THE WORLD'S WORST REVIEW of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Bethesda's seminal open-world extravaganza, often hailed as a masterpiece that paved the way for the likes of Fallout 3 and Skyrim. And yet around every corner there's a system that doesn't function, and a dude running into a wall.
So, take your beer goggles off for a moment (or maybe even put them on?) as we explore this ridiculous realm, in THE WORLD'S WORST REVIEW of the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
The World's Worst Review is a review series in which I am attempting to review a game whilst also never once using the words "good", "bad", or any of either words' countless synonyms. Should I make such a catastrophic mistake, a lifetime of shame shall befall my family and my children shall be cursed.
"Worst", "worse", "better" and other terms are relative terms by the way! And do not mean "good" or "bad" on their own and are thus fair game. Words with good or bad connotations do not equal words that mean good or bad.

This is a reupload bc KZbin absolutely bodied me yesterday, do me a favour and just leave it on mute in the background for me till the end to help me recover in terms of views/metrics, will ya? ;) (or just watch it again bc it's great I mean hey it's your life) Yes, t'is true - this is in fact the finale of Season 2 of The World's Worst Review. But save your tears! For I've compiled a playlist of all of Season 2 in its entirety HERE so that you can check out any episodes you may have missed. kzbin.info/aero/PLxGDOO2WMLadR4A86_yzkFCFQhi76A-M2 This series started in July of last year with Tropical Freeze and since then it's become both my favourite thing to do on this channel and - I believe - my absolute best work. It may not rake in the views like more traditional reviews or video essays, but I'm immensely proud of it, and I assure you it will be back and better than ever down the line. For now, enjoy the video! And please do consider supporting the channel; www.patreon.com/nocturnalfudj Song List: 0:00 - 0:18 Exploring The Stolen Lands (Pathfinder: Kingmaker) 0:18 - 0:36 Uka Uka's Theme (Crash Twinsanity) 0:36 - 3:09 Stormwind (Hearthstone) 3:09 - 3:23 We Don't Go To Ravenholm (Half Life: Episode 2) 3:23 - 6:09 Peaceful Lands (Pathfinder: Kingmaker) 6:09 - 7:45 King and Country (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) 7:57 - 8:37 ONBS Building (Pokemon XD: Gale Of Darkness)

It sucks that the sustainability of these videos are definitely not great, due to the current climate of KZbin, but I wish I could change that because these videos are absolute gold. I'd definitely lump you together with the greats (in my opinion) like Jakey, Scott the Woz. Keep on pushing

My god Fudj im sure my friends are tired of hearing about you but i cant help it you keep releasing bangers and getting nuked by the algo gods. Its such a shame bc this video was great and your Skyrim De-View is my personal favorite as you managed to influence my opinion about a game i am heavily opinionated about while still keeping me overall neutral, a master class at the craft.

I believe KZbin already lowered the "power" of consecutive downloads on Premium, but best believe I'll make up for that debuff by redownloading this video till my thumbs frow weary and replaying it on mute till the mute button itself bursts like a dam. They can't do you dirty like this.

Now here's a game I should get around to playing sometime. I remember watching Vargskelethor Joel's streams of Oblivion, and I honestly believe that they're some of the drop-dead funniest streams he's ever done. Just complete chaos, both intentional and unintentional. Plus a lot of sneaking up behind people and just...instantly killing them with a melee attack.

The Elder Scrolls might be one of the weirdest fantasy videogame series despite playing the script pretty much straight compared to others. Oblivion was when I got into it, and while I haven’t put nearly as much time into the games as other people have (maybe like 2 playthroughs of Oblivion and 5 or so of Skyrim) I think that they’re quite incredible when all of the little facets of the system align. Those people never did look particularly good, though. Good thing those landscapes made up for ‘em and then some.

I wish i knew what it was about Oblivion specifically that captured me so much as a younglin that videogames these days cant even come close to. Like maybe Skyrim gave me some of those vibes, and morrowind ofc, but there aren’t many fantasy action games with rpg elements that capture that same feel. Ofc the Fallouts 3 and NV are similar based purely on being on the same baseline engine with similar design philosophies, but those games come with other aspects unique to the Wasteland/Apocalypse/Sci-Fi Americana theme that fantasy lacks. My biggest sticker is Magic! Magic in morrowind felt like you could theoretically do anything. Magic in Oblivion was still cool, but certainly more limited. Magic in Skyrim feels basically the same as energy weapons in Fallout. (Sorry for the rant tbh im just tryna comment on as many people as possible so i can help boost Fudj’s engagement)

I was so excited for Oblivion when it came out for PS3. "It's like Lord of the Rings, but you can go anywhere and do anything." Played it at a very young age and didn't really know what I was doing. I made an argonian because I thought lizard people looked cool and got lost in the woods around Cheydinhal. At the time I somehow didn't know I could fast travel, nor did I understand what the compass and quest marker were. Good times. Had no clue what that Dunmer was going about with her necrophilia question lol.

Damn, now I want to play it again. Look at what you've done, pointing me back towards this extremely charming mess of a game. I always avoid the main quest to roam around Cyrodiil, though. I bet amazing people wrote the story, but having to close those hell-gates that start popping everywhere takes away a lot of the fun for me.

I can respect the fact that you don't seem to enjoy the game and I know this is mostly tongue in cheek but I spent years playing this game and I feel compelled to defend it a bit. Their NPCs that moved around and had independent schedules broke 10% of the time but the other 90% it sold cyrodiil as a living, breathing world. The difficulty curve wasn't smooth but playing normally never broke the difficulty curve that badly. A lot of the lesser dungeons are copy paste but plenty of more important locations were appropriately tailored. You could just pick a random direction and be certain you'd find something interesting. The number of tools you are given are diverse and most are fun to use, as well as the types of challenges you needed to overcome. Stalking a suspicious character through a city felt completely different than the one-on-one duels of the arena, both different to getting through the hostile maze of an oblivion gate. Does Bethesda bloviate? Yes. Does oblivion stack up against modern games? Not really. That doesn't mean the whole game is an incompetent farce.

Yeah Bethesda makes terrible rpgs. I've tried three of what they've produced and no matter how hard I tried got very bored and gave up on all of them. Oblivion was the last one I bothered with. I think whoever thought level scaling was a good idea should have their balls removed. Yeah eventually you can outlevel the game but up until then what's the point of making my character stronger?
