Netflix's The Witcher is a total DISASTER and The showrunner is in full panic mode with a side of spin cycle.
Turns out it became a 'Netflix Adaption' after all.

The fact that Cavil corrects the interviewer and spells it out 'They're not being toxic, they're being passionate about the material' really speaks volumes about his character. He basically called out the narrative that interviewer ( regardless of if they meant to or not ) supported about 'Fans being toxic jerks.' My respect for Cavil keeps growing.

I felt relieved that Henry Cavill left, He was carrying the show. Imagine admiring the books and the games and basically auditioning for a role since you love it so much, only to know that the thing that you love the most isn't actually sticking to the source material. I actually liked the first season even with slight changes but the second one was a lot harder to take even with Henry in it. With that subpar script, Henry can't save and carry it alone.

If Fringilla at least was written right. Played by right actress and otherwise stuck to source material.. I could have took that pill and even enjoy it but what the hell they did to source material? To our heroes? To witchers? To lore? To Fringilla? Damn.. I got constant WTF expression when I watched it. It was damn chore I never will try to do again. First season was closest to original even when there were some bad moments. Toss a "coint to your witcher" was a catchy song.

Wasn't one of the writers of Netflix's Cowboy Bebop an executive's daughter? Or maybe she was working on another Netflix show. I have vague memories of her being your usual SJW millennial, with pink hair and rainbow clothes, all upset on twatter tirades against toxic istaphobe fans criticizing her show. I think it was Tom Konkle in a Midnight's Edge interview, who said that as a director who wants to stay independent, Netflix was one of the platforms that in a past allowed him to distribute his movies. But around the time of the pandemic, when he presented a project to Netflix, they would get enthusiastic and tell him they agree to finance it. He just needed to employ one of Netflix people in key positions. Tom had several back and forth, explaining to them the movie was already ready, everybody had their job, why would he need to hire an outsider? Blablabla... In conclusion, Tom made it clear that Netflix was starting to refuse producing any project if the creator did not put someone from Netflix in their production team. Tom also was hinting at other platforms than Netflix doing the same. Don't be naive. Activists who end up in big woke productions don't pop out of nowhere. Learn your lesson. They are placed with fake backgrounds, to make them appear like Joe Blows, but they are the kids and by-blows of certain very privileged people who like nothing better than nepotism.

Henry Cavill hit the nail on the head about the fandoms. All the fans really want is for the producers and writers to stick to the lore and storyline as well as capture the essence of the character they’re handling. Many of these companies have done the opposite and even mocked the fans and the story. That’s where the problems come in.
@chaos.corner
@chaos.corner Жыл бұрын
The problem, as ever, comes from the top. The media companies buy these properties as something to be exploited for profit. Now, that's only to be expected but unless corrected, that attitude permeates down. If you're lucky, you get talented people who respect the source material but if not, you have opportunists looking to push their own agenda who just look at the original property as a label to be slapped on what they produce to pull in a ready-made audience. That can't and doesn't last.
@ComposedSage75
@ComposedSage75 Жыл бұрын
@@chaos.corner another issue is the fact that the ones hired to fulfill these roles refuse (or are incentivized) to put their own politics into the roles they’re given and expect others to just be okay with that. They don’t care what the fans think and neither do the companies that influence it. They just see it as another property to destroy for the sake of THE MESSAGE.

As a Pole who grew up on books about the witcher, I must admit that I am glad that it happened. Despite everything, the work of Andrzej Sapkowski has been promoted in the world, as it deserves. If someone in the 90s had told me that the whole world would know Geralt of Rivia, I probably wouldn't have believed it. These books were incredibly progressive and very forward looking, but not in the modern sense. Dark fantasy dealing with heavy topics, rape, war, feminism, loss of innocence, political intrigue. A few good years before A Song of Ice and Fire, in small, gray and bleak Poland, which was just breaking the shackles of communism, something great was born. Nothing will take away the youth I spent with these books.

The Witcher should be a home run for Netflix that’s almost on par with Stranger Things. You have a ton of material to adapt, diverse casting options and strong female characters (apparently a requirement these days) and a certified A-list Hollywood celebrity who is a super fan. To derail something with that much going for it in 3 short seasons is kind of impressive, in a sort of morbid way.

They hired people who have never even HEARD of this IP, and had little to no writing credentials to their name ffs. Henry Cavill's portrayal of Geralt and Joey Batey's portrayal of Jaskier (Dandelion) was the only reason I watched the show. Their male friendship of platonic chemistry was a dynamic duo unlike other franchises, and they both represented a fitting symbiotic relationship as portrayed in the games. Geralt is socially accepted when Jaskier sings about his deeds, especially more so when Jaskier exaggerates it for Geralt's benefit. Jaskier also benefits because Geralt's adventures gives him a purpose in life, like a news reporter chasing a worthwhile event to cover.

