S60 is probably the best family car, doubling as executive sedan or even as wife's best choice. Its a multi-purpose car, you can go business meetings, finishing with friends or family trip with the kids and dogs, and not worry about ruining the interior too much. Its a comfy workhorse.

If you want keyless, it's an option. So the only thing you could potentially complain about is that it isn't standard, but it is indeed an option! The locking issue seems strange, but I've never experienced it. You can turn auto-locking off if that's not a huge feature needed for you.

My Volvo has keyless drive, with the personal car communicator. Meaning that I do not need the key/remote to unlock the car (just need it in my pocket, max 1,5m closer to the car) and either to launch it! Do you know what's so special about this Volvo? It's exotic-sism. It is an extremely elegant sedan with a drop top that resembles a coupe. It's the best of both worlds. Not to mention that the customization features are numerous, making the car extremely personal.

Simple, because I bought one and its performance has been very low, materials are very low cost and manufacture is poor. I think right now volvo can't compite with the big ones, only with vw and they loose on it.

Great review Bob! I also had troubles with the door-not-unlocking business, opted not to have it locked automatically which is less safe but more convenient. Having said that the electronic park brake does work very nicely with the Powershift transmission, which I understand is less popular in Europe than in Asia.

Just purchased a volvo s60 with platinum pkg. All things have been corrected, or maybe they just require that pkg. Hooks in trunk, full keyless entry (I don't have to insert key), all the doors unlock when passengers get out. I do have to unlock if i want to get into the backseat if no one is there. I do agree with the duel climate control complaint. I am in the US, no option for diesel here. :( Thanks for the review! Fun to watch and you totally get that for the price point details matter!! Thanks again!

The keyless drive option completely eliminates the "start-up" issues you are having. The unlocking issues are fixed with a few simple menu selections. The shopping hooks/netting can be ordered from dozens of aftermarket companies. I don't have the parking brake issue as I have an automatic, but I suppose you could leave it in gear if it truly was a problem for you. I will give you the dual temperature dial issue - it is annoying, but not what I would consider a deal breaker.

Why on earth would you want the parking brake to engage every time you stop ? I'd rather deal with the supposed quirks than pay more for a German car with inferior safety and often lesser reliability.

I like your review... I have to say that Volvo S60 is rated as more reliable than all those three competitor cars you referred to. And people who buy Volvos do so for different reasons that those other cars do not quite offer, so I guess they can live with the shortcomings you describe for what they get.

Love your reviews. Few would tell you about all those things that drive you mad. I once had a Japanese car with things that drove me mad like a wide C pillar, rubbish rearward visibility, too low gearing, too stiff suspension that made the car jiggle on the smoothest of roads, an accelerator that was so easy to push you couldn't rest your foot on it with constant throttle etc, etc,etc..

My Car -> Settings -> Car Settings -> Lock Settings -> Doors Unlock. From here, you can select "Driver door, then all," or just "all doors," or even "any door" so that whichever door you are nearest is the one that unlocks, but the other doors do not. Getting in and out of this vehicle, or starting and driving the vehicle, is actually one of the advantages of this car with keyless entry. The key never leaves my pocket, even when starting or stopping the engine.

It came with all the manuals and as you might notice I've had lots of test cars with hundreds of different settings, it wasn't the settings, I went through every menu in the screen and there was nothing about having the doors open when the driver gets out. If you try to start the car without the key in the hole a symbol pops up on the dash asking for the key. You always need your foot on the clutch to start almost any car these days.

@Bob Flavin . Keyless drive - option. Shopping bag holder - option. The locked doors issue, i THINK there is a setting for this. Im not sure. Just because this specific car is not equipped with it, that doesn't mean its not available. So some negative credit you give the car is not deserved if you ask me. Cheers

Nice review but kind of picky no? I drive a bmw 335i and my key needs to be in to start it and I cant even take it out while its on? I also have to UNLOCK to be able to get into the trunk and passenger doors? I do understand the A/C system would be frustrating but I don't think the FOB is a big deal..I do like that you can take it out once the cars on. not to mention when most people are used to using a metal key and actually turning it and then having to turn it back to get it out.. right?

Yes, the key is a bit stupid, but other manufacturers have it as well. The unlocking doors is the same on my S40 T5 - I guess it is good for preventing hijacking/unauthorised entry (I live in South Africa).I have never owned a car with grocery hooks. What do you think about the lack of spare wheel and boot size? I am considering a demo S60 T6 AWD - going for a good price (About the same as a Audi A4 1.8 TFSi SE manual (125kW) or a year old C180 Avantgarde.

