The Michael Shermer Show # 268
Shermer and Murray discuss: • what it takes to become a successful writer • Is this “war” on Western civilization just a necessary course correction from the sins of the past? • Is at least some of the criticisms of Western civilization a form of revenge for past wrongs? • CRT: If racism is not the explanation for the present Black/White differences in income, wealth, home ownership, and representation in professional careers, what is? • Racism and Antiracism • 1619 Project • BLM movement • White privilege • Colonialism and decolonizing cultural things • Monuments • If Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln should be cancelled, what about Marx? • Anti-Semitism • Objectivity and the search for truth: is this a Western tradition only? • Reparations: don’t we have a moral obligation to right a wrong?
Douglas Murray is an associate editor of The Spectator. His previous book, The Madness of Crowds, was a bestseller and a book of the year for The Times and The Sunday Times. His previous book, The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam, was published by Bloomsbury in May 2017. It spent almost twenty weeks on the Sunday Times bestseller list and was a number one bestseller in nonfiction. His new book is The War on the West in which Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric.

Great interview! Whenever I hear two non-Jews talk about and condemn antisemitism like this, my instinctive reaction is to ask "why would they?" I had the same reaction when watching a Peter Boghossian podcast with Tabia Lee. It's a strange and irrational reaction: why wouldn't thoughtful and intelligent people condemn any type of prejudice? So I'm not sure why I have that reaction. Maybe it's the fact that historically it has been rare. In any case, THANK YOU both.

Douglas Murray's advice for writers struck a sour note in my symphonic career as a generalist. I've had to come to the conclusion that being a jack-of-all-trades has been a splendid adventure of accumulating a string of near hits, except that by not being an expert in any of my chosen fields, financial success has--as one would expect---been the missing piece of the puzzle.

Great conversation to hear while 🚴‍♀️ cycling. I have read Murray’s book and his other two best sellers. He gives us much to think about on a position of skeptical inquiry into the current (wokeist) mindset and how it affects and infiltrates everything - not in a good way. Michael is one of the great atheist movement leaders and is fully correct to invite Douglas on to dismantle this new “religion” of DEI.

Claiming Murray is on par with Hitchens is an insult to him, he was far superior, a gadfly to the establishment also both anti Zionist and a fierce critic of anti semitism. Ridiculous to claim Churchill was the sole reason for defeat of Hitler-Russia military fatalities in WW2 were 8.8M and they accounted for 76% of German military losses. US and British combined military fatalities around 676k. If Churchill was so popular in his day-how come in the 1945 general election his opponent won a landslide victory? Murray fails to provide evidence that police killings of African Americans is exaggerated by " several orders of magnitude" -a totally sycophantic interview.

Perhaps the problem is the idea of "heroes" in the first place. Yes. Remember the past. But history shouldn't (obviously history isn't immune to bias) glorify. It should inform. It should always be scrutinized. Those who are deemed "heroes" were deemed as such by people in positions of power and power has never been deservedly earned. The powerful lift those that don't challenge their power. Right away that should draw into serious question who is deemed hero and/or villain.

@@PapaCrowZ Should every parent be a hero to their kids? I think we can all very comfortably say no right? Nothing should be protected soley due to status. Character should always matter most. No one should be beyond scrutiny or criticism. If it means that society gains a better understanding of humanity and how it should be valued, I think a reevaluation of "hero" characters is the least and possibly easiest thing to allow.
@PapaCrowZ
@PapaCrowZ 2 жыл бұрын
@@A_M_Bobb if I was to ask you what a good parent was, could you answer that? And if you did would you believe that your opinion would be universal? Scrutiny and criticism are critical but you get to a point, specifically with historical figures that because they weren’t like us they are bad, I would like to point out that without their fight, and without them winning that fight, ours in the present would have never happened at all, so to do this is wrong in my view. Just like I would find it wrong when a child or young adult tells me their parents are “bad” because they don’t agree with them or something equally petty. Every person has their battle in life and to say they weren’t good enough by todays standards, while true (technically) is ignorance of nuance.

Just know that anybody who spends time knocking down western heroes, despite some personal flaws, are jealous and envious, knowing that even those "bad" people taken in the worst light were, in fact, light years better than they are. The productive and accomplished are now rejected for the consumer and dependent victimhood factions. They are not good people, and almost universally prefer the rejection of liberty as free-dumb, and equality as being highly selective as to who gets all the government benefits and who should be subjected to government harm as they spend other people's money to increase their power.

May I add one anecdote about Winston Churchill that needs to be fact-checked, but that rather left me a bit dismayed in a tiny way? I forget where I read this, but apparently Churchill drank two bottles of champagne every day throughout him being Prime Minister during the second world war. Why was I dismayed? Frankly, it was because it seemed he had to be a little numbed-up to what was going on and by that I mean a little drunk. Well, nothing wrong with that someone might say, because he did a fine job. It just seemed to be a crutch and took away from him being an astute and gifted leader.

If he wasn't the right man for an incredible tough job, he would have been replaced. Trying to hold exceptional individuals to your bourgeoisie standards isn't just presumptuous but also incredibly vulgar. And by the way he threw in a couple of glasses of wiskey every day, so I heard.

@@zaniwoob GGGGGGGGGGGreat to hear from you. To criticize Churchill one must be careful. I was just a bit surprised to see how much he was drinking. But he did a smashing job and it just shows booze has a different effect on everyone. I'm doing my best to emulate the great man...

Douglas Murray is 'posh' and a conservative nationalist. There's only one thing worse than a posh British public school boy ...and that's an extremely angry and disgusted nationalist. As Murray now makes his money from hawking a sense of loss of 'bygone' values and disgust at those that want a change. "It is every new generations right to rebuild their world, anyway they see fit" If this upsets you, then you're already too old to stomach anymore change ...and are just moping about with your nostalgia. Nostalgia for a past the was never truly yours to begin with... it was always owned by the posh, rich elites. It was their past, that Douglas Murray is flogging as the "good ol' days" Marx is just a pathway that the posh hate. It may not lead to any kind of utopia, but it does 'piss the posh off'. It's their boogeyman, the guy that will take all of their cash away. He frightens them to their very core. Marx shows this world doesn’t have to be ‘set up’ the way it presently is. That’s dangerous stuff to the people who benefit from the current status quo. Winston Churchill was being used in the UK to keep people in line, to know their place... to continue serving the country that the elites own. He’s used to 'shut you up' and for you to be happy… that the elites are always safely in charge and control everything. Don't fall for Murrays nationalist, elitist rantings. The rich that own 'his and your country' literally hate you.

Yeah, no. You are being silly. Here are some pro tips on how to grow up to the general population as a group: Stop knocking up women and aborting kids. Practice safe sex. Once you have kids stay together. Value hard work. Value education. Stop fetishizing crime, gangsta culture, "music" that idolizes crime, violence, drug use. Eat less drugs. Invest into your future, and into the future of your kids, rather than into vain instant gratification. Stop buying into socialist lies and stop marrying yourself to the welfare state. If you practice these suggestions you should be out of the gutter within a generation or two. Enjoy.
