The Waltons period clothes were a wonderful part of the show. From John Boy (Richard Thomas) and Mary Ellen's (Judy Norton) overalls, to the Baldwin sisters vintage dresses and hats. Corabeth Godsey's fashion flair and the John Waltons every day work clothes. We went from poor depression wear and barefoot to the fabulous fashion of the 40's.
Guest stars like Pippa Scott as The Actress - showcased fox wraps, and Walton siblings played hand- me-down with dresses.
In this behind the scenes of The Waltons - we take a look at how the wardrobe department worked. Originally headed by Oscar nominated costume designer Patricia Norris (10 Years a Slave) we went from Warner Bros wardrobe stock to shopping "off the rack" for 40's inspired looks in later seasons.
Come join Judy Norton for this glimpse into The Walton Clothes.

@@delip9303 and my point was, we don't get to pick and choose who gets hurt or dies. "Let him die, he's a bad person, no, let this one live, he's a good person" It doesn't work that way. Just like when Henry Blake got killed on his way home on M*A*S*H. The producers did it to remind us, that not everyone made it home, even when they were on their way home.

one of my favourite episodes was when the Baldwin sisters gave Elizabeth enough purple fabric to make a dress for her and her dolly. She was so delighted and excited to show them the finished dress that Mama had made. I think what captured me was that they allowed Kami to be the little girl she was - twirling and fluffing her dress and hopping on one toe.

@@dixielady2 My dad was born in 1939. He had 11 brothers and sisters. They lived in an old farm house in rural southern Indiana. He said it was horrible. ! The boys all slept upstairs in one large room. It had no heat or air conditioning. In the winter, snow blew in on them in their beds. At times, they had no shoes and very little clothes . And very little food too. He says they sometimes climbed trees to get eggs from birdnest. They had 1 gun for hunting. It was a very old shotgun. Held together with tape. It was a 12 gauge single shot. Someone gave them several 20 gauge shells. So, they had to wrap tape around them to make them fit in the gun. Dad used to say the Waltons lived like royalty compared to him. I've heard him say many times- "The good ole days weren't so good !".

I love how for the first 3 season was in the tom boy stage and wore jeans and overalls then you grew up and started wearing the dresses. I think they got the clothes quite right. The hair not always so much. It seemed to look the decade to me of the seventies for the most part on the girls. I thought they nailed it with Ike Godsey's store interior. It all looked like the goods were authentic 1930's. I used to feel like I had stepped back in time to that era/decade. I remember the dark blue dress Mary Ellen wore to the Quilting. It was outstanding, along with the peach dress and the burgundy gown given to you by Linda Purl's character. I always got a kick out of John Boy's "go to" outfit in the first couple of seasons, which was jeans and a tiny little vest sweater that was so tight it looked like it should have been Jim Bobs! Finally after his first year of college he settled into a comfortable pants and shirt look that was nice. Mama always looked nice in her special green dress that was "kind of elegant". Erin looked wonderful in her black graduation dress. So mature, much more-so than whatever I wore to my own graduation! I love my Waltons! -

@@l.m.malcolm2685 you are probably thinking about burlap bags being feed sacks and they would have been for larger gains like corn or beans. Wow, this took me back to watching the show! I always laid on the floor in front of the tv, back in the day and I also used to examine things about shows I was watching. I used to watch for things that seemed out of place. My mother was an avid seamstress and I was dragged through more fabric stores as a child than I want to remember. I would do this examining with Little House on the Prairie too. I noticed a couple of times the fabric was not the kind that would have been available back then, or a lace or trim that would have been out of their price range, but overall Walton clothing was perfect, in fact some DID look very threadbare, Elizabeth's especially. I did notice one time John Sr had on a blue jacket with a colorful plaid lining and I knew the jacket was a regular item at Sears! It was a classic style that's been around forever. Another time, I saw Victor French wearing the same jacket on Highway to Heaven. Maybe it was a wardrobe item. Little House was WAY off with their fabrics, especially in the Mercantile. To me, this was a bit like "breaking the wall" to me and kind of spoiled the story, which goes to show that costume people are VERY important. Sorry I was so long.

The later years saw the skirts and blouses you wore and thought to myself the same thing you said about the fashions wore in the seventies. I would wear them today. One dress in particular that Cora Beth wore had wide skirt and short sleeves and it was black and white can't remember the pattern but it was gorgeous. She looked great in it .

Afterthought: I remember stating in the "Baldwin Sisters" segment that they - The Baldwins - were "seeking social advancement in a town where there was none to be had..." In retrospect, what you stated about their costumage being of an earlier era made me rethink that notion. The Baldwins were well placed; I believe now it was CoraBeth who was the frustrated but determined social climber! 😉

Judy, I mentioned it before. But I liked the scene in "The Test", where Mary Ellen and Erin modeled the dresses that Olivia made for the Baldwin Sisters. Especially when Mary Ellen is wearing the elegant dress that Mamie Baldwin is, later seen in. I wonder if that was the same dress? Or did they have several of it available. I was reminded of the story of how Kate Winslett ended up wearing 28, quantity, of the white dress used in James Cameron's Titanic (1997), for after the sketch and then the chase, collision, ship sinking, and rescue scenes.

It was common to reuse older clothing, feed sacks and tablecloths as necessary to clothe the family. Even the blouse Jason? wore would have been done it the time if necessary. There were so many people with limited money at the time. And store bought clothing was more expensive at the time than home made or repurposed clothing according to my grandmas. Both of my grandmas were good at handquilting, embroidery and making clothes. One of my grandmas could take a look at a piece of clothing and reproduce it without a pattern. Every time I've seen that episode, I've always thought about it could be been altered, to make it look less like a girl's shirt, and more like a boy's. The collar could've been reshaped, to give a straight edge, as opposed to the scalloped edging, and the sleeves could've been let out, to get rid of that gathered, puffy look, and the even the buttons and button holes, could've been switched from one side to the other. I just think all thsy, every time I've watched that episode, and if all that had been done, maybe Jim Bob wouldn't have gotten beat up, though it's nice that Mary Ellen defended him. I guess, maybe the thought was, Olivia didn't have time to do all that extra tailoring, running the whole house like she did. Still....