When the TV Series, _Spartacus: Blood and Sand,_ recast the protagonist's actor, Andy Whitfield, for the series' second season, _Spartacus: Vengeance,_ it definitely felt "off" for a while. But it was entirely forgivable, eminently understandable even, given that Andy (tragically) passed away from cancer. And while we waited for them to settle on a new actor for the role, we got _Spartacus: Gods of the Arena_ to tide everyone over until filming of the second season could resume. But recasting Henry Cavil's _Geralt_ because the show runner and her cadre of authors drove him to walk away? Not so understandable. Not so forgivable.

The last bit of Henry talking about LOTR Extended was awesome and relatable. Any chance I get, I rewatch the movies because the story is great. The themes of bravery and hope in spite of the odds, the importance of friendship, and taking up a leadership role to help others sit well with me. That’s one of the reasons why that trilogy has stood the test of time and will continue to do so.

I think the major reasons for the success is that they actually tried to honor the books. They changed some things, left out some things, but for the most part they tried to tell the same story, same morals, as well as it is possible on a movie screen. It is not the same medium, some changes due to runtime ect. is sadly needed. But it still feels actors, costumes, direction, everything tried to be as faithful as possible. That is why I feel those movies are as good as they are. Everyone put in serious effort to produce something epic, that honors the works of Tolkien. Sure, they lost quiet a bit of that mentality with the Hobbit movies, but for LotR? One of the best movie series ever.

As a Polish fan of the books and the games at first, when they announced that they gonna make The Witcher show and Henry is gonna be Geralt I was skeptical, not gonna lie, in my imagination, Geral wasn't that bulky and had much rough face. But seeing his interviews, the way he is passionate about the characters, the lore, and that he is a fan of books and the games and watching him in season 1... now I do think he's a great Geralt. Netflix had a golden goose and they butchered it before it really goes off... The books were finished, the story completed, and the fan base already established.. all they had to do was just stick with the lore and Slavic culture... but nope "we love all cultures but not that one, its too white" so they cram in some woke feminist agenda... now they begging us to stay and watch that crap... hope it will get canceled and HBO in a few years will make a proper adaptation.

Even if they would make a movie based on historical facts in X-century Ireland they would cast "diverse" actors just to make a point.

I agree on all of that. I genuinely think even in Slavic folklore and history and everything, we still had enough badass women who were fairly good enough, and I think Sapkowski had that down too, more or less (as did the games), and as a woman myself - I think that this Hollywood FORCING this insane feminism + "you are racist cuz you don't want a Slavic based character to be a person of color" (The irony of that, btw!!!) bullshit is only making things worse really. Especially for established masterpieces like The Witcher. plus, what the hell did Skellige have if not badass women to boot? Oh right, wait, what was that in show? SKELIJ. O.o I am surprised with all the cancel culture going around, this show is still around.

@Yuki NoShinku It isn't diversity so much as it's a particular take on diversity. The entire writing staff might have the same upper middle class background, same politics, move in the same social circles, consume the same entertainment and have very similar educations but because they're a mix of ethnicities we'll be told they're "diverse". Respecting material and cultures only happens when they align with the views of the writers which is why you see token non-white actors being used in settings where realistically everyone should be white (although they might differ in various other ways such as language, religion, allegiance, status, etc).
@dsfs17987
@dsfs17987 Жыл бұрын
going with diverse cast wasn't the problem IMO, it was the rewrite of established characters and the whole story itself, and Yen in particular is rewritten in a way that makes zero sense, same with Vesemir, and the central plot of the S2 was totally unnecessary, all they had to do is adopt the books to the series, that was it, there was space for all the diversity, woke and alphabet people in it without changing a thing, it was the writer egos that ruined this, they thought they can write better and shat the bed instead

I think it's a very base attempt to call upon fans' "desperation" and love for Witcher content. Mam, how much thought did you put into that one. You are diverting further and further from the core of the highly acclaimed source material in a non constructive and unoriginal way, and are pleading for people to consider that the Witcher deserves to be expanded upon. That's just asking people to consume something for the sake of being vaguely or somewhat familiar. And from my understanding, Cavil stepping out doesn't indicate a refocusing of direction anytime soon.

The difference between Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich, the showrunner and Henry Cavill is that he was coming there to deliver the vision of the author, and understood he was going to do an adaptation to do so. So he took good source material, added and modified aspects of it (as an actor, to his character), and IMPROVED the character. He understood what's good, what's lacking and what would be better for TV. The showrunner doesn't understand those things, which is why he's better than her.

Henry Cavill knew only games but he fought tooth and nails to make his character at least a bit resemble Geralt. Showrunner was basicly trying to make Cavill play a sociopathic beta male. So Henry Cavill said enough
