I love that Daphne isn't a stereotypical pretty girl. She doesn't come off as bitchy and stuck up. She's actually pretty sweet. She literally hangs out with a Jock, a nerd, a social outcast, and a talking dog. We rarely get to see that in animation or live action media.

That's a type for pretty girls nowadays. Before pretty girls like Daphne were the nice ones because they were pretty. Being pretty and mean was supposed to be a deconstruction now it's just the other side of the coin

Understatement of the century. I appreciate both Daphne and Velma for different reasons. Daphne is an example of a female character that is comfortable with herself. To answer your question, when it comes to Beauty and Intelligence is that you don't have to choose. Some people may lean towards one more than the other but that's life.

Daphne is so amazing and vital she can fight, she's creative, she's smart, on top of that she's incredibly kind and supportive. That girl would go to bat for her friends without hesitation. P.S. I also watched PASWG when I was super young, as a little black girl I was in love with the show. I still love it even today. Stocking is also sexually promiscuous but everyone seems to forget that, Stocking has sex and talks about sex multiple times too

We def need to change the status quo on pretty isn’t smart. Another aspect that’s annoying in this is the need for people to always compare women/fem presenting people who are in proximity to each other. Like no one ever goes “Shaggy’s better” if you say you like Fred.

I feel like a lot of the time, people equate beauty with stupidity is due to their insecurity. People feel like someone who is not only good looking but also smart is too much of a threat so they try to downplay their intelligence based on superficial characters. This is why we get the dumb blonde tropes and the cultural hatred of pink, as if that makes you a bimbo.

I'm a Scooby Doo fan, and I have been saying these things for years. You literally took all the words out my mind and presented it in video form. It's honestly like the question (joke) me and my friend made in middle school during lunch(just as a light-hearted fun)- If Velma or Daphne was in the hood, who would have the common sense and intelligence to survive and live freely? And the answers were some of the wildest responses I ever heard in my life. Keep in mind, I working on my PH.D in African American Studies and I have heard/learned some deep/life altering things, but nothing gets people going more than the light-hearted stuff you think they wouldn't have a opinion on. Honestly, the whole gang is iconic and all of them played a important role in their success. GREAT VIDEO HARRI !

i hate comparing the characters because to me, it just wouldn't be the same without ALL of them!! they bring out the best qualities in each other and their friend group has such a nice contrast, with everyone having their own strengths and weaknesses :) i think the trend of trying to figure out who's the best/smartest character is so reductive because that's the whole point, that no one could do it alone and that we need the WHOLE team to solve mysteries!! but yeah i agree so much, some of the most intelligent girls i've ever met were also big fans of fashion and makeup. there's this group of hyperfeminine "girly" girls i accidentally befriended in high school because there was no one else in my english class i could do group projects with (i was a typical loner and art nerd), they immediately adopted me and hung out with me during class, and even beyond that. they were the only ones who were nice to me or even noticed me. one of them was in my PE class and calmed me down during a panic attack and sat with me for an hour, she handled it perfectly, another one of the girls wrote one of the most amazing papers i've ever read on islamophobia in america (since she's a muslim). and yet, when it came to these stupid "student polls" our graduation year book was doing, both of these girls were voted on first and second place for what was essentially the bimbo category. made me FURIOUS. how much someone cares about their appearance says absolutely nothing about their intelligence and i'm tired of kind, super smart women being reduced to "mean girls" or whatever just because of certain interests

Major fan of the franchise, even though i always liked Velma, especially form Mystery incorporated, I liked her snarky side and being nerdy, and i related to that more during my youth. But I like the fact that Daphne subverted the archetype of being the "Pretty Girl", she wasn't a typical lame mean girl character, she knew how to to physically defend herself and value her friendship with the rest of the Mystery gang. Now the the pretty vs. smart, I never understood where people think you just can't be both, especially from the female side of the argument. LOL, it has this "not like other girls" vibe which is sickening.

Never in a million years did I think Daphne Blake was “dumb”. I don’t even know where the hell that comes from. Even in the live action movies (which definitely have their problems) she wasn’t even portrayed as dumb per say. She was actually a very ambitious young woman who did anything and everything for the sake of the team and getting the mystery solved. Even if that meant she was the one who got captured first. Though it bugged her in the beginning she soon learned to defy people’s perception of her and fight back. That’s the Daphne Blake I know.

I don't remember enough of the og cartoon to weigh in on that, but def since at least the 90s daphne has been characterized as "people smart" in contrast to velma's "book smart" or fred's "strategy smart". From a story writing standpoint, she provides the practical skills like stealth/combat/interrogation, velma provides contextualizing info & analysis, fred organizes the group & finds the best way to utilize everyone's skillsets, & shaggy/scooby fill in whatever gaps are left. The reason every attempt to cut the series down to just 1 or 2 of them has flopped is bc they don't function independently of each other, narratively speaking. "Mystery inc" isn't a group of detectives, they're a single detective broken into highly specialized parts.

Team Daphne! She was always my favorite. I think she got disregarded a lot because she's very girly and things deemed as feminine aren't often seen as having much "practical" value. Not a fan of how she tends to get singled out in discussions for not having much depth or personality when she's just as goofy as her friends! They spend their free time /looking/ for problems in a van with a giant dog. They're quite literally all silly. The "girl that likes fashion needs a personality" is the lens a lot of people look through and it suspiciously doesn't apply to "neutral" or "masculine" interests. I think this falls under the case of people devaluing something to feel comfortable interacting with it. Velma's cool too, but I'm not gonna sit up and lie about who's my favorite.

