Because she wasted their time and embarrassed them. They killed her out of spite and to set an example. BUT saying that. In the original draft, it was Victoria who was killed. So it was originally meant to be the climax of the series. But Stephanie Myers publishers told her to write New Moon and Eclipse instead

They've been in power for thousands of years by slowly collecting vampires that have useful skills for protecting them, thats why they wanted Alice and eventually Bella once they saw her power. In the book, Aro is described as extremely jealous and fearful of Carlisle's coven as his coven is the single largest coven after Volturi. Aro fears Carlisle would increase his coven and by stroke of luck, stumble upon gifted vampires. As the book 4 ended, Olympic coven has the largest gifted members after the Volturi. Jasper can influence the emotions both immortal and mortal including shapeshifters, Alice has the premonition governing mortal and immortal, Bella is a shield (from the book it seems she can and may mentally shiel all supernatural beings and mortal) and Edward is a telepathic. While Renesmee have two abilities, penetrating shield and projecting thoughts and memory through physical touch.
