Wrestling Bios Presents - The WCW Career of Sting : 1985 - 1996
During the active years of WCW on television, there was no one more popular than Sting. Through the years, Steve Borden stayed loyal to World Championship Wrestling, becoming a huge, succesful and popular fan favourite. If the WWE had Hulk Hogan during the late 80s and early 90s, then WCW had Sting.
Sting's rise to fame began in 1985 when he started his wrestling career. Teaming up with Jim Hellwig, Steve Borden began his wrestling career in a tag team with the future "Ultimate Warrior" but, as a team, Hellwig and Borden didn't get very far. When his Blade Runner team mate left to work in the Dallas area, Sting stayed in the UWF which was then eventually purchased by Jim Crockett promotions.
Within months, Sting became a huge superstar within JCP. Thanks to booker Dusty Rhodes giving Sting a chance, Steve Borden was able to work in some high calibre matches and put on some show stealing perfomances. His match against Ric Flair at the very first Clash of the Champions show cemented him as the next big thing in WCW. From that night, Sting would go on to win multiple titles in WCW and, in the end, fans would come to recognize Sting as "The Icon" in WCW.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at Sting's WCW Career from 1985 to 1996. During this time period, Sting would be remembered as "Surfer Sting", the gimmick he had before portraying his "Crow Sting" character. If you would like to continue on with Sting's career after this video, be sure to check out the following:

There's an alternative universe where Sting went to WWF instead of Warrior. He was chosen to beat Hogan at Wrestlemania 6. Unlike Warrior, he didn't mess it up and became the face of WWF in the 90s.

Theres also an alternate universe.. Where after TNA, Sting went WWE, didn't lose.. and then went to have an iconic WrestleMania moment vs. The Undertaker9with an unbroken streak).. Resulted in a NC, both men retired from WWE.. Sting had one more appearance when going into Hall of Fame and that night.. he beat Hogan clean and Ric flair was special guest referee... I like to pretend I live in that reality.. so I still get all the WcW and TNA moments.. plus good WWE moments.. cant talk on AEW.. I honestly don't watch it

Sting is a wrestling god. For real. The first time I saw pro-wrestling live was a WCW house show in 7th grade. Sting was one of my favorites, and by then I'd long known that wrestling was staged. Watching that house show, I realized exactly how good Sting was. Without the help of cameras and editing, he made everything look 100% real. His spots were really clean, and he sold everything in a believable way (no small feat considering he was working with John Tenta, LOL).

Both members of the Blade Runners (Steve Borden & Jim Hellwig) who came into the business together, went on to work in the 2 biggest wrestling companies in America when they split up Steve to WCW & Jim to WWF. Both men went on to become popular baby faces who painted their faces with face paint, became extremely popular with the fans and then went on to win lesser titles before becoming the World Heavyweight Champion in their companies. While they had a lot in common that’s where the similarities stopped. Steve aka Sting went on a put the effort to learn how to wrestle and strived to become a better wrestler, got better over time, had the respect from the other wrestlers and evolved his character. Jim aka Ultimate Warrior/Warrior never really looked to improve himself in the ring and had mostly poor matches, wasn’t like much by most wrestlers and never changed or evolved the Ultimate Warrior character

Steve and Ric's back and forth went all the way through WCW's lifespan. The very last match of WCW literally was sad to see, but it was one of the greatest matches ever to watch in full. His feud with Cactus Jack was a legendary as well. I always remember the "gift boxes" Mick Foley would have delivered to ringside and nobody knew what was inside. A ring girl, Cactus Jack, or something totally random. It was hilarious.

Loved Sting growing up. Although I always felt like he was some what overshadowed in the WCW they never really gave Sting the keys and let him truly be the face of the franchise. He was stuck in between the Flair era the Hogan era and the NWO era.

Thank you so much for this, as a kid, you tend to forget some memories, and this is such a great journey through time.... I remember how much I didn't like Flair (such a good heel), because I so badly wanted Sting to win... he just looked so cool, Sting just had that "it" factor... his make up got better through time but he truly captured the heart of many.... i think it's because the surfer look just made him seem like he was a cool guy... when the name "Icon" is thrown around often, some people dont live up to that word, but Sting is the essence of it.. a true Icon

Surfer Sting was one of the few main event guys I really liked watching in the Hogan vs Dungeon of Doom era of WCW. He and the cruicerweight division were what kept me watching WCW at that time.

WcW in the mid to late 90's was the golden age for wrestling. WWF had a lot of its best times in that era too especially during the Monday night wars. I don't think Wrestling will ever top that time period in our lifetimes.
