THE WORLD'S WORST REVIEW of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time is one of the most legendary video games ever made, and as a result near-countless reviews and analyses have been made of it.
And yet I'm certain that I can craft THE WORLD'S WORST REVIEW of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.
The World's Worst Review is a review series in which I am attempting to review a game whilst also never once using the words "good", "bad", or any of either words' countless synonyms. Should I make such a catastrophic mistake, a lifetime of shame shall befall my family and my children shall be cursed.
"Worst", "worse", "better" and other terms are relative terms by the way! And do not mean "good" or "bad" on their own and are thus fair game. Words with good or bad connotations do not equal words that mean good or bad.

I think one underrated point you mention in this video is: "So I'm not trying to tell you that Ocarina of Time hasn't aged, I'm trying to tell you that a game from 1998 should have aged much worse than it has". It's the perfect middle point between those who still refer to it as a masterpiece and those who say it's old and clunky. Also, the wit is on point, as ever. "I thought it was Hyrule, not Brazil" and all the Irish jokes made me bust a gut.

That “a game from 1998 should’ve aged much worse than it has” feels disingenuous as my immediate thought was “so every 3D- no, games in general would be poorly designed enough for them to show their age?” While I get it it’s also a testament to how some view this time as a time of mediocre 3D games abound and some games like OoT and Mario 64 are the exception to the rule.

When you said the thing about "simply existing in this game sometimes", I felt that. I use to spend hours when I was a child just enjoying the mystical lost woods, the peaceful noises of crickets at night, climbing up on the draw bridge chains and watching the sun set. It was and still is an experience unmatched by any other in my mind and heart. I didn't grow tired of beating the game over and over again, and just dicking off in the overworld, attempting to find any crumbs of new secrets. That was before the internet destroyed my attention span, before it spoiled secrets in the games I played. I wish I could go back. I can still replay it, but it's not exactly the same now that I'm 30. My attention span is in tatters. The ADHD defiantly worsened thanks to the immediate gratification the internet gives us. Despite all of this, Ocarina of Time for sure has a number one place within me, and it's magic still has an affect. It was the first game I ever beaten.

I love the perspective you take in this series. It’s not about objectifying quality, to boil the experience down to a number or scale or whatever. It’s about the experience itself. Stepping back and reflecting on the human experience of it, how it made you feel, and whatever else the media brings to mind. It’s a breath of fresh air in an environment where it feels like we’re trying to objectify all these subjective pieces of media and try to have the “right” opinion. Thank you fudge man.

I remember being 5 years old, getting this game from my cousin for a birthday. Being transported to a wonderful, creative world, far darker but still somehow as beautiful as anything else I'd touched. Just spending time running around, climbing over little fences, discovering how everything worked. And I still remember that one thought I held in my heart, that probably changed my life and how I appreciated video games forever. "What's wrong with his knees? Why can't I jump?" And then I went back to Banjo because his funny skeleton face man was less spooky and his knees were okay. Really loved how you handled this one as a sort of deconstruction of the retrospective. I feel those same feelings that I get from hearing someone else's experience with a game and getting to live in both the game's world and the presenter's memory of it, but this is a lot snappier, a lot more direct, really clever with simple things like pacing and formatting that make it so engrossing. Thank you, really enjoyed this one!

Games are powerful nostalgia vehicles, practically nostalgia transports. They have visuals accompanied by a setting and music. More importantly, it's your own choices that affect what goes on around those scenes, your own choices affecting how long you're immersed in that setting and music. Even a music once found annoying or trifling or spooky can transport you back in time with a fondness unfounded by other mediums. Love the video man. I now believe Link is Irish too.

