I can't believe you didn't react on the reveal that Gary is suicidal and... That might be the reason why he wanted to do the golden mile one more time before killing himself as the whole thing is hinted all throughout the movie... Gary didn't bring any luggage with him unlike his buddies, possibly bcuz he has no plan on going back to London. When one of his friend saw his childhood bully, Gary told him something like don't bottle up your emotions as it may comeback and be harmful or something like that and after saying that, gary said "and so I heard" hinting that he heard that a lot in his therapy sessions. In the worlds end, andy saw his bandages showing the he's hurting himself. And that's the reason why Gary doesn't want to show his arms in the smoke house. Gary could've removed the hospital tag but he left it attached so that when he finally kill himself, his family and friends will know that he has been having anxiety or depression and that's the reason why he committed suicide and it's not his family or friends fault. Gary had issues moving on and he's stuck in the past, he obviously doesn't want to age and wants everything to be the same when he was still in Newton haven. But despite he's fear of getting old he never shaves, beard is obviously a sign of aging but he didn't shave. The reason is bcuz Gary is not allowed to have razors in the hospital he's in. He obviously doesn't live in an apartment if you check the scene in the beginning when he was getting dressed, it's a hospital or something. Another hint of him hurting himself. And in the end of the movie, he finally shaves to signify that he's finally free and moved on. Out of the three movies in this trilogy this is my favorite one, there are layers in the plot and I'm pretty sure there more if you rewatch it.

I think I rewatched it everyday for a week, and caught something new every time. The easy ones like how they disappear in the same order as they did as teenagers, and the more difficult ones like you just explained. I work in a high intensity CPS facility, and have had to control the entire 'no razors' and self harm situations. What I really appreciate is how they don't beat you over the head with it and just give you subtle hints here and there to piece together. More powerful that way, even moreso than some movies meant to deal directly with the subject matter.

*It was a big lie. Nothing happened.* That line hits so hard. Gary is such a tragic character. That this made this my favorite in the trilogy. Simon and Nick are so good at switching up their characters, and those emotional moments . But Simon kills it in that scene. It’s so heartbreaking.

All theses films has a different view about the question of the individual (childish, closed, unsuitable) Vs society. Shan at first he don't to loose his "freedom" (childish selfishness) against zombies of a routine society. He may lose the woman he loves, so he has to take his life into his own hands. Hot Fuzz the town's board is what he can become, a fascist dystopia. He needs to relax. Stop wanting everything to always be perfect. World's end he is a social misfit who fights the current society where everyone is standardized (a mix of the 2 society of the 2 others movies). He is a nostalgic who must abandon the past to grow up.

I think this movie really stands out in the trilogy because of how mature and sincere it can get when dealing with gary and depression. of course it is most obvious in the reveal between gary and andy at the world’s end, but watching it a second time there are many smaller hints that gary is suicidal throughout, and it makes the film a bit sad on a rewatch. gary is the only one who didn’t bring any luggage on the trip, because he was planning on killing himself after completing the golden mile. they mention that he doesn’t go swimming anymore, and he refuses to show the scar on his elbow because he would have to roll up his sleeves and expose his wrists. you also realize that it isn’t just an aa meeting at the start, but a suicidal support group in the hospital he was living in. there are so many more details regarding these themes within the movie but I’m tired so I’m going to stop writing. but yeah this is my favorite of the trilogy, glad you enjoyed it
@karlkoley
@karlkoley 3 жыл бұрын
For me, the best of the trilogy, and the most intricately structured. The amount of set-ups and call-backs listed on its TV Tropes page is dizzying. Plus, ofc: "THEY TOLD ME WHEN TO GO TO BED," twinned with the reveal of Gary's bandaged wrists, is the most harrowing moment in any of them. I love how the protagonists of each Cornetto film face a new chronologial challenge in how to live - Shaun is a young man maturing / settling down, Nicholas Angel is a slightly older workaholic who learns to appreciate life / community - and Gary, sadly, is a lost soul - who grew old(ish) without growing up and faces real despair. Simpon Pegg went into the depths for this performance.

I love this movie - one of the most underappreciated movies of the 2010s. Most people quickly disregarded it as "the worst of the 3" because of the different tone but it's neck and neck with Hot Fuzz in my opinion. The pacing, dialogue, directing is about as good as you can get and the callbacks are consistently hilarious. Definitely one that needs multiple viewings to catch every joke (especially the early foreshadowing for the first 30 minutes) and it gets better with each viewing.
@SixShooterMM
@SixShooterMM 3 жыл бұрын
This is my favourite of the Cornetto films simply because of the huge amount of foreshadowing along with all the visual humour. If you watch it again you realise that the first attempt of the Golden Mile mirrors exactly what happens throughout the film. Also all the names of the pubs reference the events that happen in them i.e. The Old Familiar looks exactly like the First Post, The Famous Cock is the bar where Gary's recognised, and the Trusty Servant is where they see the Rev. Green, one of the robots collaborators.

