The Jeff Wittek thing is so wild. How is he going to joke about this when he almost killed him and it's still quite recent? Shane and James shouldn’t even have the option to comeback. KZbin and other platforms should do better at not allowing people who are a danger to their fans or others to not be allowed to comeback and continue making money off their fans. They should do a better job as a company since the people coming back obviously have no remorse or sincerity towards their actions. Also how how all James victims are kids and how if he comes back it’s only showing them that even if they do come forward there’s no consequences for the people involved except the kids who probably got bullied by their loyal fans.

David Dobrik’s content is the same kind of material that was popularized by Jackass except it has none of the parental advisory, warnings, or crew making sure that any kind of safety precautions and/or paramedics are on sight for their dangerous stunts. The worst part is that it’s paraded around as CHILD FRIENDLY CONTENT. He needs to be demonetized forever.
@BuilderBobda
@BuilderBobda 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the problem is that even in the height of his popularity his channel didn’t have ads anyway. He made money through sponsorships, so demonetizing will not do anything. He wasn’t considered child friendly by KZbin since there was cussing and other reasons, so he’s not had ads like a typical youtuber. Now I agree that the public seems to believe he was child friendly (which is completely ridiculous even before people found out about the sexual assault and other incidences).

For me, it's not about forgiving people - none of these people did anything to me and I have nothing to forgive them for. How I see it, it's more so that I have set a standard for myself of what I will not accept from the people in my life, the content I consume and the people I support. Everyone makes mistakes but some mistakes are worse than others and some mistakes aren't mistakes, but proven patterns of deliberate behaviour. Once someone acts below that standard, I just have to part ways. No beef, no hate, but what David Dobrik did, what Shane Dawson did and what Jail Charles did crossed a line. I'm not angry with them, I'm not upset with them, I just can't countenance supporting them. Tati hasn't yet crossed that line.
@nopenopexx
@nopenopexx 3 жыл бұрын
That’s such an interesting take actually. I find slightly off putting how influencers ask for forgiveness and in turn the audiences condescendingly accept it or not. That’s not holding someone accountable, often times it’s mob mentality, slapping someone on the wrist and then they are allowed to comeback. It’s better to have a conversation, point out what is wrong, internalize it and make a new standard for yourself moving forward.

@@neogenesis0065 interesting you don't see her having any openings to come back because I feel the opposite, her videos of her series are being received very well according to the comments. There are people saying they now understand, they forgive, they love seeing the "real Gabbie" which I think is because she's masterful at doing the "what about" distraction tactic so people compound all those other peoples as a whole vs her by herself which makes them see her as a victim and forgive her. Gabbie is doing a long game for sure and her series is just another play, she knows that to continue living her lifestyle she could afford it via KZbin because her music will never be taken seriously by the music industry and listeners so it's either do the long game or actually totally leave and get a job in the career field of her two degrees.
@LesleyMVA
@LesleyMVA 3 жыл бұрын
@@neogenesis0065 I agree with you. I don’t think there’s any way for her to come back from this because the last time she was canceled she never really came back. She’s fantastic at getting people to talk about her, and driving people to other content creators channel’s that are talking about her. However, people aren’t going to her channel to see what she’s producing. By making the public frustrated and content creators coming out against her that ordinarily are silent, I don’t see a redemption arc or a come back in her future. I do find it concerning because when people make such permanent decisions or actions it usually means something. Hopefully it just means that she’s decided to live her best life out of the public eye and nothing damaging. I really never want to see the world against one person it just doesn’t feel right to me so I really do hope that she’s ok and the people that feel wronged by her are ok as well. I've seen this phenomenon of like, other traditional celebrities trying to "cancel cancel culture" and it's majorly disappointing to see. Margaret Atwood signed one of those online petitions for it which feels just so wrong and uncomfortable as she's someone who literally writes about being liberated from tyrrany and holding oppressors accountable. I know cancel culture and accountability culture are different, and I'm glad the tone of these conversations is changing to simply addressing the actions and refusing to let bad behavior be acceptable, but I wish people like Atwood would realize it's important for cancel culture to be what it is until it isn't.

