I'd say it's less on the world content and more on the quality of the game mechanics/systems. Since the world is largely procedural, each dungeon/cave/hideout/camp/etc. becomes a sort of rogue-like game that is carried by the mechanics and not the procedural levels

My uncle would be the first to say that when Ted TELLS YOU that his team Volunteered to build this with him because it's their "passion" to want to make this for everyone... you NEED to pay attention and throw your $$$ at them as fast and as hard as you can! It's a VERY rare thing for us to see people from Gramp's generation being this passionate about gaming and WANTING to build us a true to form huge RPG world! We'd be crazy not to support it! By the way, that Daggerfall game he made? I wasn't born yet when that came out! Like I think it's 4 or 5 years older than me but I went on my dad's pc and tried it for a few hours after seeing that first interview you did, and was surprised at the size of the game. I found it on Steam and put it in my own library and to this day still go in and play it, and experiment with making all kinds of RPG characters. That old man is a genius in my eyes! The problem with a lot of proc-gen rpgs imo is not that the world is same-y or whatever, but that they don't have good enough sandbox features that allow for emergent gameplay and keep things interesting. It's always 'be whoever / do whatever you want', but I don't know a single game that's even close. Yeah, I can do whatever I want, but if the game doesn't acknowledge and react to the things the player does, it's not worth a whole lot.
@vee1766
@vee1766 Ай бұрын
Because IT IS A PIPE DREAM. It's IMPOSSIBLE. When tf will people finally understand this...? Until we have very advanced technology that allows to truly create virtual worlds similar to the real world this is not something remotely possible. It's so sad how people keep falling for the same false promises over and over. A videogame is always limited by was put into it, so "be whoever you want and do whatever you want" is simple BULLSHIT, you can only be what the games allows you to be and do what the game allows to do. Wandering around a giant map "killing" and "looting" NPCs pretending that you are a bandit isn't "roleplaying", 10 seconds of dialogue with a dozen options to chose to explain why you are bandit, THAT is roleplaying.
@giuseppesagona7522
@giuseppesagona7522 Ай бұрын
bro of course we know that being whoever you want isn't true! Of course I can't be a freaking farmer in an action rpg! The "be whoever you want" is automatically translated to "take your path in the branches we built for you!". Like Fallout 2, yeah the ultimate goal is to find the GECK but in a single town you could become a slaver, kill the slavers in a gunfight, lock the door and prevent reinforcements from gunning you down, stock up on explosives and put them in their pockets! Convince the opposite faction of the slavers to help you gun them down! That's the "be whoever you want", it's not important what objective you reach, but how you reach it!
@OnceLostGames
@OnceLostGames Ай бұрын
To be fair, it's not be whoever, but be whatever kind of adventure you want to be. The game will acknowledge that you are an adventure, the skills that you have chosen, and the allies and enemies you've made. This is what defines your character.

I mean, Larian didnt even do what everyone claims they did - so what you really need is for this game, flaws and all, to be the right game at the right time - something no one can make happen. Or what you mean is we should ignore a lengthy early access period that still leads to a bug filled mess that practically explodes for the final third of the game, with illusion of choice all over and go around acting like its the most RPG of any PRG and get toxic at other games? Yeah, I will take less of that. there is the idea of what Larian did, but Larian just did what they always do and the game is not actually better or worse than the previous few - its just wore the DnD skin and said it was the sequal to a game that like Silent Hill 2 is more great in its time and place but not much for today.

i underestimated this man, i thought he didnt know about videogames and was trying to make the same thing over again of "your choices matter" but they dont really matter that much. Seems like he knows the state of current videogames and want to make something truly new. Ive always wanted that "virtual game master" that keep things interesting for me, in those exact words, so i know he gets what i want, he truly understands. It will be difficult to make it happen, its hard, AI can help to design lore and quests and make them interesting, but making those things to have an actual real effect on the physical world, on the power dynamics, on the state of the world, the fact that you can invade a village and slave them to build you a castle, you can AI it all you want, but we still need to translate that to the fact that the NPCs have to be able to change the world, to build, terraform and destroy, in a meaningful way, it will be difficult. But i hope in 5 years will be achievable

Will there be ‘power voids’, similar to the orc captain system in shadow of Mordor? By this I mean, using the werewolf example, would killing a creature of dark energy create a void that sort of attracts a different similar predator, such as a vampire, or maybe a necromancer. Incorporating such a feature in the lore and mechanics, could almost allow a fun explanation for monsters that come and go, through random generation, while also adding the potential for creatures to have ‘territories’ and may even fight over the borders. Coming across a battle between two different dragons could allow the player to kill one/let them fight and leave, allowing the other dragon to grow in power, or maybe slay both, with the magic coming from their lairs attracting more dragons to the area.
@OnceLostGames
@OnceLostGames Ай бұрын
Not really. Certainly not with monsters, but the focus of the game is on the Faction Political Struggle. You essentially are siding with a faction to take down their enemies. When you take out a leader, the other faction takes over. So in a way yes, but it is not that dynamic of a system and only relegated to the factions.

