Judy, I have written this before but I want to reiterate how much you have grown in your interviewing skills. You don't interrupt your guests and you don't make the show about you, rather you have a genuine interest when they speak to you.I have also noticed that you and your fellow colleagues who were child actors came from strong nuclear families and avoided the pitfalls that are common among other youth in the business. Debbie, you are so enlightening about the way an actor gets a role and I saw for myself the pressures put on young ballet students. Best wishes.

The world does crave and need The Waltons and shows like it as you said, Debbie. Thank you Judy for continuing to host these podcasts and particularly the interviews 50 years after the start of the series. I am just about to start my 3rd cycle through all the episodes and specials which takes the best part of a year, and I shall enjoy thinking about the podcasts on this cycle through, having watched them all so far. I used to think I was a unique obsessed Waltons fan until I came on here and discovered there are so many!! Mary Ellen is still my favourite character and you played her strength and vulnerabilty so convincingly.

@@DebbieTGunn I was given box sets of The Waltons, 10 series plus specials by my husband some years ago and I thought it might turn me into a couch potato so I only allowed myself to watch while cycling! : ) I also started out in Fringe Theatre, Film and TV after university but switched to teaching when my children reached school age. I was cast in a film as juvenile lead, when auditioning for a minor role, to support working in Fringe theatre. I left the theatre company mid rehearsals, which looking back was awful, being lured by a main role in a film. The process was not pleasant for many reasons, and I think my performance was poor, as was the directing, but I learned a lot being on set every day. I had a much better experience next as a very minor recurring character in a TV series, so they wrote my character a bigger part for the subsequent series, not realising that meantime I had taken my first full time eaching post, ( they then changed the character name for another actor to play it) and I became an educationalist like Kami. I directed thousands of students in many big productions, one even made it to The Royal National Theatre, something that might not have happened staying in the industry. Now retired I paint, write, dance, sew and wrangle grandchildren. So interesting to hear your story in the industry and how you emerged as a photographer. You come across as a lovely person!

Her story of leaving the industry reminds me of someone we know, doesn't it? Personally, my dance teacher wanted me to keep coming to class and always praised my "ability"...but I hated it, especially tap. I often (!) wonder what would've happened if I'd taken Barbara up on her most generous offer. I was afraid of leaving my friends. I could say so much on this, but it's really for someone else's eyes and ears...if ever. Great interview, Judy!

Now I have to go back and retrieve that "ASK JUDY" segment where you expanded on the "PROS AND CONS" of being a child actor. I am catching up on some of your recent guest videos - this last one with Debbie Gunn was so normal :*) I say normal because We often forget as fans that Debbie and You (outside of being stars) are normal too. :D I have more to say to Debbie on a separate post, but it was a lot to take in and I just wanted to comment a bit within Shyman's thread for now. It seems like the kindest people are actors on the Walton's (cast and guests). I think LA actors get a bad rap due to the ones who make the news (in a not good way). You and your guests are inspiring to me in your immense kindness, openness, and the unglamorous hard work it takes to be on a successful series.

I have the entire collection. I've watched them countless times every one of them. I don't know which one is my favorite. I was thinking about this today. There's somebody good ones that it's impossible to have a favorite. Today was watching the one with the teacher it was not mean but stern and how she opened up Have certain time and she ate with the family and stuff. So touching and heartwarming. I don't think there's another show on TV that had the special magic that the Waltons had. I remember we would watch it every week in the '70s with my family. Now I watch it and wish so much that The world was still like this. It hurts me it does that the world has changed a lot and I don't like it at all. I use the waltons as my comfort show. When I'm feeling down or afraid even the things going on I watch it and seems to calm me and sets me back to how I used to be I know that's my son corny or weird or whatever but I don't care. It's important to me. The show is legendary There's nothing like it ever and I don't think that every will be. The family growing up on TV like this It seems so real like these people are actually exist. Anyway trying to say how much I appreciate all the work I've been done on it from everyone on the cast. I think you made history.

I totally agree with Debbie about how having children occupies your life going forward as you raise them, care for them, love them and guide them into their own adulthoods. I have that experience like most parents have but feel that in itself, that part of my life was one of the most satisfying and precious parts of it. I am also discovering new hobbies now and one of these is photography and to be more specific, architectural photography, the older the dwellings, the better. Earl Hamner Jr was a true gentleman and a very rare one at that, his talent and work is still giving us fans immense pleasure and warmth. Thank you Debbie for your time and reaching out, thank you Judy for a superb segment and best wishes as always from your waltonian superfan in a warm n mild England😉

Wt a wonderful interview. Im from England watch all the interviews this is best by far.the pressure you were all under, maybe that's why the walton cast were close when you have good freinds you can shut out the madness of everything else.other programs might not hv had that support. Your all lucky you are so well adjusted. Although David seems happier away from the spotlight, he was always my favourite walton I don't know but maybe he doesn't realise how much people loved jimbob. Or maybe he does, but in his mind hes David. And can't understand the fascination .anyway I loved you all ,sometimes wish some visiting characters could have stayed.david and Debbie made a lovely pair . tony becker was one of my favourites. @DebbieTGunn Thank you for taking the time to share your life and experiences with us! The Waltons is very special to so many people. There are some who watch it and remember growing up during the 30s & 40s, those that watched it w their family every week, so they like to go back and remember those times, especially when family has passed on & those who had rough childhoods (for various reasons) & so desired the love and security that The Waltons showed every week. You all were so wonderful and believable on screen. The fact that all of you take such pride and love in the characters you played on the show is a testimony to how special it was! Thank you, Judy, for the time, effort and love you give to bring us these videos. Sorry, that this reply is so long. Thanks Judy. This was one of the most unexpected enjoyable interviews. What I mean is you wouldn't think a character such as Patsy would give us such an insight into what it was like to be a young actor, especially from the position of a minor role. I love all your interviews but this one particularly made me feel that even I could have played Patsy Brimmer and move on to a normal life. To make such big decisions at a young age when you're an actor must be so difficult and it looks like she chose what was perfect for her.