I find one of David’s first videos back really disturbing when Todd sent David in to record Natalie privately sitting in bed without pants or underwear on and when David saw that she was naked, instead of leaving or turning off the camera, he laughed and continued recording her as she tried quickly covering herself with the blanket. Natalie called Todd a “sick f**k” for thinking that was funny to orchestrate. Even after her shock and saying that was sick, David and Todd just laughed about it all. nbd, just recording you naked without your consent Nat!! Part of the job and this friendship!! They JUST got in trouble for consent and SA issues and David and Todd still think it’s funny to invade a woman’s privacy and record and use her body without consent for their entertainment. They learned nothing.

And I’m aware Natalie laughed in the clip, but there’s a difference in when you laugh at a situation because it’s actually funny and when you laugh from shock and being uncomfortable. I also assume she gave permission for him to upload it, (which also plays into the conversation of the dynamics of their friend group and saying “no”), but my point is that Todd and David still thought invading her privacy and recording her partially naked without her consent was funny in the first place - despite their past issues with consent and both David and Todd’s alleged roles in the SA allegation.

To me it’s not about me “forgiving” a brand or an influencer. I don’t have any personal connection to a brand nor am I friends with influencers who have been cancelled, so it’s not my place to forgive especially if nothing was done to me personally. It’s just that after a brand or an influencer does something that’s shocking or very offensive, then I can’t help but look at them in different light. I don’t want to support a brand with racist allegations and end up with a negative interaction by the brand owner one day if I have an order issue or being treated like trash by customer service because I’ve heard about those things happening allegedly based on what people have told me. I don’t want to make a comment about not liking a brand or palette in someone’s video and have that influencer chew me out because they are offended because they have personal ties to the brand or stan the brand in some way. It hasn’t happened to me me but I’ve seen it happen to other people. I can’t help how I feel. I want to support brands and people I like and I don’t like mean spirited, dishonest, racist, homophobic, sexist, annoying brands and people. There’s so many other non problematic brands and non problematic people I can support. They aren’t my friends so I don’t owe them any type of loyalty or support, just like they don’t owe me anything. I know people get caught up in parasocial relationships but I try to be level headed about it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I also don’t agree with the statement “cancel culture doesn’t work” and I just kind of realized why. It works a lot more with mainstream celebrities, at least from what I’ve seen, because they rely on companies like record labels or film studios to get jobs. Companies will often cut ties with celebrities who have been cancelled just for pr and money reasons. The company usually doesn’t have any actual morals either way, but if that celebrity is less popular/profitable, they’ll get less job opportunities, for better or for worse. With KZbinrs, on the other hand, they can just come back whenever they want to. They might not get as many sponsorships, but they’re able to get back to what is left of their fanbase much more easily than mainstream celebrities.

I agree with your take here. I wish people didn't view calls for accountability as an all or nothing scenario where these creators either lose everything and can no longer come back to social media or it was a waste of time. The end goal for these creators should be to address their actions, apologize if it is necessary, and show a change in behavior and mentality. Calls for accountability are both for the creator themselves to change their behavior and face the reality of their actions and also creating a culture where we and others who are not influencers do not replicate the harmful behavior we call out. These movements to hold creators accontable should be more about changing all of our behavior to be more inclusive and positive and helpful and less about retribution (actually it shouldn't be retributive at all!). As for what I want out of comebacks, I'm not sure. I guess I don't want them to be a repeat offender and I don't want them to be making excuses for their actions. But other than that, whether or not I like the comeback will depend on how much i already enjoyed them and/or their content. And i'm not an all or nothing person when it comes to apologies - just bc it isn't perfect doesn't mean it was bad, and just bc some ppl got angry doesn't necessarily mean that those feelings are valid based on the action being deemed harmful or "problematic"

This was another great video, Hannah! I love hearing your perspective on these topics, because even when you get "ranty" I feel like you are still so much more level-headed than I am 😂 To answer your closing question, I think what makes the difference for me with the comebacks of creators has a lot to do with the severity of what made them leave in the first place, especially legally speaking. I think a lot of people often tend to forget that having a platform and/or large following on KZbin is a privilege for creators, big or small, and not a right. No one is entitled to the benefits YT or social media might provide for them, may that concern their following or paycheck. I think the fact that people like JS, SD and JC are still feeling confident enough to even show their face on the internet in such a bold, unapologetic way is such a slap in the face to everyone who was ever hurt by them. I feel with them the legal, real-world consequences of the literal crimes they have been guilty of just has not translated into their "influencer status" and it makes me feel very angry and numb at the same time that so many people and stans are still willing to look beyond that, and that they will likely never face any legal consequences for their actions in whatever way, shape or form. I am not against redemption arcs, and I do believe that people need to be allowed a chance to learn and grow from their mistakes when they are being called out for them and can apologise for them in a sincere way. I really do. I can forgive someone when I see them grow as a person and grow out of problematic behaviours, but with some creators this is not a case of someone being petty, or using a slur for attention or something. It's illegal stuff that should have gotten them banned off the platform, and yet here they are, still allowed to profit off of their name as an influencer.