Volvo compares this car to the 3 Series and A4 and honestly I do understand why Bob started with the negatives because those things are completely wrong, my friend has this Volvo S60 as a company car and he also thinks there is too much staff done for safety but not logical, I also believe its still not yet there to compare it to the 3 Series and A4 even the looks of this car isn't right

I can see why the doors all don't unlock at the same time. For someone who's young and single or alone while they're in the car most of the time, you wouldn't want someone to try to jump in the back of your car as you're getting out. I can say many women would love this as it reduces their chances of getting assaulted.

I assume you kept your foot on the clutch and brake when you were trying to start the engine without the key in the slot? If you don't do that the ignition will go into mode 1, i.e. power without engine. Once you get that right you can keep the key in the pocket and then you can open the boot without having to unlock the car. Also unlock opitons can be customised in car settings. I bet the demo didn't come with user manual?
@z00h

Might be a dumb question but did your car come with PCC? Only the ones with PCC (i.e. keyless) will work without the key. Why do they let you take the key out once it's started I don't know but it makes sense for nonkeyless car to require the key. Also the door issue is quite simple, just open the boot from inside. The only valid complaint I'd say was the climate controls and the non auto holding electronic brake.

Hello Bob, I like your previous reviews of cars. However this review is disappointing to me: when you're reviewing a car, I expect you to review the model you're driving, not just the car you're having there. You should do research on the equipment and options. Most of the flaws you're mentioning do exist, you just have to check it on the options list. That the same how it works with the germans: many things are available, but you need to check it on the list when ordering the car. To evaluate if the car can compete to german cars you should evaluate what is available (so even if it's an option), what the quality is of the interior and materials, the driving (engine, chassis and transmission), noise, overal design, engine options, etc.. - A hook in the trunk is an option - The keyless key option exists - About unlocking the car: you can personalize the car using the menus that all doors are unlocked once the engine is shut down and you open the drivers door - Automatically activating handbrake: this is not something that should be standard, when driving a premium car, you should decide when to use the handbrake, at least it is electronically and not a manual one like in the 3-series - Dual zone airco: why do you want that? Imagine that both were synced, you changed the one of the passenger and it also changes that of the driver or visa versa.. I think it would be stupid to buy a dual zone airco then. So at the end: half of the video you are talking about the flaws of the S60, which aren't actual flaws because Volvo offers solution for this, so as a buyer you have the choice. I would have liked more information on the driving, engine, possibilities of transmissions and options.

"when you're reviewing a car, I expect you to review the model you're driving, not just the car you're having there. You should do research on the equipment and options. Most of the flaws you're mentioning do exist, you just have to check it on the options list." Wrong, review the car I'm in first and if the standard equipment is less than the competition at the price point discuss. I can't review what I haven't tested so talking about options on some other car doesn't work. "To evaluate if the car can compete to german cars you should evaluate what is available (so even if it's an option), what the quality is of the interior and materials, the driving (engine, chassis and transmission), noise, overal(sic) design, engine options, etc." Wrong again, I test what's in front of me, I can't test what's not there. - A hook in the trunk is an option It shouldn't be, it's a necessary piece of equipment as it acts like a seat belt for shopping. - The keyless key option exists Well then it wasn't on my car so I can't review it. - About unlocking the car: I know this and how to do it, the point is it wasn't in the menus on my test car and again if it's not there it can't be tested. - Automatically activating handbrake: The point here is that I can turn off the car get out and the "Automatic" handbrake still doesn't come on, why bother with it? Put a handle in like normal. - Dual zone airco: Premium cars should have dual zone, it's not a big or difficult option at this price point. So at the end: half of the video you are talking about the flaws of the S60, which aren't actual flaws because Volvo offers solution for this, so as a buyer you have the choice. I would have liked more information on the driving, engine, possibilities of transmissions and options. I love the "Volvo offers solutions" don't you mean options? Options are not solutions they are a way to change the price of your car to compete with others but then you walk in and end up spending more at the dealer because everything is an option. Volvo have a good car here but it's frustrated by silly software stuff and things that are an option. I'm assuming that you work for Volvo and that means you have a vested interest in what I say about the cars but all you've done is reassure me that my review is bang on. Even Volvo Europe have told me that there's changes coming in the software that will make the whole system simpler to use.