I know a lot of people think this is the weakest of the three but I think this one actually is the best at genre blending. Shaun obviously was flawless in horror AND comedy but the dramatic side was never too deep in it, where as in The World's End I think the backstory, the motivations and the personality flaws are really concrete and real.

I appreciated this movie more on repeat viewings, as the revelations put new shading on characters' words and actions, especially Gary's, and you better see the parallels with the original attempt at the Golden Mile. Having been a teen goth and Sisters of Mercy fan, I got a few more tidbits of humor in this movie that most people don't. Like: When the choir and musical notes of blank Gary's entrance played, I was the only one in the theater who laughed, having instantly recognized Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion." (The song plays again at the end.)

The funny part is I didn't like the ending during my first watch. It seemed like a cop-out or overdrawn silly gag at first, but now it is possibly my favourite part of all 3 films. It perhaps doesn't fit with our expectation or that we don't like something weirdly different, but the dialogue is actually pretty revealing. Like humanity's obsession with productivity and 'good' life, which are pretty easily attainable goals for a very well-engineered machine. So, an ideal human is easily replaceable by 'all-knowing network'. The only thing that does make us human, is our flaws and traits our society looks down upon. This blends very well with the character of Gary King and his contrast with his more well-to-do and mature friends throughout the movie.

This is my favourite of the three films because of the twist at the end. As a person who's struggled with thoughts of suicide and self harm in the past, I loved the idea that the main comic relief of the film was in fact just a deeply broken man, because it rings true to the reality of people in those kinds of situations, a lot of them do put on a carefree mask and try to be the kind of person to make people laugh.

Hey Brandon! I wanted to let you know (if you’re not already aware) that Edgar Wrights student film “Dead Wright” is a great movie he made when he was 18. It’s about 40 minutes long and is freely available on KZbin. Just search up the title and you should find it easily. I think it would make an awesome reaction video! 😃👍

I remember first watching it in theaters, and it hit close to home with the Gary King (Simon Pegg) character. A man struggling with depression and feeling like he peaked early in life and has nothing to live for, or to look forward to. The lack of a love life, no job, etc. I was able to really empathize with that character on such a level it left me feeling depressed at the end. The only other film character that I related to so closely that I was left feeling super depressed after was Seymour Parish (Robin Williams) in the film "One Hour Photo." The loneliness and isolation he portrayed was stunning. The way the character blended into the background and practically disappeared when he wasn't making himself noticed just felt so relatable to me. If you haven't seen it, or reacted to it you should do One Hour Photo. Williams' acting is amazing in it.

Pretty sure the girl to the left of Simon Pegg in the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting was the zombie girl in the back garden in Sean of the Dead. I love how they've kept getting characters back from previous films.

If you notice, the main color associated with Blanks is Blue. When there's potentially Blanks around, there's a heavy amount of blue used on them or the scene around them. That's why O-Man and Peter are the only ones wearing blue, they're are the only ones to be taken by Blanks.

I have lived in London for 5 years and visited the areas around. I love that the movie is giving "explanation" on why all the pubs are becoming generic, with the same food menu not cooked on site anymore, but distributed by some generic big food industry brand. Same with the beer in fact. All in all very sad, I would try to avoid these generic "pubs" by all means.

Fun fact (source: screening of the film with Wright, Pegg, and Frost Q&A :D): for the bathroom fight scene, they wanted the actual fight (minus robot effects) to be real as possible, including having the actors playing the teens actually be teens. Meaning they needed to track down 5 extremely skilled combat performers who were also high school age, which is a tall order! They ended up casting via gymnasts, circuses and other performing companies; I believe all 5 of the boys in that scene were originally acrobats and had little or no acting experience before this film. That's how legit they wanted these robot fights to be!

Mentions of like 8:20 "they've all just been franchised, there's no nuance" and 13:25 "things seemed a bit unnatural earlier" got me like yeah! Those are big themes fr the film, the impersonal cookie cutter changes and feeling that smth is eerie about a place that used to be familiar, which you used to fit into in a happier past but can't anymore no matter how you try... Btw I'm /so/ pleased to hear you reference Kingsman, it makes perfect sense bc they actually used the same stunt choreographer! Brad Allan's really got this feel fr mixed martial arts as well as superb creativity re: environmental prop use i think, those fighting sequences are a joy to watch. Aaaa i just love this movie a lot and i love the elements you picked up on.

The woman sitting next to Gary in the therapy session was Mary, the zombie Shaun and Ed took out in "Shaun Of The Dead". The image of "The King's Head" was Simon Pegg, made to look like a 18th century king. Fittingly, his last name in the movie was King.

Also the two guys with the Reverend Green in the pub are in fantastic shows of their own. The guy on the right is in Uncle, a stunning show dealing with some very tough topics in a heartwarming and hilarious way, while the one on the left is one of the co-writers of Inside Number 9, which is like Black Mirror, but way more quirky and British

All of the movies deserve rewatching, but this one becomes the most cohesive after multiple viewings. The names of the pubs linking up to the following scenes, the fact that Gary tried to kill himself (hence his hospital visit and the AA meetings), even the intro sequence fits into the events of the film