I feel like the only apology that has ever gone truly well was Jenna's, and I do not think it was because it was the world's greatest apology, I think it's because she ended it with "and so I'm leaving." She gave herself the harshest "sentence" (whether that was her intention in leaving or not) and in doing so, people truly felt that she meant her apology, and wasn't just trying to save her career, since she was ending it. I have a feeling if she had immediately tried to continue her career she'd have gotten a little more backlash, sort of close to what Colleen had after her scandals. The apologies that go over the best seem directly related to how good the subsequent content is and how much joy it provides. That's why when Trisha deleted the joy of Frenemies from all our routines, the floodgates of every reason people ever hated her before were unleashed, since she was now going to be withholding our precious joy that we'd accepted as collateral in exchange for forgiveness. Weird stuff!

I’m surprised there isn’t more outrage about James Charles trying to come back. He broke the law and took advantage of children, he should be facing legal consequences! I completely agree that what he, Shane, and David did is unforgivable, and if KZbin continues to promote their content, they are proving that they value money over the safety of the people the use their platform.

I agree with your points, I just want to say that when you said in the beginning that they come back 'even though they've made their money' , it implies that there's actually a limit to human greed. As in, they've made their millions, they should be happy and move on. But I think we can see many rich people behaving like it's never enough, it probably becomes super easy to spend millions and so need more and more. So, I guess in short they come back because there are more millions to be made and spent.

I think understanding that the ultimate goal of anyone getting “cancelled” shouldn’t be to have their life ruined. But instead to prevent that behavior from happening again, to learn and grow from it, and to hopefully send a broader message that the behavior isn’t acceptable for anyone! The ruined life seems to be moving into revenge territory instead of rehabilitation or growth.

I think that's the problem I have with this video in particular. It seems as though Hannah is saying that the goal should be "this person behaved badly and did things I don't like so therefore my ideal world is that they just crawl into a hole and go away to never be seen again" rather than "I hope this person can learn from what they have done and come back better and use the platform they built to be a good influence in the future."

The Tati one is interesting because in hindsight, she was correct about James. Where she messed-up on was equating it to her vitamins, which made her look incredibly self-serving and manipulative. I think as long as Tati stays in her lane, she should be fine.

i rly love your commentary for how smart and measured it is with acknowledged possible personal bias included - it’s not an absolute rarity in the commentary genre ofc but i realised that’s the particular tone i love about it, the way you word things it’s got a genuinely journalistic sense to it unlike, honestly, quite a bit of commentary and media-deemed journalism (and i mean in the celebrity tabloids & magazines, i don’t mean political journalism that’d be a weird equivalency to make to a mainly famous people commentary channel). idk i just really like it and don’t think i ever thought much about the reasons why specifically, thanks for ya work

Tati is such a weird case, because she definitely was manipulative, but given everything that’s come out since then...I just don’t know. I feel like she got caught up in everything and was trying to protect her self-interest. As you said, it just makes you cautious about her. I’ve been waiting for someone to do a breakdown of her comeback because I didn’t necessarily want to give her my view (as if my singular view makes a difference 🤣).

Honestly, I really appreciated how honest Tati’s comeback video was. She was open and honest about where she’d been and why she left, addressed the status of the legal stuff that had happened while she was gone, and then made a point that she knew the ways that she had screwed up and how she has tried to grow and learn from the mistakes she made in the past during the time she was away. I feel like, for her followers, she’s one of the few influencers who has done the work to earn back their following.

People unironically comparing Jackie Aina telling someone to say “excuse me” or having drama with petty Paige to James Charles and Shane Dawson being sexually inappropriate with minors as if they are on the same level of seriousness is extremely problematic.
