The relationship between Nicole and Richard confused me as a child. Yeah he's caring, but he isn't husband or dad material, and lazy as hell. I also remember the episode where Gumball was invited to a funeral and mistook it as a date, and Richard had a random credit card. He withdrew some cash, sneezed, blew his nose with the cash before letting the wind take it, and then withdrew some more cash. I didn't know much about jobs, but I would wonder where he got that cash from. Looking back, considering he doesn't work, it was most likely Nicole's.

The reason Granny Jojo doesn't like Nicole is because she undermines Jojo's parenting style as seen in "The Authority" where it's point blank stated that her coddling of Richard pretty much made him the way he is and Jojo tried to do the same with her grandkids, before Nicole came home and dared to defy Jojo's way of "parenting". Meaning that from this episode we can infer that Jojo doesn't like Nicole because her presence makes it clear that what Jojo's been doing to Richard is wrong and a woman like Jojo doesn't like being confroted on her bs.

actually yes this is so true. i just rewatched the vid and got to where harriyanna describes jojo as an enabler, when, looking back on it, is Pretty Damn Accurate lol. now I'm trying to imagine a storyline where she finally lets go of her influence on the family :v edit: i would also like to add on that even nicole's own mother gave into nicole getting autonomy over her life, and stopped trying to seek other goals

The fatphobia in all these cartoons and live-action sitcoms is the reason why people feels so comfortable making awful "jokes" about us fat people. Cause at the end of the day, people REALLY hate fatness and fat people and that's always reflected in all these shows and movies. I wish that I had more shows as a kid where people with my body type weren't treated so gross just for being fat.

i've been on a mission to rewatch a lot of the animated series i adored growing up now that i'm a grown twenty-something and lord, has it been a wild ride in terms of misogyny. gravity falls was my most recent one, a series i lovingly remembered as progressive and as one that treated its femme characters well, but wow, my nostalgia glasses were shattered. tawog was the same way!! it's crazy how misogyny is so embedded in our culture that even shows with prominent and strong femme characters fall so short.

@@zackhruska i can see how you'd think i disliked it from my og comment bc i only mentioned something i don't like about it, but i LOVE gravity falls, just like i love a lot of other shows that i also find flaws in. it's important to engage in critical thought with media, especially media that explores loaded themes like gender, sexuality and relationships, which gravity falls does. without these discussions, media would never evolve. it's not a black and white situation where you either love absolutely everything about a show and find it flawless, or hate it and think it has zero value or merit; enjoyment and fanship is a complex spectrum.

as an asian person, i do feel that yuki's character and inspirations feel a bit more stereotyped and half-baked; not all asian ppl happen to be so successful as she does, and if they are, they wouldn't they have such skilful prowess. however, pls note that i am southeast asian (filipino) and not east asian (yuki's inspo is definitely Japanese but they culturally share many similarities with Korea and China). while i do interact with east asian media regularly (anime, k-drama, kr and jp music, learning their languages etc.) i don't exactly have that lived perspective to have a full insight ^^

As a kid, I kind of related to the Wattersons in terms of their family dynamic. Like they’re a dysfunctional family who love each other a lot. I felt seen in that sense because while my mom and dad are nothing like Richard and Nicole the show managed to convey that for me. Like the episode where Darwin was guilt-tripping them into getting him a new fish tank somehow spoke to me because my family (specifically my dad’s side) are really big guilt-trippers. I’m not saying I take pride in that tho, I don’t take pride in the fact that I have a dysfunctional family, but this show sort of spoke to me in that aspect. Maybe it’s all just how I interpret it but that’s just how I felt about it

I'm a white girl, but I think the whole thing with moms being hard on their daughters can go for foreigner parents too. My mom is Romanian, and she's crazy hard on me, but she sees my brother as this perfect, smart angel of light, and instead of talking about important matters with her husband like a normal wife would, she talks about it with him and always singles me out even though I'm older than him. He's practically perfect to her, but she NEVER fails to criticize me and look down on me no matter what I do, and I constantly feel like I have to do a lot just to not be a disappointment to her. About the target audience, the reason cartoons if that time like gumball regular show etc werent appropriate at times was bc they were originally created fir adult swim but weren’t accepted for being too “childish”. They were born to be in adult swim but forced into Cartoon Network. That’s why it appeals so much to adults and they tried so hard too. I’ve grown up in a bad up household and city full of just bad ppl and this cartoon was kinda deep for me. At some point my mom would ignore the messages or want me to turn it off because if his universal it is. It wasn’t just a kids show and got complex at times.

I don’t really understand how the couch joke was trans phobic the only thing gumball and Darwin said was “coach is a woman!” Because coach has a deeper voice and a more masculine character design so it makes sense that they would think she’s a man. And the “fat jokes” I don’t get that either because her character design is big but that doesn’t necessarily make her fat the only jokes regarding her size are like gumball trying to look at coach but having a hard time because coach is tall and wide and square and the jokes about her saying she did cartwheels and stuff but having no photos of such thing. I don’t see anything wrong with coach like you said none of these characters are human. I was excited to watch this video the amazing world of gumball is one of my favorite shows I’ve watched the seasons like 20 times over and I agreed with most of what you said.

Nah girl your hate for Richard is completely unfounded. You say you watched the show, but you don’t even know his full character? The early seasons of tawog show Richard and Nicole to be in a nice, but still very co-dependant relationship. And Nicole puts up with a LOT. But the later seasons of tawog delve into their marriage and explore why they love each other and why they are still happy and together. Literally the only time Nicole ever left Richard was when her agency and conscience was taken out of her by Rob with the remote. There’s countless episodes that show how much Richard and Nicole love each other, AND how Richard is a good father. “The Deal” literally shows how Richard keeps the kids sane and stops them from destroying everything. You can dislike Richard but pretending like he’s a completely terrible father or husband is just lying.
