what's even worse about the whole Rosalina thing is that she was only the main character in one game, Galaxy 2 she was only at the very very end of the post game, in 3d world she was only playable after you've beaten the game. she's truly the Queen of Spin-offs, It may be a "Mario" Spin-Off, but it's Rosalina's game, and we're all playing it.

Feels wild to me how every console carried a big rebrand for crossover/spinoff titles until the Switch. N64 put Peach's Castle everywhere, Sunshine's alumni and Isle Delfino were all over the GCN, and while more subtle, I'd argue that there are hints of Galaxy throughout the Wii Era. In the 7+ years since Odyssey, I don't think I've seen anything. None of the cute sugar skull guys, no Cappy, like Mayor Pauline now I GUESS, and CERTAINLY no prize ceremonies in New Donk City.

Yeah I always found that weird, even the WiiU Mario spinoffs had some 3D world and Galaxy 2 influence in them. Most of the Mario spinoffs on switch theming wise are just NSMB and maybe some 3D world but no odyssey besides Pauline

I got my Switch pretty late into the console’s lifespan; and yet, despite being a lifelong _Mario_ fan, I have virtually no interest in _Odyssey_ because its legacy is non-existent. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that 8 released without Bowser Jr and that it took until 8's final DLC to even get Diddy Kong. Also weird that it for as important as he is, Kamek's been in as many titles as Paratroopa. Though I will say it's cool that the Switch revived Pauline, and for as underwhelming as the Switch spinoffs have been, we get 1-2 wacky picks minimum

The monst interesting thing about Kamek is that he was considered for the first Mario Kart ever, and then wasn't added to Kart until the las wave of 8 Deluxe DLC One may think that, of a character was considered for a game but cut last minute, he would be the first in priority order once rosters were expanded; specially if he was considered for the first game which featured only the essencials

There's only one character who could defeat Rosalina's tyranny... Honey queen. She was the other queen of the galaxy introduced into mario sports spinoff, alongside rosalina. But she was hated by everyone, while rosalina was loved and praised. Honey queen was banned from the mushroom kingdom, she's now just chilling in her galaxy with the bees. But she's the only one who could match the power of rosalina, after all both of them are queens of the galaxy. But why would she help the people who rejected her ? Because unlike rosalina she's not evil ! If the entire mario community call for her help, i'm sure she'll help us fighting the blue demon that we call rosalina.

You missed a couple of obscure snes spinoffs, like Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle, a Japanese exclusive snes remake of Excitebike that features Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario as playable characters. There’s also Wrecking Crew '98, a competitive multiplayer wrecking crew game. It features some standard Mario characters, like Mario Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Koopa, some wrecking crew characters, Foreman Spike and Eggplant Man in his only playable appearance, but also some absolutely wild picks, like Onigiri, a living ball of rice, and Oyazi, a middle aged Japanese man who is possibly drunk. Cool stuff. Edit: There’s also the Mario Kart arcade games, which feature Pac-Man characters, as well as Don-Chan from Taiko no Tatsujin(he’s a drum) and a Tamagotchi.

Onnanoko, the girl from Wrecking Crew, who’s name literally translates to young girl, looks kinda like Lulu I guess, but differs greatly in the fact that Onnanoko is actually a ghost and beating her in the game’s story mode allows her to ascend to the great beyond(I did not know this when making my original comment, otherwise I definitely would’ve mentioned it). According to the Mario wiki, Lulu is based off of Alice, the protagonist of the game Ballon Kid. The two wear identical outfits, plus Lulu uses Ballons to float around in Warioware Gold and controls very similarly to Alice in Warioware Get it Together. Now I have no idea if this is confirmed or if this is also just fan speculation, but I find it more likely than comparing her to Onnanoko from Wrecking Crew.

Considering Hammer Bros are some of the more notoriously formidable enemies in Mario, I think they deserve more rep. All those times I got sniped out of the air by a hammer, they were the real MVPs of Bowser's army. Then Strikers Charged comes around, and I can harness that power to bury the goalie in the dirt for a free shot on goal. Kids growing up on Battle League will never know that joy.

Eh, I think it's kind of a stretch to blame Rosalina for the bad state of recent Mario spin-offs (though admittedly I could also be a bit biased since Rosalina is one of my favorite Mario characters). Though I won't deny that the games have definitely been lackluster as of late and Nintendo hasn't been putting the same kind of love and care into the series since the Wii era. I seriously hope for the day we get quality titles in the Mario spin-off world again. And I do really love how informative you were in this video and it's really fun looking back at the fun and wacky rosters we used to have in Mario spin-offs and how they came to be.

I’ve recently been fond of the one off additions in the mobile games : Dr. Mario World and Mario Kart Tour. In the WiiU/early Switch doldrums, it felt like the one place where they were allowed to experiment with character rosters.

Donkey Kong Jr never left any rosters because the modern day Donkey Kong is the original Donkey Kong Jr, he just grew up. Cranky Kong is the donkey kong that you fight in the original arcade game.

I'd imagine Bowser wasn't planned for Mario's Tennis because his build is too bulky and unconventional. Despite using his adult design, Donkey Kong Jr is shrunk and slimmed down in the game, probably so he would be easier to animate. So Bowser probably would've been a challenge to get looking right.

Alot of people don't know this but Donkey Kong Jr Is actually the current Donkey Kong we see. And the Donkey kong from the arcade games is actually kranky Kong when he is still young.

Doctor Mario 64 having it's roster made up of Warioland 3 enemies always made it stand out in my mind, especially since I played it before knowing what Warioland even was. Can you imagine something like that happening today, where a Mario spinoff gets its cast made up of Warioware characters?