If you compare Volvo with the German cars, I'd suggest you to do it right. When you'd read other reviews on the internet or even read car magazine they review not only the version they're having but also what is available. Really useful for one who is looking for a good review. It is useless to perform a review like you're doing on the model you're having. You're having there a almost base version of the S60, you should take a base version of the 3-series or A4, then we'll talk again if you want to do it this way. Ever seen the list of options for the A4 or 3-series? You're comparison is unfair because it relies on what the car dealer is giving you. You say that the S60 is no match based on what you've had on YOUR car? But what if you had a fully loaded S60 and your received a but naked A4 from Audi? Would say then that the S60 is more premium than an A4?? You'd better say "MY car was not premium enough, but you can make it more premium by checking options as you were checking it on Audi's list.." Hope you see my point..
@mykids4857
@mykids4857 10 жыл бұрын
Bob Flavin What really bothers me in this review: 1. If you call some things a flaw for Volvo, then call it also a flaw for the german premium cars. 2. If you state that Volvo isn't a match for the premium cars because of these flaws then, Audi, BMW and Mercedes aren't neither a match. 3. Please let me illustrate: Using your way of deduction we could conclude that an Audi A4 is not at all a premium car because of the following flaws that are not standard on the base model (using your arguments for the S60): - Hook in the trunk: is also optional on Audi A4 - Keyless function: is also optional on Audi A4 - Dual zone airco thing: Audi A4 offers only climate control for 1 zone And many other flaws: - no cruise control - no radio remote on steering wheel - make-up mirror in front not lighted - passenger seat height can't be changed - interior trim is cheap silver plastic instead of wood or aluminium - no attachment in trunk to keep small things away from moving around What is your reaction on Audi A4 base model?

Thing is it's an option, while in the others he spoke of, it's standard. I know it may vary from market to market, and in some countries you can have a kit or two as standards, or may even get them from the dealer, but what he's saying is that those did not came with the car he's driving, while it would have in some other manufacturers. Don't say stuff like "read the manual first" to a reporter, who's invited by manufacturers representatives to test their cars, 'cos they know more than that.

The key pushes into two clips in the slot but the physical key has nothing to do with starting. When you push the button the key tells the car that it's there in a "keyless" way. Sure the car won't start without the clips being held down but I bet that could be sorted with something the same shape or another Volvo key. If you've noticed, when the car is running you can take the key out of the slot and nothing happens? See it's Keyless. Every key is a transponder now, even Volvo

I don't buy a new car to put "aftermarket" parts on it, I expect them to be put in by the factory. You should never leave a manual car in gear, it's bad practice. Do you not see? Volvo are the only one doing it, that doesn't make it wrong just frustrating. If you forget something in the boot and get out it's locked, it would be a simple electronic change to make it open with the drivers door. 2nd point. To start the car I had to make 3 moves, put the key in, press the clutch and the press a button. If it was a key with a key hole I wold have to make 2 moves, key in hole and clutch. I think a S60 or V60 T6 R-Design is sexy ;). The new engines (VEA) will be a blast. The new T5 will have 245 HP/ 350NM 0-100 Km/h in 6.4 Sec and the new T6 4 Cylinder will have 306 HP and a Turbo + Supercharger. All that can be combined with a new 8 Speed Automatic. The same you get in the new Lexus IS and GS.

Is it really? How about 1) key in hole 2) foot on the clutch 3) turn the key to start the engine. With non keyless BMW you need to 1) put the key in the hole 2) depress the clutch 3) press the start/stop button. With non keyless VW e.g. Passat 1) put the key in the hole 2) foot on the clutch 3) push the key to start. I'm glad you didn't bash it for a poor quality of map data. Oh wait it didn't come with navigation did it. Regards the unlocking of doors, google the manual, page 129

It's a safety thing that Volvo claim, the car can't be remotely started. But then everything Volvo talk about is safety related.

100k on a 3 year old means one of two things. 1 Sales rep or 2. Taxi. I wouldn't have a problem with a Sales rep car because they tend to be well serviced and spend most of the time on motorways. I would have a problem with VW and 100k, watch for burning oil and get an emissions test done, if there's a main dealer full history I wouldn't worry too much.

The handbrake wouldn't come on automatically; why would the car assume operation of the handbrake just because you've stopped. It comes off automatically so the overall operation is as per all cars including my Peugeot 508.

Maybe Volvo is a bit too sophisticated for Ireland...In Holland Germany and Britain testers and users understand that handbrake, door lock, mirror fold, etc. preferences can be set/changed on the Sensus Touch panel. The highest spec S60 (Polestar 508 bhp) also trashes the highest spec Merc C-class 6.3 AMG in all aspects.