I love all of Mystery Inc. because they ALL bring something to the table. And they're just close friends(or more if you want) at the end of the day. One of the worst decision any Scooby media can make is pitting Daphne and Velma against each other, because they are both incredible and it's a waste of time. Daphne definitely has the most nebulous depictions across Scooby, with some leaning towards her being ditzy or eccentric and others making her the ultimate girlboss. For me, Daphne is both, somewhere in the middle. I love when Daphne tricks the finger print scanners in Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed or like in The 13th Ghosts movie where she takes charge or in Trick or Treat! where she struggles with her identity until Fred calls *her* the leader. Anyways, Daphne's great and so is this video.

I think it definitely comes from a negative perception of the 1960s and 1970s Daphne that's why they called her "Danger Prone Daphne". And it comes from people who don't watch the later adaptations of Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, direct to vhs and DVD. I think it bleeds into later mainstream Scooby-Doo adaptions, like they're doing 1960s Daphne with a twist. Like how Live action Daphne can fight and trying to defeat the damsel in distress stereotype of her and Velma's Daphne is "Danger Prone Daphne" because she's *dangerous* .

They also forget that as revealed in loch ness monster , it's not her only, it's a genetic thing, her family, boys and girls, just have really bad luck. And how on most episodes and especially the movies it's the female sidekicks that get in trouble more than her. Like lemme think. Sharon Weatherby, Crystal from Alien Invaders, the Hex Girls, Mei Ling, Miyumi from Samurai Sword, Jessica from Camp Scare, Madeline from Abracadabra, Willow from Goblin King, the ghouls from ghoul school, mayor nettles, trini Lee, etc.

Also MI daphne ironically gets in trouble more often than 60s daphne. 60s daphne was unlucky, but more often than not she would fall through trap doors which isn't her being in trouble, she's clumsy and those doors usually lead to another clue, not a dungeon, she got actually taken like maybe 5 times? Whereas in MI she's kidnapped, sacrificed and attacked like constantly. If anything MI Daphne fits their warped image of her more bur even then not really.

Daphne was my favorite over Velma as the series aged because she was given way more backstory and character development. Like we never meet Velma's family but we meet ALL of Daphne's sisters and learn their family dynamic. Velma gets some more development in the Mystery Incorporated series but not on par with the little things we learn about Daphne that we can connect to her background. like the fact that she knows how to drive manual in multiple reboots because her rich family owns many kinds of luxury cars and her sister is a racecar driver. those little details along with an iconic character design & personality really MAKE a character loveable and memorable.

Ok I agree with you about Daphne not being stupid. I always thought she was just average. Though I guess as you pointed out people tend to think if someone is pretty probably means they aren't smart then the fact that Daphne is seen as the pretty then I can see why they may just assume she's not smart. Similarly I think the reverse was true for Velma but people challenged that with sexy Velma cosplays. So I guess we know need smart Daphne cosplays to push people's views of Daphne. But I have to say you took it to far saying Velma is smart in a way similar to Elon Musk. Musk is a rich guy pretending to be smart. He's a dark version of what people think Daphne is if she tried to Velma.

TLDR; Panty and Daphne are amazing, y'all are on crack Personally, Stocking is my favorite sister because she's more attractive to me as a character, She reminds me of myself in some aspects. I love Panty though, and I cant emphasize how much it annoys me when people down play Panty's character because shes a bit more "active," she and Stocking are way more similar than people like to admit and the strange fetishization of goth girls is also a large reason in why a lot of people (men) like her more. That is to say, I do like Velma more as a character than Daphne because I relate to her more, and I think she's more attractive to me as a character. That does not mean that I dont love and appreciate Daphnes' character though. A lot of people mistake Daphne as the dumb incapable rich girl who needs to be saved stereotype, even the gang does sometimes, but Daphne is actually such a valuable member of Mystery Inc. It's played off as a gag but Daphne is extremely intelligent. I recently binged Scooby doo mystery inc, and all the movies and you can really tell just how capable Daphne is in terms of wits and physical capabilities in most if not all iterations of Scooby Doo. That girl is literally a monster and I wish people would understand that

Daphne was always my favorite, because cute girly girls were always my favorite! I love how fashionable and fierce she was as well! I don't understand how anybody can disparage her, other than the typical misogyny and hatred of femininity ofc. These suckers need to go watch Legally Blonde, and maybe interact with some feminine women in real life, because a lot of us are some of the most fiercest toughest most badass bitches you ever did see. Never forget that. I like Velma too, but please stop using her to put another woman down. In addition, maybe watch Friendship is Magic as well. Rarity is the most feminine and flamboyant of the main ponies, and is a fashion diva, but rather than being a consumerist shopaholic, she turns her feminine passion into a career and makes clothes. She's an independent and creative working woman who is compassionate and kind and always lends a hoof to help her friends, and not to mention also knows how to kick some pony ass! Also they both are purple. So yeah respect her name!

In general, I feel like Hollywood has always been so weird when it comes to hyper femininity. If you like the color pink, wear makeup, love fashion and shopping, that somehow makes you vain, weak, a bitch, a slut and/or an idiot. Like, you can be pretty and smart!