I am BEYOND hyped for this game. As a wee lass, my dad bought me Daggerfall when it was brand new and my little preteen ass made endless characters for that game, played it to conclusion and got so many endings but also played in ways that ignored the main plot really frequently...it remains to this day my favourite Elder Scrolls game and I play Daggerfall Unity regularly today. I am backing this at a high tier, believe me. There has not been a Daggerfall-like since Daggerfall, as Morrowind really inaugurated a new type of Elder Scrolls game that Oblivion and Skyrim followed and that TES VI is likely to continue. There has never really been a Daggerfall-like in the truest sense, and scope and scale is the biggest thing nothing really ever matches so I'm SO happy it's a main pillar.

Potentially interesting things about this Game: 1. Like Daggerfall. Could go incredibly wrong or incredibly right. 2. Magic is more rare. Few if any fantasy RPGs ever do this. My hope is that this means more time spent on "realism" or the fleshing out of mundane aspects of life in the world - in this way, the causal relationship of the lore to occurrences in the game would make more sense (eg. in elder scrolls I thought "if magic can create food out of nothing, why is there even farmers?"). Though, I'm keeping in mind that many fantasy RPGs with a lot of magic will also try to emphasize "realism" as well, just as a trend of being western games. 3. Some emphasis on non-combat seems interesting, though it should tie into the overall "adventure path" of certain character types. Eg. A book collector should have the grand objective of having their own personal library become the largest in the world, and they start on that path by swiping a book from a dungeon, and then I guess selling it so they can save up for their own private library, or something like that. If magic is more rare, there's less reason to get into fights? Hopefully this isn't because combat is worse. The problem is that, in exploring the game, the player will probably start their way down several adventure paths, but then either they discover they can't do EVERYTHING because the game forces them to concentrate several hours of their time on a specific thing in order to properly get it done - or they can if it's like elder scrolls, because the player character is large than life in that game. If in doing so, they could weave doing one into another, that would feel way more open than the more rigid elder scrolls style thing. Whereas if it's rigid like elder scrolls, then forcing a player to concentrate their time would feel more like a straight jacket, perhaps - and this is why Skyrim's devs chose to make it a "do anything" game, where the player could veer into any quest they like (and also why reputation mechanic wasn't too elaborate, because they were afraid of it confining the player; eg. "Brotherhood of assassins hates you, because you helped their rivals the thieves guild and can they trust if you're in a relationship with the local butter churner woman?". Adventure path example: A book collector wants to collect more books, and does so by selling one of those books to buy more books. This would start them down the merchant adventure path as well, but their grand goal is still the book collector one. If it were elder scrolls Skyrim (and I think Oblivion did this too), the book collector would have to go down a set path of quest chains to get to their end goal. Also, leveling up their book collecting skill would make enemies harder, meaning they'd have to learn better combat skills for no reason other than that the universe hates them, or that enemies are conspiring to end their book collecting career because their boss has a pathological hatred for book collectors. In a way, the Skyrim character can do everything, but they also HAVE to branch into everything. Factions that hate the Dragon Born will still employ him or her, because they're larger than life, and their skills are too useful to not hire to be used against their enemies and whatever (however much of a hand wave that feels like, story wise).

The idea that you can go in any direction, do anything that the game allows you to do, choose your skills and talents without limiting yourself by classes and have your actions in the world make a difference and make changes to the world over time, is a very good concept. Proc Gen is not a problem when you have so much free choice.. Though, my worries are that there wont be much to do anywhere. A huge empty world, with long horse rides before anything happens. Sure thinks to fight all over the place, but there also needs to be npc towns, random dungeons, npc heroes that are fighting monsters / dungeon crawling and maybe fail at it if you don't assist them. or something to fill the world with life.. A truly good combat system, an action system, a stealth system, a reputation based presence in a npc village system (so you enter a village and the npc who are of the type to know of you, maybe react in ways that makes sense to your reputation), a mining + crafting system, maybe even some building construction and or structure claiming system, magic and magic crafting system (magic crafting as in you can play around with spell creation, as a real life wizard would have been able to do, by combining known spell components + alchemy + scribing + scrolls etc, to create new spells / put them on gear as enchanting). These are the features that make the perfect open world RPG game. There will never be another game in the genre that's worth playing. Graphics are fine, but it does not need to be the more than a Valheim / Minecraft level graphics. We players don't need star citizen level graphics.