Debbie, I'm so glad you shared your audition experience! I can see and hear Earl Hamner's appreciation of your Patsy portrayal and his keen insight into what a genuinely sweet person you were and are. He knew those qualities would read well on the screen and definitely further illustrate the Walton family effect of kindness, concern, and generosity. There are so many very talented children who don't get the opportunity to participate in Hollywood or on Broadway! It's nice to hear you credit your Mom for driving great distances to auditions and helping organize your day and schoolwork. Judy, thank you so much for continuing your BTS with The Walton's videos. I enjoyed Debbie's story of her reading for The Walton's and Earl Hamner's reaction to her, saying, "I think we've found our Patsy!" That tells me how influential Hamner was and how in many instances he called the shots. Of course they didn't dilly-dally around since time was of the essence. They were all quick-studies and saw very deftly who and what they wanted.

Yeah , it isn't hard to imagine that acting is not for frail egos. I suppose that is why it is so hard for a lot of people , especially young actors, when the glory days come to an end. I'm happpy to see that everyone from the Walton show seemed to make it through those years and move on to other interests without a major depression or resort to self destructive behavior If you had Judy, I wouldn't have a new friend. Speaking of that, thanks for interviewing Debbie. She answered me and she is so much fun I feel like theres a mutual appreciation of each other developing here. At least I hope so, she and you are really the people I have been in contact most. Since I moved back to my hometown 33 years ago I have suffered the loss of so many relatives, classmates, legal associates, neighbors, former girlfriends, and even my secretaries, that I often wish that I had never returned. I guess at 74 I should expect it but it's hard to be a survivor of my happier associations Well moving on, I wish you would have been here in Illinois this week when the weather is so nice. My yard has been in bloom with wild violets in all the shady areas and sweet white clover in the sunny. We even had some wild strawberrys. This of course invites the rabbits and squirrels and all sorts of birds cardinals, blue jays, starlings, sparrows and wrens fortified by Nancy feeding them peanuts and seeds. And the cornflowers and Queen Anne's Lace are blooming along all the backroads and two lane highways with all thei blue and white glory.

Hi Bill, Thank you for watching part 2! I'm so sorry to know you have lost so many friends and colleagues :( I watched so many of my parents friends pass and it truly is a sad time, as you reflect about your own health. My mom tells me weekly about someone, it seems, and she worries when will it be her turn. We try to stop that rocking chair of worry to nowhere, but I do understand that it's hard not to think about it. She misses my dad greatly as well. Your garden sounds wonderful! I love wild Violets! In fact I have a "wild" little granddaughter named Violet :) She would most definitely eat the strawberries! I can hear and feel the birds! I often stand in my garden and listen to the chatter as I write very early in the morning outside :) ox

@@DebbieTGunn Nice to hear from you again Deb. Got on your page and love the photos! You have a good eye. Sorry about getting so maudlin but I lost my closest friend this year. Jerry was more like a brother than a firend. When I would stay at my grandmothers (almost every other weekend) he would stay with me and my grandmother would let us do anything we wanted. He moved to Oakland Ca, our junior year in high school so we lost touch after a while . But after my sister and mother suddenly died in 1982 he called me in Texas where I has just finished my Air Force tour and we stayed in touch. When I moved beck to my home after my Dad's passing he came home from his new home in Oregon several times. We even invited him back for our class reunions though he did not graduate with us. Everybody loved jJerry and some of us are planning memoral parry in his honor. As for my yard, actually there is no garden, everything is just growing wild. I used to garden in the past but with my illness I can't now. Listen I'd like to stay in touch. I haven't thought about Facebook because a lot of lawyers got in trouble saying things about judges and sometimes even clients that got them in hot water. And since so many of my friends and family can only be contacted by Ouija boards now, it didn't seem like a good move But meeting people like Judy and you have made me think maybe i should cuz I think i spend alot of time talking about stuf not really connected with the show. So let me know where we can stay in comtact.

@@judynorton2598 You're welcome. You know I look forward to being with you here and Debbie is an unexpected joy. The summer has been nice here and the flowers and crops are doing well. The corn is over six feet tall in some places. Looking at the countryside as Nancy and I drove around Sunday, I thought of Will and how much he would have enjoyed seeing a Midwest summer in full bloom before the dog days of August come and dry out a lot of it. Tomorrow night they are saying that we may get a glimpse of the Northern Lights. I hope so. When I first met Nancy, she and I sat on a hill outside the farm where we were staying in Maine, and watched the Northern Lights all night like Will and Ellen did in that scene where they were sitting on the hill talking about their time together. Once we get the farmhouse up and running you and anyone in the cast are welcome to come see us. I'd love to show you around what people normally fly over.