Surely the idea of having "Dual Zone" aircon, is so that you can have different temperatures on each side of the car should the passenger desire a cooler setting for example !! surely if you had only one control then it wouldn't be "Dual Zone" Is it me ?

The is an important reason why you have to put the key into the car before you start the engine... Otherwise a thief can easily record what the key transmits and get the car without any problem...

good review. Fair. The putting the key in in the slot then push a button thing to start is a joke. My 2011 xc60 was starting to get tougher to get the key out. I just bought a 2014 xc90 at a ridiculous price and it requires turning the key to start and that is an upgrade IMO. lol. At least I know the key will come out. I am pretty sure you can change locking options on the s60 though. I could in my xc60. All 4 doors unlock with a single click. I had to go in and change that though. Volvo's do not sell volumes so they tend to have terrible sales reps IMO. They are useless at explaining the car functions cause they are starving due to lack of sales. BMW always has the best sales reps. Smart on their part as they pay them well... at least where I am from. Same reps for 10 plus years. Sure that stability increases volumes. I can be sold on a car. Volvo expects you to sell yourself. Which ultimately I did but I am a car guy. I basically demoed the car to the Volvo sales rep sadly.

Not a ridiculous car(SUV) actually a great vehicle to drive. I have owned(leased) close to 20 vehicles. I put the XC90 up there. My 05 TL is still tops though. Great mileage and fun. Nice exterior and interior. I am a car nut so I change often. 05 TL was the only car I missed.

Another thing I will say is safety is never ridiculous. I was rear ended by a ford explorer in my 3 series BMW and it felt like I was tapped on the shoulder. 12 grand damage to my car. So glad it was a lease. No permanent neck damage. Dog was fine. Now that I have a child its safety first.

A thief can do that anyway, the key is a transponder no matter how close or far away it transmits info to the car and so it's no different than a keyless start.

great review as usual Bob but as a big fan of Audi, Mercedes Benz and the current Volvo range i think ur being far too critical of the s60 regarding the dual climate control !! doesnt the A4 also have very similar dual climate control knobs ! and why not test the new stonking D4 engine !!!

All the negatives pointed out are safety features of a Volvo. And unfortunately, this did not sound much like a review, but more like a personal opinion. Volvos are amazing cars. Mercedes, BMWs and Audis are sporty sexy cars, but they do not present the same class and status as a Volvo. That's personal but I bet you can see it. Look at most of the profile of the people who drive Volvos.

My big issue with it is the big cheap looking plastic bin between the front seats. Cheapest thinnest plastic, in an otherwise nice looking interior. Its so massive that the arm rest on top is next to useless, unless you like to imitate a chicken.

Front end doesn't seem to look nearly as nice as before, smarter and more elegant maybe, but not as cool. Don't think I've seen shopping bag holders in our 3 Series boot, not that I've looked, shopping just gets chucked in.

I could have been killed once by just changing the radio station and adjusting the temp. Volvo should not have had this type of problem with there cars! It is not safe at all! Because you have to look down to do anything and it is not easy to find the right buttons either!

I have the 2014 S60 T6 and literally the only problem I share with this review is the lack of single climate controls. Having to set both sides is annoying. Everything else I don't understand. 1. Mine starts without the key in the holding slot. So not sure what's wrong with this one. 2. It's not always necessary to have the handbrake on, so that's a non-issue. If you have a problem with having to press a single button, I highly suggest not getting a car with a foot emergency brake, you'll lose your mind. 3. Why would I ever get out of my car stopped somewhere with the keys still in the car? They're always going to be in my hand or in my pocket and the other doors and trunk will unlock as soon as a touch them. These aren't fundamental problems, they're nitpicky gripes that only pertains to people who think they're better than everyone else and need to be brought down a peg. As for the 3 Series and A4 comparisons, the look on their faces when I smoke them from a red light is priceless.

Hi, in terms of reliability, is the S60 model least reliable (even with frequent servicing) or with good care it rarely breaks down? Cheers

Volvo is much cheaper than Germans and in my opinion looks just as good as an Audi A6 or better. The one problem I have with this car is that the overall specification level is not as good as say a Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen or Audi. Still its the best family sedan you can buy. If you are looking for a more sporty car, I personally recommend the polestar version as it has a V6 direct injected engine with a turbo charger that makes 400 horsepower and goes from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph.