N64 is always going to be hard to consider how the games aged because it was such a middle ground for 3D gaming. It was necessary to get fully into 3D, but having only one thumbstick pretty severely limits your ability to maneuver a 3D world.

interestingly enough despite being old enough to have had an N64 as a kid, and growing up very much into zelda, i never actually played OoT until a couple years ago, after i had already experienced BOTW. so at that point OoT was a little underwhelming for me, especially since i didn't have any nostalgia for it to go on, but i still had fun and enjoyed seeing the 3D games' origin. i was struck by how much it still felt like "a normal zelda game" and wished i could have appreciated it in its time, trying to imagine what it would have been like for that to be the first 3D game i'd ever played... AND what it would have been like to have heard so many of the iconic zelda musical themes for the first time all in one game! from that perspective i could definitely understand why people would cite it as their best/favorite game of all time. for me though, it was mostly just a bit of interesting zelda series history homework lol. though i agree that it's held up impressively well for a literal 24 year old game!! super metroid feels the same way to me - just played that for the first time last year and it still felt so natural and intuitive and fun i LOVED majora's mask though (which i also only played for the first time recently) & i really hope the sequel to BOTW carries some of that MM energy... taking a great world and just playing around with it and refining it... adding some darker/creepier elements to it... like i want it to be WEIRD in the best way, just to see what they come up with

What an amazing video. You truly captured the nostalgic metatextual tactile feelings of this game beautifully. Even though we age, our games may not age with us, and yet they remain as polydextrous as they day we met them, with all they have being time capsules into our very souls. I think Kanye West put it best when he said: "The game is, as it always has been, the journeys of our crystalized mementos braxing along the sides of all the beaches in the world, and just as the bird flies, so too do our lives." - Bilbo Baggins Also, I like that how, despite being a joke review, it's still leagues better than Egoraptor's OoT video

Arin's review and then gameplay of OoT was downright embarrassing. He was acting like DSP throughout the whole ordeal. My favorite bit was when he said, "Ocarina of Time confused difficulty with waiting" when he referred to timing your attacks and using your shield. Yes, because the combat would be sooo much more interesting if you could just stab everything over and over again without thinking about it. And he didn't even acknowledge that you can use a variety of items to circumvent "waiting." I don't think he used deku nuts to stun an enemy even once.

@@BaconMaken Exactly. Like if Link to the Past is better somehow with its combat. Literally just swing the sword to win every fight. (Anti-Faeries get a pass though). Yes its simple, but enjoyable? Eh- More passable. (FYI Link to the Past is my first Zelda game. I can knock it down a few pegs and I understand its faults.) Zelda 2 did combat better in all honesty than LttP. But only because its just a touch more creative.

I think the expectation that something should have aged or expect something to age, is warranted, but also should as well be considered along with the probability of a game still being able to hold up despite the passing of time. While definitely should be expected with most games from previous decades, I believe it's also a bit misguided to assume all are to be as such. Oot is amongst the gems that still hold up today, even despite it's technical flaws. Some definitely could have been avoided or fixed, yet I do forgive it to a degree since this was Nintendo's first 3d Zelda, of course most would agree with this point. Over all, my point is that there really shouldn't be this over confidence in the idea that games of previous decades will Majority of the time, or as the comments in the video have suggested, assume that absolutely all after much time has past will be difficult to play, yet also needing someone to look past said flaws to be played. Yes, many games will and have ended up in such states, but there will always be exceptions that will prove to be able to hold up well despite how much time passes. I also am a bit biased, but nostalgia doesn't blind me to the issues with Oot, however, flaws aside, as we all know, Oot still holds up regardless of the naysayers. I find that majority of time the ones who object the most tend to be younger than the oldest of Gen Z (the oldest having been born mid to late 90s). There's a lot to be said about the youngest who play video games these days, but that's for another time.

OoT can be hard to review. Opinions can be and often are all over the place for numerous reasons. For me it was the first Zelda game, with the help of a prima guide, I was capable of beating. ALttP was too difficult until I was like eight or something. Maybe (probably) longer. I don't remember how much I used that guide as it was like 24 years ago and I was five when the game came out. But still. I do know I replayed OoT for years and years on our old N64. Many of those memories have faded into emotions more than anything at this point. Heck there's no simple way to describe how I feel when the credits roll when I replay it even today. That said I can also look at OoT and recognize it has aged. Far better than it should have for a game in its position, but it has aged. It's certainly not trash, however it's hard to say if 'masterpiece' is the best word for it either anymore. If only by today's standards. Though it isn't exactly fair to judge it that way either. I suppose much like SM64 that a game like Ocarina of Time might be better measured by their impact and importance now. Both are still great. Just not easy to call perfect anymore.
