, I agree completely recent cars have not been as good.
